So my 4790k is starting too act up as far as temps / overlocking -abilty. I have noticed it running hotter and hotter.

For the first new months I had the CPU I ran it with Stable OC of about 4.8 here and their mostly for benches .. but after that i just set it back to stock cause the OC was not needs... that was 3-ish years ago. About 3 -4 months ago I noticed my fans seems loud .. checked my idle temps and they seems high (35c - 37c) (house is kept at 22-ish c )... So removed the H115i Dusted everything bought MX4 (had old ArticSilver5 before) ...temps dropped to 30 and sound (fans) went down. But i did not bench or anything .. games I play are not CPU heavy.

This week...

I picked up A RTX 2080 and ran some benchs .. i was getting crushed from systems = to mine. So I did A tad OCing .. and my benchs got worse .... My CPU temps where thermal throttling 100c. So once again, I took the H115i / fans out and cleaned them ... added 2x more fans for push/pull SP > RAD > AF. Idle temps are now even lower at 27 - 30. some runs CPU will it 100c and sometimes 91c ... (this is all stock settings )
I have re-installed the waterblock a few times just to make sure it is on right . I used A rice size amount of Mx4 ea time ...with chris-crossing screws ....

Everything I read says Mx4 does not need too cure ...
Truth be told I have not run the CPU OCed that much .. however I due use it ALOT (way more then most people)

I am just confused , I have now reinstalled the water block 5 times .. everything is clean ...but my CPU temps are just all over ... What do yall think ? Time for Ryzen 7 2700x ?

Your AIO is clogged, and/or the pump is failing. How old is it?

Bought on March 2016 ...almost 2 years old .. (does not seems old) ... the Pumps RPMs seem too be stable 3120 rpm (prefromance)

Time for a delid from the looks of it.
Was thinking about that ... ...
However .. I noticed that my Core volts seems high ... bios stock settings is .. auto ... I think I seen it hit 1.38 or 1.36 .. that seems high ... to me

My 4790 was a little warmer than I wanted, so I Delidded it & dropped roughly 10c on an air cooler. I suggest you delid, its cheaper than replacing, & the tim in those chips was sloppy. I've never had a CPU "wear out", it's likely just starting to show its age slightly, but it's still a very capable chip

Yeah, auto VCore is generally much higher than needed, my 4770K defaults to 1.4V even though it'll run 4.9 @ 1.325V just fine. I'd try setting it to around 1.2-1.25V on both vcore & cache to see if that makes a big difference at stock.

How is auto high. Shouldn't it just read the vID from the chip and apply that? If your chip is 1.2v and Auto is setting 1.4v, something is scary wrong.

not on modern motherboards, thats default ,ie you have to select default not auto, because on auto the motherboard runs the shop how it wants and to save face and BSD issues ,that means high volts, im experiencing similar issues with my old FX8350, while presently crunching 24/7 with a stock coolermaster evo 212 cooler on it, i have had to default a few settings ,force 4Ghz and restrain the CPU in OS to keep temps below 85, Critical BSD temp

It's still within warranty period(5 years). So it shouldn't be clogged...yet. I mentioned it as a possibility since I recently had an Enermax AIO that clogged up on me and caused a similar overheating issue. It was just outside of the 2 year warranty period at the time it happened.

Your voltage is definitely high for stock mine is 1.27 stock and I only need 1.28 for 4.6. Yours are exceedingly high and they certainly won’t help your temperatures. Lowering them to something more reasonable would surely lower your temps.

My 4790k is still running at 4.7 @ 1.3875 Vcore BIOS setting ... hits 1.41 under stress testing and 1.51 fo micro seconds when AVX is present. Temps are maybe 1C higher than 5 yeas ago when installed. From what you have described, the most obvious source of the problem is the CLC. All CLCs have several common factors, not surprising since only two main OEM suppliers

1. Weak Pumps
2. Aluminum Rads / Copper Blocks

The two rules for water cooling are:

1. Never mix metals in a loop
2. Rad fans always blow in

Corsair correctly complies with Rule 2 but not Rule 1. For a science lesson read this...

https://martinsliquidlab.wordpress.com/2012/01/24/corrosion-explored/

For the quick answer look at this

https://martinsliquidlab.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/copperaluminumcorrosion.jpeg

Your AIO is 2 years and 8 months old. Corrosion inhibitors in the coolant have a useful life of 18 months

That is thermal throttling. CPU clocked down, GPU can't do work, temp drops.

Would refrain from keeping this up. The quick fix is voltage adjustments, stay at or under 1.3V and even the crappy CLC should be able to cope, FOR NOW. But in the meantime, do something with your cooling.

Pro tip: high end air. No hassle, same performance.

I refuse AIO or liquid coolers altogether because of the maintenance needed over time. Air coolers do wonders for me and a good one, while costly, is still overall cheaper.

Plus, as others said, that voltage is rather high for stock. Higher than my 4770.

You definitely need to reign in those voltages as well. I can’t believe they’re that high for stock. I’m sure mine would be on fire with that high voltages. ASUS isn’t known to be conservative then left alone but even with my minor 4.6 OC it was still only autoing at 1.3 and as always I just put a small negative offset on it and leveled it out at 1.28

Yea the default setting in bios (and is newest one ... 2016 grr) is just Auto ... I changed it to 1.21 and seems to run fine will everything else stock/auto (other then XMP) However .. i still think my load temps are off / all over ... so I went ahead and ordered the NH-D15s. Free amazon 1day shipping .. so I should know if it was the AIO soon enough ... ... looking into delidding now ( probably going to have silicon lottery do it for me , they are just on the other side of town too)

Consider also that the motherboard might be getting old? VRMs, caps, etc wear out. A mobo/cpu combo that could do a certain clock at a certain voltage in the past may not be able to in the future.

When you go for air, take a look at your case airflow/case fan setup as well. Its not usually the same as you would do it with an AIO.

In most cases it is optimal to have positive pressure, the simplest setup being 2x front intake, 1x back out. Also more fans isn't always better, but bigger fans are.

Open case can be worse than one with good airflow though. And it is worse if you consider dust.

Yea ... not sure wtf is going on really with it ... Today i was watching youtube and the AIO (fans) kicked in max .. looked at my temps ... they were 70c (???) ... open task manger and system was using 40% of my cpu ...restarted comp and went to run malawerbytes .... CPU temps hit 100 when that was running..

reinstalling windows .. just cause and the NH-15s will be here today

-----
edit ...

HMMM .. so XMP seems to raise my CPU temp alot ... 10+ degrees

hmmm ok it still does it with out xmp too .. just less .... .... seems too be random .. I have now seen my cpu hit 100 surfing the web

Your AIO is clogged, and/or the pump is failing. How old is it?

For the quick answer look at this

https://martinsliquidlab.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/copperaluminumcorrosion.jpeg

Your AIO is 2 years and 8 months old. Corrosion inhibitors in the coolant have a useful life of 18 months
I refuse AIO or liquid coolers altogether because of the maintenance needed over time. Air coolers do wonders for me and a good one, while costly, is still overall cheaper.

Plus, as others said, that voltage is rather high for stock. Higher than my 4770.

NH-15s installed ... Have run Timespy Extreme A few times now ... Max temps are ....(DRUM ROLL) ... 59c

So its seems it was the AIO ... if any changes .. will update post

Thanks Everyone !
