i7 7700k gift. advice please.

ive just been given a I7 7700K and 32GB of ddr4 vengence @3000 i believe, now i know nothing about intel cpus and was wondering what motherboard i should be looking for, it will be used to run my telescope and imaging softwear as im using a fx8350 at the mo and i think the 7700k would be a bit faster and up to todays kit.
the thing is im skint at the mo i havnt really recovered from christmas. so id like to spend no more than £100 if thats possable with may later upgrading to a better one.

Ideally you'd be looking at a Z-270 board but you could probably get away with B250 or H270 board and those are more budget orientated so wont have all the bells and whistles when it comes to overclocking and it would be a real shame if you didnt OC that CPU.

it would be much faster and more efficient. Any z170 board with M.2 Gen 3x4 should work fine I like Asus and Gigabyte.

Z270 boards sell for mere pennies of ebay, that is what you should be looking for.

Unless you want to overclock you could also look at H270 boards. the 7700K is valid at stock because it has much higher boost frequencies. Overclocking wouldn't be worth it in my opinion if you are running professional applications. MSI make some pretty good boards, something like this would work for this CPU if you want to buy a brand new board with warranty for less than 100 pounds:

SCAN only have a few Z270 in stock as it is a fairly outdated platform. I did check amazon there are some boards on there of the Z270 variety, used, for less than a 100 pounds.

Keep in mind 7700K all-core boost is 4.4 GHz, overclocking to 5.0 GHz is only a 14% increase in performance assuming linear scaling. Of course getting the Z270 and gaining that 14% is still a good idea but these days I only really see overclocking as useful if you're gaming and your application uses like 1-2 cores. ~shrug~ Also you would need a cooler capable of handling it.

You are right but then you have issues of stability and heat / power consumption which I'm factoring in because op seems to want to use this build for professional apps? If their cooler for the FX has the intel mounting they could use that I guess but ~shrug~

Maybe I'm just being overcautious (*checks OP's spec and sees the FX is overclocked too*).

It can be... the overclock just needs to be stable. I highly doubt its data center level stability that is needed here for a home user, but you never know. Heat and power use I cannot is a factor in for prof. apps, honestly.

The option is there and a viable one should he choose to use it.

As examples with the 7700K I have an ASRock OC Formula that is an excellent board, although it's a Z170 (Tad dated by now) it has plenty of features (And I mean plenty of them) and can clock the snot out of it if you want.
I've also ran mine in my Maximus VIII Impact, tiny little board that although spartan in features it can also push this chip hard.

Out of the two the OCF would be my choice for an everyday build except that I'm running a Maximus IX Hero (Z270) in it right now and yes, ran just fine in it as well, the Hero itself having alot of nice features itself.

Good point above about the BIOS with a Z170 based board, not impossible to make it work as I had to flash my OCF's chip with my programmer to get around the issue but it worked.

BTW these board models are reasonable priced, not sure how it translates into pounds vs dollars but I got the OCF and Hero for around $80 each, the Impact was $100 open box from Newegg.

thanks all for all the good advice guys, going on what you have enlighten me with a Z270 is my best bet, i dont fancy getting a board that i have to flash before use like the Z170. on ebay s/h the Z270 are going from £40 to £80 2/h which is well with in my price range. it would be nice to overclock as i allways do. im really looking forward to using a intel the only other intel i have owned is my macbook pro i7. thanks again and ill let you know what i buy and post pics of the finnished rig. i think there will be more querys. charl.

I dont think that board is that great for OC though. It is pretty basic

Good to around 4.6gig normally, if the OP wants more (4.8 plus) in the budget sector for a new board then I would suggest then he will need something Like an Asus prime or Asus Z270 P, but at that point he is going beyond 100 quid, personally I would rather have a new board and a little less overclocking rather than an unproven board with the hope of better overclocking and what might be little warranty.

Also at EBuyer is the Asrock Z270 Pro4 at 58 quid and that should give similar or slightly better overclocking than the D3, if he wants to go fairly extreme then budget boards are not for him in any case.

i run my FX8350 at 4.8 24/7 so if i could get around the same from 7700k id be well happy but 5ghz would be better like without wanting to melt the house down like the FX

. i know that £100 isnt going to go far against a good OC mobo but something 2/h might do for now. i have a good 240mmAIO ready to go on it.

This is great board i build one PC for someone with this. Its smaller than a standard atx motherboard at about 20cm wide. I have the ddr3 version z170 version though, it looks exactly the same. It can take the 7700k to 5Ghz but I just left it at stock and let the boost kick in. It take cpu to a nice 4.4 or 4.5Ghz if I recall right.

Most 7700K's can do 4.7-4.8 pretty easily, and run decently cool, just make sure you get a half decent board
