As the title suggests, which one would be better for gaming?

i play at 1440p @ 144hz but anything close to 60 is acceptable, so a strict 144fps is not mandatory.

my system specs are as follows
  • i7 8700(non K)
  • Asus Prime Z370
  • 32 GB DDR4 3200 Mhz Cas 16 Ram (2 x 16 GB)
  • 240 GB SSD (Boot drive)
  • 1440p @ 144hz/165hz oc IPS G-Sync monitor.
  • 4 TB HDD.
  • Corsair HX750 PSU
i am from one of those countries where it costs a fortune to build a pc of this scope so i wont be upgrading anytime soon and will mostly skip 2 ~ 3 generations of GPU's before i think of another GPU upgrade.

As you can see, i already have an SSD as my boot drive. So should i go for a GTX 1080 + secondary SSD where i can store my programs and games or just use the money and buy a GTX 1080 ti ? am being torn between the decision

i like 1080 ti cause i wont be upgrading anytime soon give or take 5 years, so that 11GB Vram + its 20% performance boost compared to a GTX 1080 will help me last a bit longer than a GTX 1080.

but on the other hand i also like the idea of having things respond instantly, all my programs opening up in an instant, games with no loading time sounds intriguing.

I am an application developer, i game and work on my PC, work during day time and play a few hrs before bed and am a heavy weekend gamer. I also mod games as in make my own mods

i'll be playing heavily modded games like skyrim, fallout but i also play a lot of RPG's FPS, Simuation and RTS games.

sorry for wall of text. Its just i cant decide which is better, they both seems to be good options, oh between Selling off GPU and buying used ones is not an option in my country and this would be the final investment i'll be investing into my PC meaning i can no longer buy an SSD in future and be done with it, this stuff is just crazy expensive where i live so this will be final. So its either GTX 1080 + SSD or GTX 1080 Ti.

Edit- Updated system specs, included HDD and PSU.

Get the 1080ti.
You can always buy another SSD later on.

Edit: I see, you only have an 240GB SSD...
In that case try getting an 1080ti + HDD as @Devon68 mentioned.

I voted for the 1080ti.

I think as far as gaming goes, the extra performance of the ti, especially as the system ages, will be greater than the performance of having a second SSD. I use a SSD for my boot drive as well and I have space for one or two games even on a 256GB. If I am playing a game often, I just drag the install folder over for the time being. I do this with larger slow loading games like GTAV.

Is it Serbia?

No, but am afraid its much worse than that. :banghead:

This is exactly why i was favoring a bit towards 1080 ti, but i was not sure.

I said 1080 ti. Normal hdd is sufficient for games and you got a 240gb boot ssd already so might as well get a 1080 ti assuming your psu will handle it (you didn't mention your psu I don't think).

In all honesty i favor the GTX 1080 Ti over GTX 1080 + SSD, but i was just wondering if its worth shaving off few seconds from loading times from both applications and games by using an SSD. Like i have seen applications/programs starting up instantly with no loading time when installed on SSD, but once started its basically the same thing as HDD other than saving work progress before going to bed which is again instantaneous.

If you play a lot of bf4 it might be because a 1080 at 1440p is more than enough for it and those kind of games really, REALLY benefit from an ssd. My load times took 4 plus minutes and went down to 20-30seconds on an ssd vs 7200rpm

No, he should get an ssd now and upgrade the GPU later on. GTX 1080 can play 1440p fine, 1080Ti is up to 30% faster, which means more comfortable gameplay but seriosuly if I wanted a meaningful upgrade for my 1080 at 1440p 144Hz that would have to be the second card for SLI. When ampere comes out he'll regret buying a 1080Ti. They're really much more expensive than 1080s, $230 is a hell of a difference and he's gonna buy the ssd anyway. If 1080Ti's were at $600-650 now then maybe, but they start at $740 except for the crappy MSI armor or blower versions.

If PCs are expensive in his country and he wants to sit on this GPU for a few years then buying a 1080Ti that late at that price is a dumb advice. Summer 2018 will see the introduction of new nvidia cards.

SSD is not a must but they come really much more convenient. Low loading times,no unnesessary noise, and current games do tend to require a lot from the drives while loading levels and big, open environments. Slow and noisy on HDD, fast and silent on SSD.

Hi,
You should get 1080Ti and than get any modern 60GB SSD and use it as Hybrid drive for your 4TB HDD. (Intel only supports up to 60GB, so if you get 128Gb you'll have to partition it and will be left with another 60Gb for something else)
Its supported by Intel chipset and it actually works great, (google Intel Smart Response Technology) the SSD caches most used files from the HDD. This works great for games and programs that you use daily.
They feel just like SSD speed, because they loaded from the SSD.
Right now with International shipping, you can find many 128Gb SSDs on amazon for sub 100USD prices.

I am perfectly aware of the Nvidia Ampere, also the next summer is no where near and i'll have to wait at least 6 ~ 8 months until they will be available in the market, and am not sure they are going to release their highest xx80 ti version right away which means more wait time, while their xx80 might match current 1080 ti which seems more practical and if that's the case then am just waiting 6 ~ 8 months in the least to get the same performance as a GTX 1080 Ti which seems kinda moot. So i say its not too late to buy a GTX 1080 Ti and be happy with it, that is unless Nvidia releases their highest xx80 Ti card first.

Where i live the GTX 1080 TI starts from $1000 and creeps all the way up to $1500 while a GTX 1080 + SSD costs the same (around ~1200) so i wont be Sli-ing 2 GTX 1080's either. its just not possible where i live. The prices wont even come down ever cause of greedy re-sellers and a non existent used market.

