I haven't bought a new gaming card since I bought my GTX970 (for me). I've been holding out until today.. I just pulled the trigger on a MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 2070 Duke. I got it for $480 on amazon. I want to see how it pairs with my 2600k @4.0ghz. I plan to upgrade to a R5 3600 or R5 2600. I still haven't made up my mind. Also, this upgrade is purely driven for VR. Honestly all pancake games play just fine on my gtx970 and my 2600k feels just as snappy as my 5820k @4.5ghz. But, it's just time to step up to whatever for VR and then give the 2600k to my oldest daughter to game on.

So, does anyone know if Nividi has a game bundle? The card will be here Sunday. It would be nice to get a few free games.

Pancake games? Is that what we call games run on a normal monitor now?

As far as VR, I'm sure you know much more about it than I do. I just know that it can be really temperamental with framerates, and your 4.5GHz 5820k (being 500MHz faster and benefiting from whatever % faster it is clock for clock) would do you better. Not so much for high FPS, but for maintaining higher minimums. In any case, I'm sure the 2070 can drive it well.

Regarding the Ryzen upgrade... I'm not sure how much better the 2600 could possibly be than your 5820k. It might even be worse, for gaming that is, especially in VR. It's not going to clock as high as your 5820k, but it does have comparable performance per clock... but you also lose out on the quad channel memory. It'll be a sidegrade, at best.:fear:That said, it remains to be seen what Zen 2 will bring. Zen+ has finally (mostly) caught up, it's up to Zen 2 to go beyond now.

Yea, I don't think I'll use my 5820k for gaming. It's going on 4 years old now. If anything I'll go back with Intel if the new r5 3600 doesn't live up to the hype. Trust me if it doesn't it's not going to hurt my feelings.. hehe It won't be the first time AMD lets me down. lol Thanks man! but I may try and see what the 5820k can do with the 2070 for S and G's. :toast:

Who cares if it's 4 years old, though? You and I both know CPUs haven't advanced all that much in recent years outside of core count. You'll get something like 5.1GHz out of the best 9900K chips if you're lucky, which is only 600MHz shy of your current 5820k, without much improvement in performance per clock. The increased frequency and almost negligible performance per clock are there, but it's not really that much.

I stand by my previous recommendation to just cruise with ye olde 5820k if Zen 2 fails to impress.

2070 would serve you well in VR!

For me the transition was from FuryX to 2080Ti. Man it makes VR experience WAAAAAY better.

It should come with Anthem / BF5.
The way it works here is you need to register the card and they send you a code.

For $1300 it better be.
Anyway my friend did actually put an Asus 2070 Turbo in his ITX VR shoe box that he carries around, so it is perfect for that.

@hat @xkm1948 and @Zubasa Thanks guys! The card will be here tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I'm a little excited to see how FO4VR handles now. One of the main reasons I picked this card is because of the USB Type-C connection for VR HMD coming on the next gen.

So, I have it in finally. I had to put it into the bottom pci-e slot.. I'll have to modify my case to get it in the top spot. I remove the harddrive bay years ago when I bought a MSI GTX 680PE Lighting card.. The Top part of the harddrive cage is still in so I'll have to remove it, but not tonight. So far everything looks good and I just finished running the Steam VR test for s and g's. I'm downloading 3dmark to test next.

Check this out.

So WOW, not even a week and I have to return my RTX 2070 due to artifacts and the fact that every game I try to play crashes... I'm very frustrated with Amazon and this card. Amazon made me jump through hoops to get my free game and now they won't replace my card. They will only refund my money which is fine.. but because they made me purchase my free game and then gave me a refund for the amount... I will get 60 dollars that I can only spend at Amazon warehouse... Either way, I'm a little gun shy on which 2070 to replace it with for the same price of $489.99 usd.

Which system did you put it in ? Iam assuming the MSI X99S

I remember using a workstation board on my son's build and it had a huge cooler which theft the back of the card solder points (no backplate) just a hair away from the metal heat sink, Installed the GFX card in the next lowest slot PCI-E 2 and it didn't work all that well. So I rotated the cooler 90 degrees, freet up the 1st slot and it worked fine. I do notice you manual says "For a single PCIe x16 expansion card installation with optimum performance, using the PCI_E1 slot is recommended." You are using PCI_E6 ... see pages 1-21 and 1-22 of your manual.

