New cards speed compared to Gigabyte HD5870 1GB (2011)

Hello
How much more speed today's cards have compared to my Gigabyte ATI HD5870 1GB (2011) ?
It costed 550euros in 2011 and was one of those "top models" so it is not easy to change it...Especially when mining-people are raising the prices today.

- Are today's cards like 2x or 4x faster ?
- Has ATI still the best price/performance ratio ?

A modern gtx1080 would be up to 5x faster , But more importantly that one gigabytes of video ram would be a problem in modern games.

If it works fine for the games you play and the applications you run, then there's no need to upgrade it, but if you feel like you're experiencing issues, I can tell you from personal experience that video cards got to go.

I used to run a 6950 1GB, it worked well ,but around the time battlefield three was released, I started to notice I was maxing out the video ram.
You can easily find out if you're maxing out the video card by running a program in the background like MSI afterburner. You can send it to monitor GPU usage as well as video ram usage. If you see hundred percent sustained usage ,you'll know you need more power

what country are you in?

You could choose an AMD option as well, the RX580, or 570 are several times faster than that 5870. out of the ones you posted, even the 1050 (i recommend the "ti" model) would be far beyond the 5870.

prices are a bit higher now (in the US) , but the effects of mining have reduced significantly, i hope they have for You in Your country as well. i agree it sucks, but if you bought that 5870 for 550E 7 years ago, spending another 550E now, will certainly give you another great performing GPU for another 7 years

GTX includes the Ti's and if going Nivia you want GTX normally unless professional AutoCad user and normally GTX is fine for them too.

Yea, it would be best to have all specs. Many modern video cards do work with older PCIe1 and up motherboards, but some newer gpu's dont play nice with older boards, i had a gtx970 that hated my asrock extreme3 z68

PCI-express was designed to be scalable for various bandwidth and also upgradeability.
So it's very unlikely to go anywhere even in next 10 years.
I mean there's now PCI-e v4.0 coming into use doubling bandwidth from 3.0 which is till enough:

And PCI-e v5.0 is likely going to get finalized specification next year for another doubling of bandwidth.

Actually lots of people still bought Fermi just because it was Nvidia and completely disregarded its bad efficiency.
And then those same people complain how AMD couldn't keep developing competitive GPUs when they shoveled their money to Nvidia for doing bad work, instead of rewarding AMD and contributing to availability of R&D money!

In Graphics scores, for Fire Strike it's more like 7.46x : LINK
For 3DMark 11 (P-Score), 6.57x : LINK
and 3DMark Vantage (P-Score) is ~3.16x : LINK
^Last two are probably CPU limited a bit on GTX 1080

I'd have to say an RX580/1060-6G. 1080P/1440P gaming is acceptable.. I know Vega56 is falling to MSRP now finally though. Its now in the sub $500 range.

Get an used card. You may know that here in Finland it's pretty easy to get a good deal with used cards, and often they have still warranty (unless the cooler has been removed etc.)

I had HD 5870 Crossfire about 4 years ago, it had some raw horsepower when CF worked, but that 1GB VRAM was the worst bottleneck. In some cases, my previous GTX 470 was faster because it had more VRAM (1.25GB).

I still play even new games fine with an overclocked GTX 980, though everything maxed out in new games are too much. Med/high settings with some antialiasing gives a nice framerate and graphics are ok.

I upgraded from an HD 5870 to an R9 290X which the manufacturer replaced with an R9 390 (very similar in performance to RX 580). I don't regret that purchase at all. Upgrading is more than just game performance too. Newer cards support ReLive (screen record/transcode with negligible performance hit), Direct3D 12, Vulkan, have a crapload of VRAM by comparison, and hardware decoding of video (takes load off of CPU).

Exactly. GTX 970 or 980 is still a great card, if the price is right. My old 970SLI cost 270 eur about an year ago, and this 980 was free.
