I highly doubt Nvidia's ability to block mining at HW level. Software level maybe yes. If it is true then definitely good news for gamers.

Meanwhile I am sure Nvidia is not gonna give up this piece of cake, see this thread here regarding specialized mining card.

https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/p102-100-mining-cards.241473/#post-3798079

It makes more sense to divide up the two segments.

My thought? Nvidia doesn't care who gives them money. Unless it is financially viable to have mining only cards and gimp mining on gaming cards, they won't do it.

Separating the two though I do feel is the only real solution for gamers and miners.

TweakTown is speculating on the possibility and others are picking it up as a possibility. Then it gets posted as a rumor ?

But after 24 hours of thinking about this, I have a sneaking suspicion that NVIDIA will be gimping the GTX 20 series cards at a hardware level

Expreview said:
Now there is news that NVIDIA next-generation GTX 20 series graphics cards may be mined from the hardware level of GPU mining

What news? It was a thought someone had.

The internet.

I've been a proponent of dividing market segments for some time. Curious to see how they acomplish it, as any video game with scripted compute accessible is liable to suddenly have "mining mods" if they go the whitelist route.

It will need to be something else. I too hope the compute is not simply gimped to the detriment of all, though.

Pretty much 3 terms for the same thing frankly. Unsubstantiated.

Oh trust me, they care. Cryptomining nonsense is too unpredictable and while it sells now, it doesn't mean it'll be a guaranteed revenue. Gaming on the other hand has been a reliable stream of revenue for decades. And nothing is stopping it.

Separating gaming and mining gear is only logical path of doing business at this point.

One thing I noticed that Nvidia needs to change is they have 2 limit supply on their official store checkout page, they need to change that to 1 card per address, make it a little more difficult for the miner buyers at least. And first release of 2070 and 2080 need to all be FE editions only sold directly through Nvidia store imo with this 1 limit house policy rate, let the gamers have a chance for crying out loud. I think this would help a lot, then after 3 weeks, open the floodgates to all buyers and all companies who want to make their own variants of said GPU. Me personally I prefer the FE edition of my 1080 ti, on high fan curve (I wear headphones so that doesn't bother me) I rarely go below 2000 core when boosting. :D

SLI doesn't work and Nvidia has been openly brazen in how they are not putting it as a priority for drivers and game support. Y'all need to move on with your life, make it Limit 1 come on nvidia.. at least limit 1 for a 3 weeks period on a new GPU launch... for crying out loud.

If true alot of tears will be shared then. Miners will cry cause of no new cards to torture and gamers cause then we can finally get those cards we want and to normal prices again.

If not true then it will be all the same again as it is now unless this mining crap colaps for some reason.

I do bet Nvidia accelerates the rollout of the 2080 series. It would give them the opportunity to bump the MSRP. As much as I'm sure they like selling out of stock as fast as they can make them, it's the third-party retailers and flippers that have been making the real profit with the price gouging. For example, a $699 MSRP 1080ti sells for $1000 on Amazon. The flipper or retailer just made $301, not really NV. But bring the 2080 out and if it was a planned $699 MSRP that sells for $1000, NV can jack the MSRP (pre-launch) to say $850 or $900 as a starting point and a much larger chunk of that crypto gold-rush profit goes to them. Of course they could just arbitrarily jack the MSRP on current cards, but that never goes over well with customers so a new series release would be the time to do it.

That said, I'm super-leery of crypto-handicapped cards. Mining is essentially just processing, and if I spend $700+ on a video card I don't want artificial slowdowns from throttling in-game because the card misinterprets my 100% gpu usage as me mining. Same for stress testing or benchmarking, which I could easily see the hw viewing as trying to mine. I think it could probably be done at the hw level, but Nvidia will need to be awfully careful with the implementation. It would be fairly easy to distinguish between gaming and mining at the hw level. But it's going to be very difficult imo to stop mining at the hw level and not impair benchmarking or stress testing. Even then, I think mining software will adapt to get around any checks. If they code at the hw level to throttle or stop if gpu usage is 100% for over 5 minutes that would do it in theory since even the latest games won't keep the gpu at 100% for that long. But again, that makes stress testing or benchmarking really difficult. And it would be easy enough to code a mining program to stop for a short time every few minutes to drop gpu usage and stay under the radar. Maybe Nvidia will find another more creative way do it though.

Not going to happen, a tech journo's thoughts on the matter do not a rumour make.

One guy's wishes on tweaktown revealed said journo to be an idiot, no way can it be determined whether a card is mining or gaming imho and the many thinking it can are wrong , again imho.

The chances of being wrong when you claim something is impossible are extremely high. I know nothing of programming but lets take a simple factor into account : no video outputs are used on mining cards.

This. Mining created its own segment. Time for manufacturers to specifically target that segment with a stand alone product line now.

Some Brands/Manafactures did/have released mining only Cards ( ie with no Display Output)
Don't think they were seriously taken to by Miners as there was no real price=return Value over the standard Retail Card.
Those Industrial scaled miners (as alleged in China ect) do these days consider the roi on Card Expenditure
There will be little or no End of mining life return on the investment cost ( as they are currently priced)
while Cards with a display Output can be offloaded at the end of their mining life

Yes, because a lot of the supply issue is large miners have lots of addresses they use to get around the limitation limit set by companies, allowing 1 instead of 2 as the limit on the most high end of gpu's for a 3 week period would help gamers a lot imo, especially if it was Nvidia store only for those first 3 weeks.

Honestly, enforce the policy first, don't lower the limit, because those abusing it will get around it whether it's one or two.

It's only double precision castrated. Which very little uses.

they do enforce it to a single address, the problem is the miners use many many peoples address or affiliates to get around that rule.

They could tie the address(es) & CC details to determine if someone's stocking up on GPU's, I've Amazon India do it for instance.

Well looks like a lot of people think the manufactures care about who is buying their cards; I highly doubt the manufactures care at all and I don't I think AMD or Nvidia care at all either. A sale of a Graphic card is a sale of a Graphic card and the more sales the better as far as they are concerned, gamer or miner they could care a less as long as someone is buying them.
Even retailers hardly care unless it is cutting into them not selling other parts.
