The return of the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0:

https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/mice/microsoft-classic-intellimouse

Lovely, and I will get one when they become avaliable, MSRP is $39.99. It's essentially a Explorer 3, but with a white light instead of a red.

The second one is a bit more high end: the Surface Precision Mouse.

Specs are unknown, but whatevs. Love to try it.

It is hardly fair to condemn a brand for life because one mouse of one model had a manufacturing defect. Until Man can create perfection 100% of the time, even the best models from the best makers of any product will have units that are not perfect. That goes for power supplies, motherboards, RAM, drives, cars, TVs, monitors, or what have you.

It is not even likely the same OEM supplier of the old Intellimouse is the same as their current maker.

I don't know who makes Microsoft's current lines of keyboards and mice but I have had great service from them (for the last 5 or so years) and really like them for their feel, function, design, construction and reliability.

If these are anything like the MS Wireless Mouse 5000 I'm using on 3 systems here, I will be very happy.

Which one and what defect?
I forget. The left click was bad. Click once, it would sometimes not click at all and other times double click. Try to click and drag and it would do it when it wants to and only when it wants to. I got so pissed off at it I crushed the bastard on my desk and pitched it. Bought a Logitech MX518 and used that for almost a decade until it died.

The last Intellimouse I used, I destroyed because a manufacturing defect pissed me off.

Mine died due to a faulty cable, nearly new. I was unhappy and felt burned at the time. One of the 4 wires broke inside. I took it apart and cut off the bad section and did a splice. It now has a shorter cord and sits in a drawer for a spare or while working on other machines.

This new one does look nice and I would consider it.

Being a lefty, back in the early 2000's there weren't many choices for a good mouse. The black/silver intellimouse I used until I wore it out....not a bad mouse when you don't have many choices. I'll be watching this one closely, I need a mouse rather desperately...nothing worse than one foot missing on a mouse...mine is not only worn out, it wobbles!

Ford's choice of replacement in the MX-518 was top notch. I used to game with my younger cousin and he kept a spare in my desk just in case we we're gaming over here at my place. The thing about the MX-518 it didn't matter how long he beat on that thing, it stil He probably still has one new in the box sitting in his office. He stopped gaming shortly after COD 4....it's when the children came....;).

Nothing will be 100%, the only thing absolute is bills and death.

Back then the insides were typical Logitech so maybe they are to blame too.

Being a lefty
I am not a lefty but I use my mouse with my left hand. This was due to wearing out my right wrist (carpel tunnel) and fingers (arthritis) going back and forth between the normal keyboard, number pad and mouse.

It didn't take me very long at all to get used to the mouse on the left and my productivity actually increased because I could use the mouse with my left hand and the number pad with my right at the same time.

There were very few "contoured" mice for the left hand available (and still aren't), and I don't like contoured mice anyway. So a "universal" mouse works great for me - especially since I don't switch the button functions to the opposite sides. I hope MS includes some new universal mice in this new line of mice.

Curious - do you still use your left hand for mouse and right for keyboard? How long did it take you to get used?

Yes, 20 years later and I still use the mouse in my left hand.

It only took a couple days before it felt totally natural in my left hand - perhaps a couple days longer for precise pointer placement (like selecting individual pixels while editing an image). But now, it feels odd in my right hand. And no, I am not ambidextrous.

I'm with Bill....it didn't take all that long for me to switch to using the mouse right handed when I started having wrist problems. I now switch to my right hand whenever I start to feel the least bit of a "twinge" at the back of my left hand or wrist. It didn't take long to notice....this can be brought on if I'm not supporting my arm for long intervals. I grew up in a house that was strictly "elbows off the table" during dinner....well, I broke that habit to save my wrists. The only thing I can't do right-handed is play games. I've tried and it turns in to a ridiculous joke...I just can't react fast or accurate enough when attempting to play with my right hand....and I have given it a shot on many many occasions.

Bill's other observation about contoured mice is spot on as well. Never has been much available in that regard. I still remember when Razer's very first mouse came out and it was ambidextrous...it was an immediate buy....but it only took three days before I sent it packing. The back of my hand was so sore I could barely grab the mouse. This is where Microsoft's Intellimouse came in....it was a life saver for me. While not contoured...it was shaped perfectly for my hand. I used one of these solely for 8 years. Pretty sure I went through two of them in that time...they held up well. Maybe not FordGT tough, but good enough....:).

Two other mice that I have loved using are the Logitech LS1 Laser Mouse as well as the Logitech T400 Zone Mouse. Back when I was doing technical analysis on a regular basis....these mice we're 'pinpoint' accurate and stood up to very long sessions over many years. I'm still using my T400, but I'd prefer a new one. I've plumb wore this one out. As I mentioned in another thread....it's worn out and wobbles. It needs to be replaced with something...I might just hunt around and see what the market is currently offering, but for me....as soon as I saw that Intellimouse....I was thinking....mine.

Best Regards,

Liquid Cool

P.S. eidaraman1...Perhaps you didn't notice that Bill lives in Nebraska? Death, Bills, and TAXES would be a more accurate statement.....:).

How true! I note Nebraska is one of only 13 greedy states that tax social security. But at least I live in Sarpy County, not Douglas. So no stupid "Wheel Tax" for me! ;)

Oh, and I have one of these for each computer here. I am positive I would have had wrist surgery by now without them.
