My friend gifted me a copy of Fallout 76. So I kinda felt obligated to play it with him. So I've been... ehm.. playing Fallout 76.
There. I said it, I've been playing Fallout 76.
But that's not even the worst part: the worst part is that it isn't actually that bad. I mean, I went into it expecting like, well, a piece of poop of a game. But honestly it's really not that bad. We've been playing it for a few hours and I honestly found myself quite enjoying it. The experience we had with other players was generally positive; we had a quest to defend a building and there was like 5-6 other players and we were all sticking together to cover the entrances and it felt honestly fun. The only time someone actually shot at me, I didn't die because the game has an anti-PvP system whereby you take very little damage unless you retaliate and initiate PvP. So there was this other player taking pot-shots at me and then they stopped after I didn't engage PvP. And that was that. Otherwise it's pretty fun to explore the Wasteland with my best friend!
On the other hand I think the game looks really dated considering it's a 2018 AAA release. I mean it's not that bad graphically, but .. meh. At 1080p native resolution it looks like garbage because the built-in AA is just crap. So I'm running it with VSR at 3200x1800 which smooths it out quite nicely. Performance is mediocre too, I am getting sub 60FPS (CPU bound) in many places even with a 2600X running at near 4 GHz all of the time. And this is with my tweaked settings to lower draw distance (mainly shadows) that I carried over from my experience with Fallout 4. The engine really needs replacing...
Though I did hear it was a lot worse during the beta. I think it's had a couple of patches since then. But yeah, me and my best friend always had these chats where we would say who would win between our Fallout 4 characters if they were to fight... lol, now we can test that theory (But I suck at competitive PvP games so.. meh). But honestly I just enjoy the PvE element of it.
Excuse the cliché cat picture, couldn't resist
