The only one game where we can get our eyes on NVIDIA's RTX tech, for now, is DICE's Battlefield V - and that game's RTX implementation comes with some astounding performance hits that compromise the whole experience's fluidity and resolution, even on NVIDIA's top of the line RTX 2080 Ti. The second game to offer support for the NVIDIA technology, though, won't even be available for most western gamers: Justice is an MMO that is geared towards the Chinese market, and is of very little impact on the rest of the world.

However, that doesn't mean the game doesn't have a very wide reach in its intended market, and that's obviously part of the reason why NVIDIa is partnering with NetEase in bringing DLSS, improved reflections, and caustic effects on light sources. There's an accompanying video showcasing the new NVIDIa technologies in effect - accompanied by the frame rate drops that attest to just how taxing these are on current RTX-enabled hardware. It's been a while now since NVIDIA released its RTX 20-series to market with the promise of increased relevance for ray tracing in games rendering and development, but limitations in the implementation (vendor-specific and hardware-locked to the higher tiers of NVIDIA products) mean the user base leaves something to be desired, thus driving slower developer adoption (absent of a partnership with NVIDIA).

RTX will effing die, just like Physix and hairworks. insted of investing into optimizing turning for better performance and value, they opted for a gimmick that NOBODY have asked for.

Neither of those have really *died*.. and it is PhysX and Turing. Also, RT has been highly sought after since the dawn of CG.

As for content of the article, they should have shown it in 1080p, RTX at 4K isn't feasible yet.
I believe RTX should have been a dedicated card just like the old PhysX days then eventually engineered into the GPU but I don't know shit about engineering chips.

Agree.

By removing RT's portion of RTX cards, they could beef up the rest of the chips and deliver better performing cards, and by making a dedicated card for RT, they could beef it up as well and have it also perform better, but this would also mean that it would be up to nVidia to make RT work instead of game developers.

Even little huang knows that his gullible customers won't buy another card for it LOL. They killed physx trying to force people.

Except, unlike PhysX, RT capable cards are actually useful for non-gaming scenarios: just ask @xkm1948 and @T4C Fantasy , for example.

It's a shame really because they could have made 2000 series cards real monster cards by adding more brute force in place of RT capabilities but they opted to introduce eye-candy instead and ... and that works great ... with only 50% - 75% performance hit ... @ 1080p ...

If you think nvidia is going to sell you a compute card for less than enterprise money....

They should have waited till 7nm, but investors or someone's ego was demanding a new release. And, apparently, tons of morons at nvidia thought RT was a good con to sell cards. All of the execs should be fired. Investors need to get off their asses.

Did i say anything about them selling the 2000 series cards without RT for less than they currently cost?

Did i mention @ all suggested prices for a dedicated RT card? nVidia being nVidia, would probably make it cost $1500+.

Back to topic: any word on performance for this title so we can compare to battlefield 5 and see if the performance hit with RT isn't as severe?

That's what I meant. A die full of RT/tensor would be multiple of Gs just because or it would be gimped to only gaming.

Meh just another tech nvidia will ruin.

Although the others EG SLI where from 3DFX.
Physics from another company.

Ray traying was probably from another company they assimilated...

If there graphics cards where not over inflated because of there arrogance I might care.
Mining has stopped older cards still cost more the RRP.

I watched the video twice and apart from that puddle in the street, this is nothing to even remotely care about. Its the same picture, with some overdone reflective surfaces. Nowhere does RT even remotely change the immersion or feel of the scene, anywhere. Not even in BFV for that matter.

My assumption was that they didn't make it a secondary card because physx did that in the Ageia days and nobody ever bought one. A gaming GPU you will always need in order to game. Adding extra features on top of current tech seems like a good decision from a business pov. This is the best strategy to get new tech that "nobody needs or really wants" (this statement can be argued ofc), to get adopted by users and developers in current and future titles.

I have gladly bought an RTX 2080 instead of GTX 1080ti, just because I didn't want old tech and was happy to embrace and contribute to this new direction computer graphics is following.

Yeah the adoption factor was my best guess but probably more likely some engineering thing is why it is on die. I do hope it gets adopted more and future iterations show a lot of improvement.

i cant remember any other

but yes first gen of any tech will always sucks

- dx9c shader 3 sucked for nvidias 6800, ati did not even bother lol, it took several years and a new gen of consoles to see shader 3
- physx 1 gen lol, all gens
- dx11 tessellation lol, barely used even today, first cards were too weak, even today
- dx12/vulkan does not even exist
- rtx? it will fail too because newer consoles wont have this, just another fad

i hate how during la ifespan of consoles i have to change 2-3 times a mid-end gpu to keep with the current games

Pro tip: save up a bit and buy a higher end GPU, doesn't have to be top end, but x80 is generally a very good place to be in the Nvidia line up. In the long run you save money and you have a better performance level the whole time - the resale value of high end GPUs is a LOT better if you time your sale and upgrade right. Mid range GPUs go obsolete because they lack VRAM or core grunt, high end GPUs just offer a more consistent experience and the worst thing that happens is you move a slider to high instead of ultra.

(My god this almost sounds like a 'The more you buy, the more you save'... painful :D )

you are sort of right but not

the best buy for me has always been buy when midrange is 2x the power of your midrange

4830-gtx460-270x-rx580

but yes, i regret the 270x, i should have bought 7950 3gb / 280x 3gb they were was more future proof, 2gb was a bad idea, maybe i would still be using the 280x

i care about perf/$, high end card are way too expensive and offer barely max 50% more power than the mid range

for example

2 x 580 (just theoretically , i know SLI sucks)= 2080? but 450=/=800$

the best buy for me has always been buy when midrange is 2x the power of your midrange

You're right about that 280X which was in fact the HD7970. Its 3GB made it last. Perf/dollar/useful lifetime is a better metric when it comes to this debate. And midrange GPUs simply don't last as long, so the initial perf/dollar may be good, but if you replace it and buy another card, you've completely destroyed that advantage. On top of that, if you sell your GPUs regularly to get an upgrade, say once every 1,5-2 years, you actually spend less than you would when compared to selling that midrange GPU in the same timeframe.

I get what you're saying though, at face value it may seem like the perf/dollar of high end cards is worse. It works that way with many purchases, the high end option is initially more expensive, but it tends to pay itself back over time and/or in resale. Not always, but often.

On the other hand, look at the 1070ti and the 1080... That midrange GPU is pretty close to it...

mirrors edge
metro
borderlands 2
a crappy game with some guy who could fly with a rocket in his back
ghost recon advance warfighter

i cant remember any other

but yes first gen of any tech will always sucks

- dx9c shader 3 sucked for nvidias 6800, ati did not even bother lol, it took several years and a new gen of consoles to see shader 3
- physx 1 gen lol, all gens
- dx11 tessellation lol, barely used even today, first cards were too weak, even today
- dx12/vulkan does not even exist
- rtx? it will fail too because newer consoles wont have this, just another fad

i hate how during la ifespan of consoles i have to change 2-3 times a mid-end gpu to keep with the current games
That crappy game is called Dark void. Also a F2P game called HAWKEN also used physix
