it is pretty warm here at the moment as well.. in truth apart from running 24/7 for a year the cards have had a very easy life.. sadly the returns are that abysmal that i am about to turn them off..

the reported figures are good enough for me.. they are all running exactly the same as they did on day one.. i would love to leave them running for another year just to see but that dosnt look likely to happen..

I already "bought" a EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 that was used in mining... from myself. :laugh:

It's my gaming card now. (Loved the Titan XP but it was overkill).

I assure you it works fine. Biggest thing to worry about is the fans honestly...

Trust me, this philosophy is silly because they won't have trouble moving them. Guranteed. Heck if they are like me and game they'll likely just keep 'em. It's really just a "your loss" type situation.

Wow guys thanks for all the replies.. I didn't expect so many!! lol

I've still got my original RX 480's that I mined on, all been reflashed back to the bog standard bios it was shipped with, been tested and working fine.. Benchmarked and so on, they've been perfect. But then I guess it might depend on the card you buy.. I bought 6 Asus RX 480 Strix, they where bloody brilliant for the mining.. Without the tweaking of the bios and the power, a 6 card rig would rip through 1200w without a problem.. In the same time, tweaking them made it only use 700w.. That's a massive drop! But then at a max temp of 40C whilst mining during the cooler weather, (March, April etc) I was dead impressed and the fans were about the 40% mark, maybe a bit higher 44%?? But if I had done the same tweaks on a lesser card, I believe the outcome might not have been the same.. I had another 12 RX 480's (2 Strix and 10 Gigabyte G1's I think) and the Gigabyte cards where terrible in comparison, used more power, ran a load hotter and even where a shed load louder (so I was told, I bought them for my mate over in the US.. Long story but yeah that was when we first started...) I would have bought all Strix cards even when they cost a little more than the G1's, they where terrible..

But still, I shouldn't be considering 4 1080 Ti's really... I'd buy them in a shot with my old job, but being 5 times the amount down in wages for the year, I can't go crazy on hardware like I used to.. I know new 1080 Ti's are about the £700 mark still, the newer RTX cards are £700 just for 1080's.. The stop Asus Strix 1080 Ti is hitting over £1330... That's just bloody crazy.... I'm not paying that for a single card when I could nearly get 3 very decent cards for the same price!! I'll see if I can get the guy to drop his price a little bit but having knocked some cash off already, I think it'll be as low as I can go...

I'll report back after my moment of complete madness....

Depends on if I know the guy or not.

The thing most miners do that is dumb and unneccesary is rev up the fans. Pascal doesn't need that, and the fans on the GPU will fail way before anything else.

I don't know that I would say unnecessarily. Cooler vrm Temps lead to lower power consumption. The only real card failures I ran into were fans. Asus and gb fans are garbage. I had super low hour fans fail on both of them at a substantially higher rate than any other card. Good news is gb fan replacements are cheap, bad news is Asus is not.

I have a whole stack for sale and if they don't sell I'll just throw them in a pile with my other decades worth of GPU's. I am a bit of a tech hoarder so it changes nothing for me.

i think fans will only fail if the cards are running hot and the fans running fast trying to cool them.. there are about 20 slow running fans on my miner they have all passed the 24/7 one year test..

running at reasonable speeds fans will last for years..

used 1080ti cards in austria hit a low of 450.- as of yesterday-card was gone in a minute
so i will sell my 980ti(3years young now) for 200 to 250 and get me a 1080ti around 450.- i hope.
a lot of them where bought at end 2017 to 2018 so still warranty and i buy only with receipt.

A card used for an extended amount of time to mine was used @ whatever speed (under / stock / over clock) 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Although the card can "take the punishment", it wasn't designed for this kind of "abuse" and can likely start having degraded performance sooner because of this.

For the same reason, i would not buy a 2nd hand CPU if i knew it had been used for crunching (for example) 24 hours per day and 7 days per week for quite an extended period of time.

Doesn't matter if it's from ebay, from a friend or even from a relative. When i buy a GPU, i buy it for 4+ years, and the same for CPU.

Price is irrelevant.

I'll have no problem buying a used graphics card, and never have in the past, but a miner card has been going 24/7 for a while. Also I am not a fan of miners because of inflated GPU prices at the moment.

I've had an expensive few weeks with my daughter being down as well due to it being her birthday and so on, so time to save up rather than spend £2000 on a few GPUs lol

Do you have any research to support any of this?

I ask as my 7950/7870 rig mines on at the same performance, same temperature and same rates as they were new.

If you would like I can throw them in my gaming desktop and we can see how they compare to an "unabused" card.

I have several comments since I'm about to pull the trigger on a used card from a miner. First he's a long time TPU member and is trust worthy in my eyes. Second I'm no where in the market for a six hundred to one thousand dollar new video card. Third I can buy a card similar to what I have for less than half of what I paid for the first one and put it in SLI. But then again I'll really end up replacing the 780 TI in my youngest sons desktop... in the end I think it depends on whether or not the card is coming from known good source and what your situation is...

Just "my logic".

GPU cards are made with the "assumption" of working in idle for a vast majority of their usage lifetime and a small but sizable percentage @ "full throttle" (gaming, any other thing that fully utilizes the GPU). They are not designed with working 100% 24 / 7 for extended periods of time. Does not mean such cards will "break right away" after mining for such periods. The same train of thought for CPUs.

Let me make yet another car analogy. Say you'd wanted to buy a used Mercedes car: would you buy one you knew was used as a taxi for @ least 5 years? I'm betting you wouldn't due to the expected "way higher then normal" mileage of that car. It's basically the same principle here.
