So after been freaking mad this evening on windows update. First of all i am sick and tired of its auto update crap when i work on my pc, causes slow downs. So today i got into task manager and force fully shut down that updater process. So the slow stopped and pc ran fine.

For those of interest, here is what happens after shutdown. if you dont want to know, then just continiud lower down.

So after finnishing work i shut it down, but it began to update saying waiting for windows to be prepared alright, but nothing happened just sat that and no more happens (it dit not freeze, that marker still turning in a circle) for an hour or so. Got tired of waiting so forcefully shut down my pc. latter turned it on again and after boot the same came and no more happens. force that process to close clearly whas a bad idea. well i got in to windows repair with my boot DVD, but it cut not repair windows and system restore cut either be found. So I had to kill the install (format c) and Lesson learned not to force closing that process.

So to the topic. Is there a hitten way to permanently disable this auto update crap like i cut in wndows 7. I am sick and tired of not can desice my self when it shall update like when I shut it down and not doing it by it self while I am working on my pc?

Did you go into the Update options and set your active hours? You can set a 12 hour window where it won't do updates.

Too bad you didn't have a little more patience. It most likely is the Fall Creators update. It can take a couple hours. I am personally aware of 3 cases like yours where the user got impatient. If you look at Update History, most like you will see 1709 failed several times. I suggest you start it again and go to bed. In the morning, you will likely have to reboot, but soon would be good to go.

Disabling Windows Update is a bad idea unless you are very disciplined at manually keeping Windows updated on a timely bases.

Edit comment: Fixed typos.

Did you go into the Update options and set your active hours? You can set a 12 hour window where it won't do updates.

I think it's 18h now.

Sorry to high jack, disable the service? You mean windows updates? I can't, mine keeps trying to update. But cause I have the drive compressed, it can not update.

Fixed that for you...;)

In windows 7 and 8.1 you're in control and you can easily turn-off updates or set it to check but not download.

If I were to use Windows, I would just use 10 and block windows update but, I shouldn't have to do that to run a modern OS without having the risk that random updates that I didn't say to install end up bricking my machine.

That don't stop updates, the important ones will still be installed.
Only some rare critical updates will be downloaded and installed without the user's consent. The updates that do get through are updates that shouldn't be delayed anyway (like the WannaCry patch). I truly think it's the best solution since it stops most updates but still keeps the PC updated against the worst. That way if you forget to manually check your updates for a certain period of time, your at least not vulnerable to the major exploits.
