Get a Jonnyguru review first before even buying a power supply.

Thermaltake can be a big-time hit and miss some of their units are great others are trash so tread carefully

well just had a browse around about that psu i linked .

Sometimes those star ratings people get paid say good stuff, do deep research first.

Don't buy a power supply over "good reviews" they are not qualified testers or reviewers just users, I'd stick to power supply tier lists and unbiased reviewers to give the verdict.

The last review I read on the 1080 suggested a TDP limit of 180W and a max draw of 178 (I think), I agree that a 520W is cutting it a little fine, the 470 you have pulls about 145 watt max, I think a good quality 650 will do you fine with some headroom.

thats what im looking at is 650w ones.

but the choice is quite hard really.albeit an important one.

I'm using the power numbers from w1zzard's review of the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus 11 Gbps 8 GB
Okay. Officially, your power supply does not support that GPU. Officially.
A 520 watt PSU should be big enough for what you have.
You may want to read JG's review and explanation of the HX520's "rails": Corsair HX520W 520W
A PSU that can put out 480 watts on the 12 volt rail(s) should have no problem with a ~235 watt GPU. I'm no PSU expert, but I think it can handle it, just get a 6 to 8 pin adapter. Here's my reasoning. That PSU has the following rails rated at 18 amps each:
12V2: PCI-e 1 and first two peripheral connectors
12V3: PCI-e 2 and last three peripheral connectors
ATX rated PCI-e power from connectors:
PCI-e slot: 75 watts
6 pin PCI-e connector: 75 watts
8 pin PCI-e connector: 150 watts.
Therefore, your PSU is set to provide a GPU 3 x 75 watts=225 watts. But those "rails" are rated at 18 amps, which is 216 watts EACH. Running a few watts over the rated capacity for a 6 pin connector is not a big deal, IMHO. AMD went over rated capacity for the R9 295.

You don't need a 700 watts PSU.
Here's the specs for the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS GOLD SSR-550FX

Notice that there is 540 watts available on the 12 volt rail. You only need to go bigger than 550 watts if you think there's (something like) a GTX 1080 Ti in your future.

Please don't buy CM PSU's. They make some real JUNK PSU's so I think they should be punished for that.

Sounds like a good idea, I guess the cooler master's aren't too bad but I've had no experience with them due to sticking with seasonic/be quiet

BTW, if the power draw of that MSI GTX 1080 ARMOR OC 8GB is more in line with the ASUS GTX 1080 Strix Gaming 8 GB's 203 watts, then it's even less of a problem.

I am in the same dilemma right now. I have a Radeon 6850 (6 years old - very old I know) and right now my FPS on all of the games are shit. I want to buy a 1050ti but they are super expensive where I currently reside and I don't pay that kind of money for a graphics card.
It does suck playing with low FPS so I don't know what to do. Should I just go ahead with a decent 2nd hand graphics card or blow some cash on a brand new card?

I bought two EVGA G+ 650w units from Ebuyer @stuartb04 , about £80. I couldn't see anything else that was around that price that was as good and I think they've even dropped a little bit since I bought them... Damn it seems I lied as they've put the damn price up.... :(

Or you have a 750 for £8 more...

Sorry @stuartb04 , I didn't realise they had put the prices up :(
No thats fine mate.

Getting a power cable adapter today so will try that out first and will report back.

Wait for 7nm or buy used 1000 series or even 980 Ti (which beats 1070 non-Ti custom vs custom).

I'd get 1070 Ti, 1080 or 1080 Ti.

They gave me destiny 2 for free. Which i spose isnt too bad.

But i already have it.

So if anybody wants the code, just DM me.

My experience was with a single GTX 1080 Ti that had a very hard time staying below 80°. If others are saying that the cooler works well on the 1080, then I should be ignored. I'd rather pay extra for a Gaming or ASUS Strix model, because of their history of cool, quiet and longevity.

Its not really that relevant. All Pascal cards will boost to thermal limits once you apply an OC and if you do, they all, Gaming X included, hit the 81~83C throttle temp.

Its the whole point of GPU Boost 3.0 when you don't care about efficiency and clock higher than stock. Better cooling = more headroom to maintain the clock you set.

The last review I read on the 1080 suggested a TDP limit of 180W and a max draw of 178 (I think), I agree that a 520W is cutting it a little fine, the 470 you have pulls about 145 watt max, I think a good quality 650 will do you fine with some headroom.

I'd rate a 1080 at 200-210W to be safe. They can easily peak to that.

happy as a pig in shit!!

LOL. First time I heard that one.

So i emailed ebuyer about the price change drop a day after i bought the gtx.

They gave me destiny 2 for free. Which i spose isnt too bad.

But i already have it.

So if anybody wants the code, just DM me.

Edit. Code is now gone.

I'd have asked for a refund and the code!! :) Not sure how much Destiny 2 is worth @stuartb04 so might have been over the drop in the card price...??
