whats the best way to use a laptop to ensure the battery lasts as long as possible?

When you go to battery power, your display should dim a bit. That'll help some. Do things as you need them and not at the same time. Don't have stuff running for no reason. Turn off wireless adapter when you don't want the Internet. Probably all kinds of things.

goto control panel, then power options, and set it to max battery.

ok let me be more thoro ... as in life as in the amount of years you have the battery ...

just charge it to the max, run on battery till warning lights, and plug it back in. The idea is to use its entire charge, from 100% to critical, and back up. This removes that dreaded memory issues.

Depends. I actually just optimized my wife's laptop's battery. There was a utility that came with her HP laptop to do so. Pretty cool I guess.
