Hello guys , i am Planning to buy 2*120mm Fans at 1500 RPM ,certainly i have a 80mm fan at maybe 2600 RPM , so my question is : will bigger fans at lower RPM be more quite , and are they going to produce the same airflow as a 80mm fan at 2600 RPM or even more ??
note : (i will remove the 80mm fan and install the new fan at the back of the case and the other one in the front).

Yes. Those bigger fans should move more air at lower RPMs with less noise. Larger fans have added benefit of being lower sound frequency too.

Many of us will remember the old days with 60mm CPU fans screaming like a hairdrier. :twitch:

Generally, yes, this is true. Keep in mind, compare specs, because even with larger fans, there are wide variances of airflow and loudness. Find the best balance.

fwiw, i find 140mm of good quality serve the purpose Very well in a standard mid tower case. I use a 360mm Radiator behind my front bezel, with 2-3 140mm fans intaking, and the noise levels are barely audible.

When it comes to chassis fans, you're kind of limited to what your case provides you for areas to mount them unless you're planning on modding it. Different fans have different acoustic and air flow properties. If it's a fan behind a radiator or a filter, static pressure becomes a thing too. Depending on what your goals are, different fans can be ideal. On one hand, you could buy a Corsair SP series fan with a focus on moving air but keeping it quiet, or you could buy a Delta or SUNON fan designed for servers where you don't really care if it howls, just so long as it moves as much air as possible.

Personally, I've been liking Corsair's ML series fans. They seem to have a nice balance when it comes to sound, air moment, and static pressure. I also really like having the 4-pin interface but, that's me.

For basic case fans. I highly recommend noctua 120/140mm fans. They are absolutely crap on a radiator but as a general case fan. they move a hell of a lot of air while remaining fairly quiet.

Redux fans come in Grey instead of the usual custod colour. they are pretty cheap too!!

Bigger is better.
Larger fans will turn at lower speed to deliver same or more air than a smaller fan at a higher speed, as a result they are quieter. 120mm is pretty standard now, and 140mm is good if your case has the capability to add them.

Was actually debating between 120mm and 140mm so this is very relevant. Moving all the noise to lower frequencies produces vibrations that require greater isolation for sensitive components like spinning drives. Higher pitch noise is more annoying to listen to but loses energy faster. I think the answer is not so much fan size as tuning. Resonant frequencies at certain speeds are unavoidable but usually manageable.

We haven't used a 120mm fan in about 5 years .... other than on the back of a HD cage for SLI builds to push air between the cards. Things to remember about fans are these:

1. To my eyes, high speed fans have no place with properly designed cases (exceptions being smal ITX builds) and heat sinks / radiators. There are few high fpi radiators left in production outside CLCs and almost any mid tower over $90 has enough room for at least five 140mm fans. High speed fans, outside very small usage niches, are the PC equivalent of VCR Players.

2. Don't even bother reading manufacturers spec pages,,, to get an idea of what real performance is... take the advertised CFM and SP ratings and cut the in half. As expected, the ones making the boldest claims do the most exaggerating.

3. Nothing stays the same .... so those of us who were reading about "the king's on the industry" 25, 15, and even 5 years ago, locking in our minds that's all we'd settle for (Noctua, Gentle Typhoons, etc)... the king is dead long live the king. They are still great fans but they no longer what everyone seeks to aspire to. Tho I have high hopes that Nocs newest design with rigid fan blades and low blade / frame cleartnce will shock the industry.

4. With Martin having retired, there's little to go on these days.... and reviews are scarce due to the amount of work involved. Best I can offer are these:

a) This shows what happens when ya take Noctua Fans off a Noctua Cooler and put Phanteks fans on them ... CPU temps drop by 6C at same rpm.
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/phenteks_f140/3.htm

b) SilentPCreviews fan rankings by performance / noise ratio. Any of the top 5 should serve you well... and unfortunately, the Silent Wings 3 came out after the review so I hope they do a new on soon. I'm sure it will beat or come very close to No. 1
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1345-page7.html

As I said above many of today's reviews are patterned on reviews from the ole days... For example, i don't see the relevance of testing a fan on a 30 fpi radiator as they are a rarity these days. Hopefully silentpcreview will revisit soon/

:rockout: haha
big fans work, lower RPM with same or better flow & decreased noise, I have only two 200mm fans both as exhaust doing all the case cooling ;)

You don't even need that fan on the top of your CPU cooler, it probably would run cooler without it. It is probably fighting with the 200mm.

you do relize those are blowing air the same direction?

and no, it may not be needed - but as someone who used dual fans on a tower, it certainly helped pushing my i7 to 4.8 - 5.1Ghz.

all blowing same direction ( UP ) , will keep all 3 on that AIR cooler because cpu gets hot ,,,140mm btw
If I was looking for a case, 80mm fans would actually be a big turn off unless its a small case, but there are small cases with 120mm fans
in previous setup had4 120mm intake --- 2 120mm & 1 200mm as exhaust all running on low

Doesn't matter if they are blowing the same direction it just creates excessive turbulence. He has three fans on the cooler. I tried a similar setup and my third fan didn't make the CPU any cooler it just create more turbulence with the exhaust fan. You don't want to put fans close together unless one of the fans is counter-rotating.
I don't care what he does, not interested in arguing this.

not an argument - inquiring about the science behind the claim.

there has been nothing in my experience or that of others HERE to substantiate that. sure, the air flow/tunnel coming out of a fan will expand and a shroud will prevent that, but nothing about two fans pointing in the same direction causing an "issue" as you describe.

so yeah, a citation would be great.

He is suggesting the blades will naturally be out of time and drift independently if PWM influenced. Go stick two house fans back to back and try different speeds if you want proof it lacks thoughtful implementation.

The world won't implode and it might not make a huge amount of real world difference to cooling or noise. Instead of dwelling on negatives the idea being expressed is attempting to better the other system though.

unless one of the fans is counter-rotating.
difference in fan speeds aren't the topic but fan rotation. and i am aware of what you refer to so, no demonstration need. ;)

As I said above many of today's reviews are patterned on reviews from the ole days... For example, i don't see the relevance of testing a fan on a 30 fpi radiator as they are a rarity these days. Hopefully silentpcreview will revisit soon/

All this plus what you see on the package is the brand not the manufacturer. There are only a handful of manufacturers out there so a lot of times people arguing over who has a better fan are simply arguing over the exact same fan even if the marketing on the box states different specs (specs are mostly made up by the brand).

fwiw, i find 140mm of good quality serve the purpose Very well in a standard mid tower case. I use a 360mm Radiator behind my front bezel, with 2-3 140mm fans intaking, and the noise levels are barely audible.
the biggest fan i can install in my case is 120mm.

120mm fans are good & very popular, a lot of styles to choose from, prices, designs, specs etc

Not trying hard enough then. Your case does have side panels.

Yes I have been reading the ghetto mods thread.

good point, did a lot of sidepanel fan holes myself until finally getting a case with enough fan mounts, nevertheless for a dual core desktop 2*120mm fans should push enough air with minimal noise
