New computer, problem, need help

Hey guys, i bought a second workstation computer, HP Z400 and i have everything install, gpu, hard drives, dvd drive, when the computer loads up, it passes the hp logo, i can't enter bios/setup or anything, then all this writting comes up, one of them is " this version supports only Hard Disk and CDROM drives" ACHI install, etc
I cant't click on anything, nothing works, it says hit f1 to enter bios, nothing. it just hangs at the black screen with the text with the number 16 in the top right corner.
i change batteries, nothing. it also says time and date is wrong, etc. I just find it odd that no key on the keyboard does anything to pass the screen.

wtf is my desktop dead , i just bought it. I have never seen anything like this ever.

Disconnect all storage and optical drives, if they are IDE make sure they are correctly configured for master/slave. Boot up.

I unhooked everything, nothing works. still at the freaking black screen with the same stupid messesages. I know damn well i don't have to have a good working battery to get pass that screen. also my keyboard isn't even working on the computer. let me go use my battery on this computer and keyboard and see what happens.

ugh, i found the problem. damn keyboard i have doesn't work. I have some glow in the dark keyboard and for some odd reason it won't work with the desktop. So i had to use another keyboard lol. 2 hours trying to figure out what the problem was and it was my keyboard, that's a first haha.

Question, my CPU is around 43, but why is my motherboard so freaking hot at idle, 68-71c

Bad airflow? Prebuilt machines aren't known for great airflow. The CPU at least would have some air moving over it, whatever the system temp is reading maybe not so much...

plenty of space and air flowing happening. also i notice my fan is load even though i have it at the lowest idle settings in bios. you can see, plenty of space. my cpu temp is cool though around 39-43

Ummm, he already found the problem - bad keyboard. This would not be a heat issue anyway.

The System Temperature is so high because HP really designed this computer poorly. There is no airflow down over the motherboard. They have just the tower CPU cooler, which pushes no air down onto the motherboard, and the back case fan, again not really moving air across the motherboard.

It should be noted those sensors probably cost $1 for a 100 of them. They are not high tech or known for accuracy. The system temp typically is the chipset temp. As newtekie1 noted, you need to make sure there is plenty of air flow over that too. Check your cable management to make sure it is restricting air flow as little as possible. And of course, make sure your system is free of heat trapping dust.

In looking at the insides of your computer from that video I see one problem and that is the CPU cooler uses a side firing fan (instead of a downward firing fan) and it is blowing parallel to your chipset (the silver heatsink just below the CPU). So that heatsink gets zero benefit from the CPUs fan and that is too bad. Is there a place to mount a front fan to pull more cool air in?

If not, you might look at replacing that rear fan with a fan that can move more air.

Alright i solved the loud fan noise, the GTX 550 ti draws way too much, so i put in a spare Quadro card K600 (for the moment) and the fan is quiet now and temps on the CPU is around 40c and the GPU 50c.
As for the motherboard: Hewlett-Packard 0B4Ch (CPU0 PROCESSOR) 66 °C , watching a video in 4K it runs smooth no issues, temps for the MB heats up to 71c.

So what you guys are saying i need a computer fan that is blowing towards the heatsink? I have two fans i can add to the computer and just have them blowing towards it.

I am saying it looks like you need more air flow through the case.

You could try blasting a desk fan into the open case and see if that affects your system temps. If it does, that means you could benefit from more air flow. If the temp does not change significantly, then it may just be a bad sensor.

BTW, how are you measuring those temps? I generally recommend HWiNFO64 though it can provide so much information it can be overwhelming. So if you select “Sensors only” when prompted, then scroll down to your motherboard’s section to see the temps, you can more easily see what is happening without being swamped with information.

Yea i plan to buy a fan tomorrow , and also I'm going to buy a Xeon L5630, which is much much cooler, similar to my L5640 on my other workstation. I will check out HWINF064 and let you know.

Unless it comes with a downward firing cooler, or a side firing that blows over the chipset heatsink, the fact that Xeon runs cooler does not mean anything as it will not affect the chipsets heat production.

