My friend gifted me a copy of Fallout 76. So I kinda felt obligated to play it with him. So I've been... ehm.. playing Fallout 76.

There. I said it, I've been playing Fallout 76.

untitled.png

But that's not even the worst part: the worst part is that it isn't actually that bad. I mean, I went into it expecting like, well, a piece of poop of a game. But honestly it's really not that bad. We've been playing it for a few hours and I honestly found myself quite enjoying it. The experience we had with other players was generally positive; we had a quest to defend a building and there was like 5-6 other players and we were all sticking together to cover the entrances and it felt honestly fun. The only time someone actually shot at me, I didn't die because the game has an anti-PvP system whereby you take very little damage unless you retaliate and initiate PvP. So there was this other player taking pot-shots at me and then they stopped after I didn't engage PvP. And that was that. Otherwise it's pretty fun to explore the Wasteland with my best friend!

On the other hand I think the game looks really dated considering it's a 2018 AAA release. I mean it's not that bad graphically, but .. meh. At 1080p native resolution it looks like garbage because the built-in AA is just crap. So I'm running it with VSR at 3200x1800 which smooths it out quite nicely. Performance is mediocre too, I am getting sub 60FPS (CPU bound) in many places even with a 2600X running at near 4 GHz all of the time. And this is with my tweaked settings to lower draw distance (mainly shadows) that I carried over from my experience with Fallout 4. The engine really needs replacing...

Though I did hear it was a lot worse during the beta. I think it's had a couple of patches since then. But yeah, me and my best friend always had these chats where we would say who would win between our Fallout 4 characters if they were to fight... lol, now we can test that theory (But I suck at competitive PvP games so.. meh). But honestly I just enjoy the PvE element of it.

Excuse the cliché cat picture, couldn't resist :p

$200....

Any story worth mentioning?
Eeh, there was a questline from leaving the Vault where you have to go find and listen to a bunch of logs from the overseer, and it also tells you about the Scorched a bit, through notes/logs etc but there are no actual talking human NPCs in the game as far as I'm aware. I've only played 5-6 hours so far so I can't really say much if there is more story bits further on.

tsk tsk, you've been taking the red pill. Take the blue and you'll be properly calibrated to dislike it. :p

But seriously, the Duke Nukem reboot was widely panned, but was actually a good game and really liked the crass humour in it. Call of Duty: Ghosts was another game widely hated, but when I played it, I thought it had a gripping storyline and great gameplay. So yeah, don't let bad reviews put you off. The only thing I would take serious note of, is if the game is reported to have lots of technical issues such as crashing, or save games not working etc.

There's no reason anyone should feel bad for enjoying a game. I would say the biggest criticism of failout 76 , is the misleading news from developers , always online, constant or a least common server disconnect that reset everything except your ammo usage, forcing players to be in an always online environment but forcing them both to agree to engage in multiplayer combat, I think the list is pretty well known.

Bad reviews for fallout aren't getting any one gamer anything , The point is a unified front to stop cash grab's, as well as sub par game releases under the guise of AAA titles, Not to mention flat out lying. the principle of the situation is the most important part, gamers deserve better for their money .

Nobody should feel sorry for playing any game and enjoying it. I played arma (which is arguably one of the worst running games in the history of PC gaming), and I'm sure that I've logged over 1000 hours.

If you enjoy the game, that's good, that's the point, the problem is the 85% of people who didnt enjoy it ,and who paid good money for it. I'm glad you like it, i just wish more did (like my 2 nephews who i bought each a cooy :( ) at full price $130 all together.

Actually it is because like it or not. what they did there was still false advertising. That's why the FTC got involved. I understand what you mean when you say 'Fools & Money' though but there are folks out there who do collect useless shit like this the same way some people collect vintage cars.

If guy on ebay has a picture of a car that he is selling and you buy that car based on the images that he uploaded but it turns out to be some battery powered childrens toy with the car manufacturers logo on it, wouldnt you be pissed or would you shrug your shoulders and carry on, because thats exactly what it sounds like youre saying you'd do.

people put down money on something that turned out wasnt the same as what was in the picture, People complained, Bethesda made silly excuses - canvas shortage 2018, too expensive to produce, cant do anything about it etc etc. But they lied because they did make them and they shipped them out or gifted them to social media 'influencers' FOR FREE who probably have little to no interest in the game.

If you went to a top notch restaurant, paid and exorbitant fee for a table full of food because the picture looked good in the menu. but got a single plate of mush, wouldnt you be pissed? or would eat it and say it "makes no difference in that respect;)" food is still food right?

dont defend bethesda for their crappy behavior.

No one should ever pre-order a game. Don't preorder any game from any developer. It has only downside, no upside.

I'm not contesting that one bit, it was crappy behaviour and they will lose that case in court, if it gets there.

i think if it was cheaper and had some cool single player side areas/missions so i dont just have to rely on the jamokes next to me to make tht gameplay experience happen, would be great. As a member of one of the most toxic online communities (League) im super skeptical about multiplayer only fallout.

Or maybe the game is just youtube bait. A sandbox for youtubers to do stupid stuff in except it turned out a lot worse than expected.

I'm quite convinced that the only reason Fallout 76 was produced is because of PUBG and Fortnite success stories. Somewhere up the tree someone thought Fallout should also have a piece of that pie, with an RPG twist to make it unique. You can't say its a bad idea to begin with. But then there is the execution of it.

I mean go figure: timed/zoned events, game world changes, no NPCs, everyone for himself, alliances on the fly. Striking similarities yet still original enough to be a game of its own. Its a pretty strong concept when you mix it with the Fallout franchise. The idea of running to nuclear devices to capture/use them is straight up awesome in an MP environment. It also reminds me of The Division that uses a similar concept to get players to converge on different spots on the map.

If it was on Idtech6 engine than it wouldn't be bad. Only stating IDtech because bethesda, otherwise other engines would be better like Cry engine.

Actually Escape from Tarkov is kind of similar to that concept.

Execution is everything and Bethesda failed now if they'd have just taken FO4 and added multiplayer/PVP with better graphics (like they promised) then maybe this cluster fuck of crap might have been a good game but they didn't and it isn't

I dunno if anybody has played Conan Exiles, but, is it anything like that? CE has PvP servers and PvE, or mixed depending on time of day.... Official and unofficial, anti-cheat and non anti... some servers full and some pretty much dead.... I was into tjat game for a while, normally when I get a week of vacation I'll burn it all away on that lol. Pretty fun at times--does F76 compare at all to it?

I thought Exiles was closer to Rust/ARK.
