Hi all, I appreciate the feedback you've given me on this. As i'm looking to try and get the most out of my system it may seem like the i7 might be the way to go although I've done some research on hyperthreading which on more earlier games it doesn't really do that much, but apparently the later games (and general pc tasks in general) start using it more often (Just like with the additional cores, most games only used 1-2 apparently, but are now starting to use more, if that's true?)
If I can get a reasonably priced i7 then I will, otherwise I may just go for the higher i5. But this will more than likely come after the main gpu upgrade which is deemed more substantial. As for used Cpu's are they realiable? I've bought a few used gpu's in my time and have never had an issue but never a processor.
Cheers!

HT helps a lot with newer games. I had a 7600K which I upgraded to 7700K, and it helped a lot. Especially when streaming. Tho switched to X99 platform after that.

I have no reason to not get an used CPU, since breaking of a CPU under normal situations is extremely rare. Screwing it up physically or killing with overvolting are the only common ways to break a CPU.

In Far Cry 4, 2GB VRAM was the bottleneck, not the GTX 680 itself which I had then.
FC4 is a taxing game that needed a beefy card and lots of ram. That assumes that all of the settings are cranked to the max. Most games don't need such. Frame rates are more important than most "quality enhancement" settings. So even FC4 runs fine when you set AA and AF to 4X.

I've been looking around and on average the 3770 (used) goes for around $130 - $170 whilst a 3570k (used) goes for around $70 - $90.

Had a look @ OCAU?

Overclocking non-K CPUs is pointless, you may gain a 1-2% boost which isn't worth it.

With a Z chipset you can increase the turbo multiplier 4 bins higher for non-K cpus. So a 3770 will do 4.3GHz & and all core turbo of 4.1GHz. That's not touching bclk. A bit more than 1-2% boost...

getting second handed processor is like getting used GPU's with a important difference, if you are looking for used locked processor your chances of getting a defective, damaged or abused item are reduced, since is locked, no OC or at least less possiblilties, when getting or looking for unlocked processors the chances of a damaged, abused or worn unit are bigger, but processors are stronger than GPU, many people get used without problems,

dude consider also getting SSD's, they have ultra fast write/read speeds, that will improve a lot your computer experience, moar speed, moar happines!

Older gen motherboards are expensive, also Z ones are a bit moar cuz they are high end chipset for most processors, not worth the money, marginally older products,

Yeah. Well, I can't remember the settings, since that's about 3½ years ago when I had that issue with 2GB VRAM :)

I'd not call that as real overclocking. And like peche said, getting a good motherboard for ancient hardware isn't cheap.

is interesting that there were 4GB variant for some older cards, i wish i had 4GB variant of the past GTX 680, one of my fellas have one, its a beast for OC, great performance on some games, also there were some GTX 700 series with 4 GB, the point was the $ difference between those series and the 2GB and 4 GB variant,

The 3GB versions of the 660 and 660ti were excellent cards and OC'd well. I currently have one of those a well as a 4GB 770 & 760.

Both will do the job, but Of course the 770 will perform better , it's like comparing a 2005 lambo with a 2018 camaro .

But seriously where did you find such cards for this price , i just bought a used 750 ti 2gb from asus for the same price .

60 was the initial buying price, but they both sold for $90 odd AUD and $120 AUD respectively. I missed out but instead managed to pick up a 280x for $110.

You get a better card than both two so it's not a loss. 280x aged significantly better than 770, with additional VRAM it should last you 6-8 months as per mentioned.

Would love to know the logic behind that statement because the math doesn't bare it out. His PSU is not up to the task of powering a GTX280. At stock speed, that card will draw 235w minimum, which is just under half of the power his PSU has to offer. A 460 or 560 would have been better on his PSU and give better performance.

he means the r9 280x aged better. the nomenclature is similar so i see were this train of thought came from.

edit: i assume this is what he meant because the op purchased an r9 280x.

R9 280x has really aged so well especially when it comes to DX12 territory it outperforms the 780 Ti! The problem is it's such an old power hog card which usually comes highly consumed with some rusty noisy fans. So yes I agree, an rx 460 would be the sweet spot for that price category, I had the nitro unlocked to 560 + OC, it was performing just like my current gtx 960. Another good pick could be the R9 380 it's the revised version of 280x you still got the massive DX12 boost while maintaining the dx11 performance slightly better than gtx 1050 ti. Its power consumption is acceptable, not so far from gtx 960 and maybe you can undervolt it.

Okay, well according to the sapphire website the 280x dual x only requires a minimum psu of 500w, whether that's correct or not I can't say. But at the moment I'm not currently experiencing any issues, but like I said, this card is temporary, and so if it does strain the psu or system, then it will not be for long.

given your system specs it should be just fine. i would say just run it in the system until you are ready to retire it and upgrade.

Yes that's what I meant. 280x aged better than any Kepler based GPU even compared to 780/Ti

Actually this is on the top 10 Worst comparisons

Read the whole post, then comment, OP already have a R9 280X, forget to mention or advise about other cards when he already got his card, makes zero sense and might confuse the op,

But at the moment I'm not currently experiencing any issues, but like I said, this card is temporary, and so if it does strain the psu or system, then it will not be for long.
skip these kindo of feedback, your system is quite well for this new card, you next better move might be and i5 / i7 and for sure SSD drive for speed boost in your Os and programs!

Read the whole post, then comment, OP already have a R9 280X, forget to mention or advise about other cards when he already got his card, makes zero sense and might confuse the op,

SSD is the best move IMO because you can carry it forward to the next system.

i totally still believe that i7 for cheap will be a great update, cuz older processor still able to provide smooth experience on newer games, there is a topic lying arround this forum were a user compare older processors with new ones, take a watch to it, you could see the minimal difference over ivy and skylake for example, so the price difference or the money investment for DDR3 or older systems owners is a little high for moving to DDR4 and newer systems, so i still believe that DDR3 older systems like OP have, will be upgraded with i5/i7 for at least 2 years giving a wise upgrade according price and performance....
those are my personal thoughts right,

He can always sell the i7 later when moving to the next platform at get back the cost, so its not a bad move. i7 hold their value way better than i5.