I personally don't feel any of your temps are too high. If the chipset needed better cooling, the motherboard maker would have mounted a different cooler that used a fan.

so it really is 70c for the MB? and that's normal for idle? right now its at 66c. I guess if it doesn't go up to 80+ 90 it should be ok. will keep an eye on it.

That is assuming that that temperature reading is even correct. Hardware monitoring programs don't always pick up the correct sensors and their readings. I mean, I guarantee you that your motherboard isn't running at -55°C, so we know the sensors aren't being picked up all that accurately.

If something was overheating, you'd know.

Got one of these? If you do and if you can focus it onto the chipset die or at least the inner base of the chipset heatsink, you might get a better idea of the real temp.

Frankly, I would not be worried about this unless the temps were up in the 90°s or higher, or if you were experiencing unexplained system lock ups, reboots, or shutdowns.

I've got a few Z400s. How many memory slots does your board have, 4 or 6? If 6, I recommend you get a W3680/90 CPU. These are multi unlocked. Mine came with W3680s & OEM Asetek 545LC AIO coolers. They also have a stock ghetto mod bracket @ 45deg from the back plane with a fan angled to cool the VRM, as well as a plastic air guide around the memory modules. I've run mine @ 4.0GHz all core turbo for years. The Z400 PSU pinouts aren't entirely ATX, so a mod/adapter is required for standard ATX PSU. If you install a 6-core WSM with stock 4-pin or aftermarket cooler, you'll need to run a ground wire to the 5-pin PWM CPU fan header to avoid POST error message.

Well i just turn on the idle fan up to 3 bars, half way and the fan isn't too loud and the temps for the CPU stays at 64 when pretty much doing anything. So i believe i fixed the issue. Thanks for all the advice though.

Just an update, well i think its the "memory". In the bios it says mem which says for memory/ram, that has sensors? and that is heating up i believe. thus why its showing the motherboard around 66c or 70c. so is something wrong possible with the ram sticks? its only 6GB 3 sticks.

Understood. You have the Rev2 board. 2.2-2.8GHz leaves a lot of gaming performance on the table for WSM. I'd not run 16GB , though. Performance is better with symmetrically loaded memory banks & ideally only one module per bank. All mine came with 16GB (4x4GB) with 2 modules in the first bank & ran @ 1066. They run optimally with 12GB (4GBx3) @ 1333. Mem speed will drop to 1066 if unbalanced or with 6 modules.

I've got OEM Hynix & Samsung ECC that don't get much above 30C (ambient of ~22C), but our cooling setups are different. I wouldn't be too worried about software readings for temp, it's likely sensor/calibration/offset.

You can also use another util for monitoring temps to get another perspective on this.
Some work better than others, that's just a fact and one I've noted that seems to work well with things is OHM. It's free and easy to get but I'm not aware of a standalone download as in it's separate from the way I got it for my use.
However it can be had easily, just download the benchmark program called HWbot X265, unzip it and once extracted you can then go into the program's folder and find OHM within it's own folder.

Since it's a standalone program you don't have to keep X265 itself, just copy the containing folder for OHM elsewhere and then delete the entire X265 folder if you want. After that, make your shortcut to desktop, start the program and see what it says.

I'm assuming the MB temps like some of yall said is not accurate, because if the computer was really over heating i would know it. I have the fan running so its around 53-64c, never goes above that. The 3 hard drives are around 39c and the GTX 550 TI is 43c.

He'll then need to replace the motherboard - it's non standard. It's possible to mod a new case, but then the PSU won't fit - non standard size & non ATX pinout. He's just wasted money at that point...

I usually avoid OEM systems, unless it's for a specific job or parts. I only rescued mine from recycling because they were high spec & the admin was a comedian & mirrored the shared network drive on the internal 160GB SSDs. They filled up & the systems slowed to a crawl. The kids needed upgrades for their C2Qs ~4yrs ago, so it was worth lugging them to the car.

Good to hear. WSM runs cooler than NHM esp sub 3GHz. The velociraptor will keep the other drives warm.
