A lot of people pop in for a few minutes, then pop out, and almost everyone at some point or another browses or participates by phone. So you would really not be getting as much CPU power as you might think.

Good point. I wouldn't want it mining on any of my mobile devices, including laptops. There would have to be an option for that, too.

The way you do the ads here doesn't bother me in the slightest W1zzard so I don't use an adblocker here. It's certainly way, way better than some sites like Toms Hardware and PC Gamer which are a f'ing mess with the ads. If you are not making enough from ads to keep the site running then I guess you have to do something. This site is my favorite site for GPU reviews and the forum members are mostly mature and some have a lot of tech info to share so the site is certainly worth keeping up imo.

The ads on TPU are discrete and in no way annoying. If you want to use my CPU to mine though, I want the income.

Using other peoples hardware to create wealth (even if small amounts for site upkeep) is a stinking shit of an idea, no matter how trivial the consumption may be. Keep the ads. Hell, I've even clicked a few of them because they have been targeted well.

yeah I am mining on my CPU/GPU while im browsing the forums, so if it was enabled it would just grind everything to a halt. I doubt even one good share would be generated.

My opinion:
Nobody on mobile device will even consider that because of battery life.
On PC... still not many, because of interference with performance demanding software.

+1 for ad-free "donator" TPU account.

Hmmmm, I did miss that as well. It doesn't change my response much, because the income for TPU would be really inconsistent.

I "may" opt-in if the functionality of the mining script was properly and transparently described.
At least for me, the main issue is that many of these browser-based mining scripts continue using resources long before the visitor has left the website, and the script can only be stopped by clearing browser cache.
If TPU implemented a script that ONLY activates when visiting the forum, then it would be a lot less intrusive.

Even if there was a score system, for bragging rights, a "Miner/Contrbution" tracker, or other silly ideas to entice.
Ads cost a fraction of processing power compared to mining. It is opt-out by default here but you know better and don't place ads that make browsing sluggish or annoying. And those generate a revenue agreed on contract, unlike mining where the currency is volatile and highly dependent on your visitor's processing power. You would need a broker.

Id rather use something like that, be it adblock or ublock origin, than to have my cycles taken over erroneously. Or, as I said, I would rather donate, perhaps a premium membership, to remove ads... something like that is much more attractive from all angles to me.

Our premium members have that, their own section which the general public cannot see, as well as access to a chat box for both on and off topic bantor.

My $0.02, I don't mind the ads you're using now on the rest of the site. They are not intrusive and don't eat up bandwidth. I've been wondering why you haven't used them in here yet. Seems logical. So as long as the same methodology is used, I say have at it!

However, the mining thing is not ok. I actively block mining scripts for all websites so even if you employ such, it'll be blocked. Such shenanigans are an inherent security risk that should not be tolerated.

Tricky one. I open twelve browser tabs to read the tech news of the day. I don't mind advertisements as such, but the reason I use an ad-blocker is that all the ads have a serious impact on browser scrolling. I'd be OK with bitcoin mining if it does not impact browser performance and there is a graphic that shows when bitcoin mining is in progress.

I too have clicked a few of them and twice it's lead to a purchase on my part. So the ads are seemingly working. That's the better direction to go, IMHO.

I voted no, because i'm the kind of person to leave 50 tabs open on different parts of the forum, and i dont have threadripper yet lol.

Why not setup a TPU mining team, like we do with WCG and similar? Surely some people would mine for the forums, even if it was split between the miners and TPU

I'd rather see a banner ad put at the top of the forums like what is on the main page, and even an ad or two on the side in the blank space. I think even on a 1080p screen, there is enough space on the sides to stick a narrow ad banner.

But at the same time, I guess it would be nice to be offered the choice to members. Either display a few ads, or disable ads by opting to CPU mine while browsing.

You need ads everywhere? When you need something, for example: you can't turn off any device, even if you go to sleep, and all of them playing ads nonstop, because devs so poor. Forums was ok for TPU without ads or mining, and now seeing how others MAKING MONEY on people... nothing personal, just greed

There is an infinite difference between making money and covering your costs and I don't assume it is anything more than cost covering, just because the site has not previously advertised (en mass) does not necessarily mean there is any money in the account.
