On Ars Technica, if posts recieve a certain amount of downvotes they get hidden (a la our Low Quality Post feature). Equally, posts with a certain number of upvotes have a small visual cue that indicates they're of high interest for anyone coming to the thread from Google for answers.

We'd need to look at post interaction to decide what numbers those need to be.

I want to discuss tech and help as well as learn. I'm afraid it would be another thread i would not want to read. Someone will get mad when they don't get the credit they think they deserve or when they find out the majority of people don't like there idea. Make warnings public in there profile when someone breaks a rule. Scarlett letter

It's a slippery slope for sure. I would very much like to keep browsing TPU not Wccftech.

It's a slippery slope for sure. I would very much like to keep browsing TPU not Wccftech.

I know me and Vya had a disagreement in another forum, if this had been a feature, I am sure we would have downvoted eachother, further increasing our animostity towards eachother in that moment.

As of now, I consider Vya a TPU friend, and intend to post in a more professional manner moving forward. I feel like a downvote could make our community more toxic in an accidental sort of way. Cheers Vya, I look forward either way to being more open minded, and my apologies from before.

How would you get around the issue of only a few dominant posters? I read Ars everyday, love the website, and I love the comments section, but there are always like 3-5 top voted comments and that is all I ever read (as I assume many others do as well), I feel like that would ruin the traditional forum format that TPU is and encourage groupthink. Also, TPU's forums are insanely well optimized compared to any other forum I have ever used, the quote reply system, the edits not counting as double posts by accident... its very high quality here.

Side thoughts: I like the idea of a downvote, but I am also just weary... maybe 1 per day... even then, I have made some posts in my past, even recently that I am not proud of and wrote in the heat of the moment and deleted rather quickly. To have seen several downvotes on that post from people I like on this forum would have hurt my feelings some... regardless, this is a personal issue and does not apply to everyone. I will be more vigilant in the future regardless.

What are your thoughts on this?
My thoughts are "General Nonsense." Remember DeDasDude getting his "Thanks" button taken away? I remember getting hammered by "No Thanks" repeatedly by BumbleBee. It eventually became an expectation that conveyed no greater meaning--in both cases (DeDasDude got lots of "No Thanks" because he literally had no Thanks button).

Adding that feature politicizes every post. I think leave the power of censorship to the moderators.

I think TPU does almost everything better than OCN and other PC forums, but one thing I like about OCN better is there are far more moderators and they are much more strict, politics is not allowed, that is not what tech forums are about. I kind of like that about OCN as it cuts out of lot of where the toxic fights stem from.

I think instead of a downvoting system, perhaps revise forum rules to be more strict, and increase number of moderators. Also, growing our user base needs to be figured out... its such a small community, it really needs to grow, we already agreed we don't know how to do that though, so all is well.

The problem is there is nothing that suggest this will improve the quality of posts , if anything looking at other forums/sites the ones that have these features are among the most toxic ones.

Could you list a bunch? Always love to check out the competition, but haven't had much time to browse around

I also like the badges that tweakers gives out, which adds some level of gamification that could help drive up activity and quality

I think what TPU could benefit the most from is a solution marking system. It might reduce the amount of necromancies too.

I'm sort of middling on this, with a lean towards not doing it, as I think it would get abused by malicious downvotes. I'm open to good arguments either way, though.

One solution might be to hide the downvote count, and once passed a certain threshold the post would be hidden.

Wouldn't the "score" of the post be the sum of upvotes and downvotes?

Good question though, should we display individual votes? with usernames?

The worst example I know is from a foreign forum which employed this downvote system for a while but at one point they gave it a twist. The downvotes and upvotes got tied to a reputation system , the end result ? A bunch of old time users with a lot of reputation upvoting each other and downvoting everyone else. What's even worse is if you have a certain amount of negative reputation your account gets disabled.

This is the kind of slippery slope I was talking about , how one thing can lead to another. I know it probably wont come down to something like that , but who knows what will happen if you'll keep asking us about such features. TPU is doing alright , I think these changes stir up what are otherwise relatively calm waters.

Posts by "abrasive personality's " are more than lightly be down voted = a more Toxic Response

Down Voting has previously been discussed many times and past general consensus has been that it introduces more problems than is worth it.

I think we should avoid downvoting, its negative.

Badges are positive, so @W1zzard stay positive, badges, goals for being a positive community member is a great idea... I'd stay away from anything negative, it spreads like a virus, as I mentioned earlier, a downvote could have made certain situations even more toxic/hurt feelings. Positivism also spreads like a virus, lets discuss this badge idea folks, and stay a positive community ^^

Ho, I thought that it was going to co-exist with the current like system (aka dislike), instead it's going to be like Ars Technica ?
The real issue with a downvote is knowing that member X downvoted you, wich can aliment a feud. If it's hidden and anonymous, all you know is that your post was largely unpopular on the thread, and in that case the chance are that said post was really worth hiding.

Possibly averted by limiting the number of downvotes that can be used per day/week, etc? Just a thought...

I also thing Ford’s idea to mark a solution (for those threads that are problem-related) is a good idea. People who google an answer, come to TPU with the link, and go straight to the answer, without 50 ideas that didn’t work and 4 pages of arguing.

It's going to be abused in no time.
AMD aficionados will automatically downvote anything pro-Nvidia. Nvidia aficionados will automatically downvote anything good about AMD. And so on and so forth.
That said, if it doesn't eat too much into your resources/time, sure, give it a trial run and see how it goes.

Edit: For bonus points, neutral posters get downvoted by all sides :D Fwiw, Artstechnica has an upvote+downvote system that seems to be working. I get downvoted a lot over there (probably because of my habit of playing devil's advocate - either people don't like point of views other than theirs or I just suck) with the result that I keep my posting to a minimum. I still keep reading the site because some sections are actually interesting.
