Well a few weeks ago i went about being pissed at the updates and @W1zzard suggested just disabling it, well apparently this is not enough as i keep finding it reactivated as a manual trigger.

This machine is rarely restarted and thought it might be just because i never restarted but after trying that it's back lol.

So after a few other things i could do, maybe find out whats re activating it ?, before i go on a rampage on the services.

In fact it might be going Linux too as i only use to to visit a few sites and run the odd dedi server.

Well you have answered your own question, thread closed. if you're going to Linux it's a moot point.

Back to the question at hand though but surely you could block whatever service or port the update is using with a firewall? (not Windows)

Try setting your connection to metered and it shouldnt automatically download updates

To change this option for a wired Ethernet network, open the Settings app, head to Network & Internet > Ethernet, and click the name of your Ethernet connection. Enable the “Set as metered connection” option on the properties page.

hmmm, wilkl get back to this. I wonder If I can migrate how the server OSs do it since its all registry based. Will edit this later.

EDIT:: I reversed the settings for the servers and wrote up a quick batch to get the job done. Works great in a VM, I just have to test it on a "Home" VM now since I only had a PRO VM to work with.

EDIT2:: Damn it only works for Pro and im assuming up. Looks like home doesnt respect the check in the registry. sorry homie.

oops missed a word out :p, what i was trying to say if i cannot solve it then it be going to Linux, then again it could always go back to Win7 i do believe so.

7 has been perfect after I made my list of updates, referenced askwoody.com too.

Home editions at least then didn't have gpedit.msc, idk if that's true for win10 though, otherwise a registry hack would be needed, an altetnative to Win10 Home/Pro/Enterprise is Win10 LTSB.

I would just do Linux even if you do fix the problem honestly mate, I mean if you don't do that much, might as well. I only use Windows because I am gamer, and I use 8.1 cause I have no need for Directx 12, and my scores speak for themself. https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/26140553?

it's a bunch of scheduled tasks, check my windows 10 tweaks for vga review thread (google). the scripts in there have a section that deal with those

I gained 5-10% performance in every benchmark, Cinebench single and multi, FFXV bench, firestrike, cpu-z, etc by going back to win 8.1. win 10 is a bloated piece of crap imo. my system 5.2ghz, etc nothing changed but the OS. literally 5-10% performance boost across the board. thats just sad. M$ lul

I would try to find the reason as to why, as the performance loss usually does not happen, especially when you have the newest tech. Benchmarks have shown basically zero difference (I think even TPU had one), so it is most likely something you have running.
Also, you are using 8th gen on an unsupported OS (no updates with 7+ gen cpus). Not something to be that proud of.
P.S.
M$? Which year it is?

lol... wsus offline and .net framework 3.5 offline installer through CMD and flash drive... and settings never install updates, my OS doesn't even know I am not supported... well time to stop posting on TPU, I can see my skills have surpassed this website finally, take care.

.NET 3.5 is togglable Windows Feature, has always been since 8.1 came out, no need for offline installer for that.
About one year ago Microsoft pushed update to Windows Update Agent to show this:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ported-together-with-the-windows-version-that

Are you honestly telling me that you use hacky workarounds (zeffy's patch?) to deal with that AND duly update your PC every month with offline patches?

Once more, benchmarks showed basically the same performance. The problem most likely is with your system.
Let's even ignore the fact that there are no drivers for older OSes from Intel on new CPU's, thus potentially stuff can break (and did, in case with W7, when people got BSOD's with Kabylake and W7).
P.S.
Where is the outrage about Linux? Latest CPU's are supported by latest kernels only. You can install older versions, but unless some backports were done, stuff might not work correctly, chiefly the chipset/USB/graphics drivers. This is not Windows-only thing.
There is good enough technical explanation as to why Microsoft dropped the support for W7/8.1 on 7th Gen+/Ryzen.

nope wsus offline has no need for zeffys patch,.

you are wrong, if you turn on .net framework 3.5 it requires win 8.1 updates be turned on for it to work, so you have to do a backwards method to install it if you want to avoid using zeffy patch.

yawn, I am done with this thread, later kiddos

I suggest getting off your high horse and not trying to do things which are not technically supported, like running OS on unsupported hardware.
And fix your stuff, that performance drop is highly likely to not be "M$" fault.
P.S.
I am almost certain you do not do monthly updates.

I might go back to Win 10 eventually.

Also, WSUS offline is updated monthly if you want to indeed do the latest updates without Zeffy patch, requires clean install, but if all you do is game, it usually is only a 20 minute process, meh.

I think we can both agree to disagree at this point and move on.
