is the EVGA and XFX 680i the same board

are these two board the same all i see that is different is the XFX has a fan on the chipset and EVGA dosn't well im buying a new board to replace my pice of crap asus striker extreme any ideas thanks

They have the exact same specs.
The only difference is that
1. They are made by different companies.
2. The cooling on each board is different

These companies just took the reference board and put their names on it.

From what I have heard, these boards are the same.
Now the bios with each board is different.
I have not heard much about the bios for each one so I cannot help you there.

However, as far as the board itself, all 680I boards are identical to each other.
Also, all 680LT boards are identical to each other.
All the vendors did was slap their logo on the reference board.

My mate has the EVGA model and we found the BIOS rather restricting. We also had to RMA the first one.

If you're going to add your own cooling, and are not running SLI, consider the 650i.

Consider instead anything not based on the 680i, it's got a ridiculous price tag (all I've seen is prices ranging from £130-200), and the feature set may be decent, but if you're not running SLi, and want to overclock, a less restrictive motherboard is available, something like an Asus P5 series with an Intel chipset (just for example).

I agree, as the board is also slightly slower than the Intel chipset and is also for some absurd reason therefore more expensive.

Less restrictive? Can you please tell me how the 680i motherboards are more restrictive than the P5 series?

The only P5 series board that comes close to the 680i boards in terms of the number of overclocking/overvolting options is the P5B-Deluxe, and that board is just as expensive as the 680i boards, and the P5B-Deluxe is going for ~$180, while the eVGA 680i board goes for ~$160.