Over the last few years I have doing custom loops and it's been a while since I saw a board with switches. So i haven't been in your position Id say for or 8 years. Back in th day before WC, my luck with not using PCI_E1 for single card systems has been sporatic. One board it had switches which allowed you ti turn off a slot and then next one worked fine. Sometimes it worked w/o issue.

If memory serves, the 5820k has 28 PCI lanes available; the table on page 1-21 says that you can use PCI_E6 for a 3rd GFX card in PCI_E6 with a 40 lane CPU in 3 x8 configuration. However, for 28 lanes, it says you have to use PCI_E5.

I'd try and use 1 if you can but if it's a no go what about PCI_E5 ?

Truth if a 1080ti/R7 be had go for that instead, don't hear about artifacting on those or sudden death like on RTX 2000 series...

I tried it on both systems. Like I said it worked fine for 2 days. If the 8x slot was not adequate then it would not have worked for those two days. If anything running it at 8x would only hurt performance, but not by much. That GPU-Z pic was when I first installed it. I had to mod my case to get it in the top spot, but I wasn't going to mod it that night. I couldn't remember if the bottom ran at 16x or 8x, but as the pic shows it was only 8x. I should have said this in my post, but frustrations were high and I've dumped more time than I've had into making this work. lol Thanks for the reply John you have reaffirmed that it's the memory.

Oh and nothing was close to touching it even on the bottom pci-e slot. :toast:

Truth if a 1080ti/R7 be had go for that instead, don't hear about artifacting on those or sudden death like on RTX 2000 series...
I may end up doing that or grabbing a 1660 ti. The only thing I'm worried about is that it uses the same memory, but hopefully they have resolved the issue before they made the 1660 cards. Thanks buddy, I was hoping you would jump on here. :toast:

So WOW, not even a week and I have to return my RTX 2070 due to artifacts and the fact that every game I try to play crashes...
People have blamed AMD for making slow cards which were already "outdated" the moment they were released...
... but at least they WORKED (with small exceptions, like the power delivery thing for first gen Polaris which was fixed later with bios patch). And somewhat cheap as well.

Turding on the other hand is on a complete different level of FAIL.
It's absolutely unreal that after 2 full years of no new card releases, nVidia only came up with this trash. Useless "features" (6 months later 1 single game for the "ray-traced reflections" feature, 1 single game for the "global illumination" feature - which probably are turned off by most people due to the huge performance impact), the almost completely useless DLSS, so many broken cards, lackluster performance that is basically on par with previous generation.
And if that was not enough.... THE PRICES.

What did the engineers do for 2 years ? Watch p0rn and play with their d*cks?

The 1660ti is quite a bit slower:
I'd rather look in the used market for a 1080ti which will offer the best price-performance at this point or a new vega 64 and undervolt it.

Yea, it is much slower, but cheaper a well. I'd grab a vega 64, but they are not that great for VR. @xkm1948 didn't you have all kinds of issues playing VR with your Vega 64?

He had a Fury...it hurt his feelings. My Fury was great and my V64 is even better both @1440. The price drops make it very appealing now. I could actually get a VII for the price I paid for my Vega just 6-8 months ago...

1660 iirc is a cheaper 1070ti, so for product stack recommendations.

Mid range, V56, 1070ti, 1660ti, top V64, 1080, 1080ti, V7.

Cant go wrong in either camp in those card ranges.

The main reason I picked up the 2070 was for the type c usb connection that will be used with newer VR HMD's. I would pick up a 1080 or 1080 ti, but I just can't spend that kind of money on a refurbished card. It seems like the prices have gone up on the 10xx cards since the RTX have been failing. I can't find a 1660 ti with the type c usb connection, but I might pick one up until better cards come along. Just because they are the cheapest atm.

So that makes at least two people I know (@Mindweaver and @trog100) who bought RTX cards that shit the bed. Given the rather small sample size of people who have RTX cards and are also active members of the TPU forums, that kind of failure rate isn't a good sign...

Sorry yours is having problem my 2080Ti is overclocked balls-to-the-wall out of the box and hit with all sorts of workload and still going strong.
Also EVGA’s execellent warranty gives me extra peace of mind.

I just bit the bullet and got a used RTX 2080 that is only described as having some coil whine on full-load, other than that looks pretty much brand new. I'm kind of clenching my butt right now, because these Turing cards don't seem to like running long.

At least it's an EVGA (would be my first). So. Not sure how their support is like in UK.