SSDs will only get cheaper and faster after all.

Nice point.

Well i wont be playing any BF games. The only games i'll be playing will be SP games which are modifiable, Ofc i do play multiplayer games like warframe, Planetside2, Dreadnought, Blacklight Retribution, Mechwarrior living legends, Crysis Nano (With Friends), Renegade X (With friends) and a few more. I Really hate the loading times in fully modded games like Skyrim and fallout and that's a pretty drastic load time reduction in BF4 you got there.

Quick second question, do you guys think its worth it to entirely skip on both SSD and 1080 Ti upgrade options and go for i7 8700K +High end cooler and OC it to 5.0 ghz than sticking to i7 8700(non k) ?

what i am trying to say is

i7 8700k @ 5.0ghz + Gtx 1080.

or

i7 8700 + GTX 1080 + 512 GB SSD.

or

i7 8700 + GTX 1080 Ti.

Honestly I was in your boat a month or month and a half ago about a gtx 1080 vs 1080 ti in general. I ended up buying the 1080 ek block edition from msi for like 550ish instead of the 1080 ti version for like 800ish. I feel for me since i game at 1440p and for awhile 1600p until I sold that monitor that my gtx 1080 was fine. I get like 170plus fps on ultra in rainbow six siege and like 140 plus fps in bf4 ultra. For me it became, if a 1080 is fine, why spend more money? I think an ssd will better suit you. For me, it was also like, if I'm going to be upgrading in a year or two, both cards will have lost their resale value to the point I won't get that 250 extra for the ti version back out of my 1080 ti. I may only get say an extra 100. Yet with an ssd, you'll keep using it for a long time. Idk, I'm going to change my vote. Thinking an ssd with nice load times and just fine fps will suit you better, because after awhile you'll stop noticing having too many fps but you will notice having too many load times.

Edit: i would skip the 8700k. It's too unlikely you'll get a 5ghz oc imo and an 8700 is more than sufficient. Unless you want to delid...

I would like to say it really really depends on how fast that hdd is because the usually "slow" drives gives a laggy experience in Windows 10 and slow because it has soo many things in the background.

But if u want to do 1440p gaming with G-Sync I will get the GTX 1080 Ti, not that I know what I am talking about looking from my system specs came from a GTX 1070 and I had never regarded the upgrade I get soo much better framerates on High and Ultra settings.

GTX 1080 will run 1440p at 80-100 fps for the majority of new games. You decide if spending almost +50% more on 1080Ti is justified to get you fps boosted to 100-130. In 6 months time you might find your 1080Ti on par with new xx70 card at half price, with worse driver support which might prove important along the way. Look at 980Ti vs 1070 in the newest games like Wolfenstein or AC:Origins. The 1070 is stretching its legs a bit more now, this always happens with nvidia cards in the long run.

Same will happen to Pascal, its not even debatable. Question is how soon, but eventually it will.

Honestly i was going for the ryzen 5 1600 build with some sweet fast ram that was supported/tested on my board, until the price of the ram i wanted to buy just skyrocketed overnight and the next day when i checked it as i was about to buy, it made me say WTF. the ram price just jumped from $450 to $600 and that really pissed me off so i was like OKAY AM DONE WITH THIS RYZEN AND ITS REQUIREMENT FOR FAST RAM BULLSHIT AM GOING INTEL AND JUST BUY WHATEVER RAM I CAN FIND. and that is how i ended up in the intel platform. Ram prices are just too unreal and its getting harder and harder to find the right ram that the board supports, at least with intel i dot have to worry about the ram.

no i wont be delidding, and i understand that its a gamble to get 5.0ghz but the reviewers made it look soo easy that almost any i7 8700k can reach 5.0 easy with good cooling.

The GTX 1080 costs $700 where i live, might get one for around $650 if i look everywhere but that'll be the lowest i can get, and like i mentioned the used market is just non existent in my country so i'll be stuck with what i bought.

well mine is a WD blue 4TB 7200 RPM drive, its the main storage drive(got another 2 as redundant backup) i also have 2 more HDD's for data partition, like i keep my work stuff in one and my games in a another so its not a problem with HDD having too many stuff running. What i mean to say is i got separate drives for work, games and media.

Like, said the best perf/price offer from nvidia has been to buy the xx70 card when it launches for several generations now.

GTX 970 vs 780Ti/Titan Black
GTX 1070 vs 980Ti/Titan X

they always come with comparable performance to the latest flagship, with a huge reduction in price, huge reduction in power draw and improved efficiency and better driver support in the long run.

@DeadlyTitan 7200rpm and 64mb cache is alright but I would prefer a 128/250GB SSD for Windows 10 if u can squeeze a cheap 128GB ssd into ur budget with the GTX 1080 Ti it would be much more prepared than any hdd even I got a WD Gold 1TB 7200rpm and 128MB cache it would properly run Windows 10 without many problems but I would still go for a small SSD any day.

yes that'll be the sad truth, but there are factors to consider, newer hardware takes a while to get into the market where i can buy, so it'll be more than 6 months, also newer tech costs a shit ton more on its initial launch where i live considering Nvidia released the GTX 1080 in my country @ $1000 and GTX 1070 for $800, now they are available for $650ish and $500ish, and realistically i do not think the next gen xx70 can match a GTX 1080 ti, it'll be more like GTX xx80 matching 1080 Ti and xx70 matching GTX 1080. I personally believe ampere will just be pascal refresh like just like what happened with the GTX 6xx and GTX7xx series with new memory and few improvements cause realistically Nvidia have little to no reason to rush and got all the reasons to milk their customers with little to no competition from AMD
