Hello techpowerup forum, i'm from colombia so excuse me if my english is a little bad

Yesterday, i bought an XFX RX480 4gb's version that was in a mining rig, the seller told me that the card can mine but can't display any image at all. i was thinking that the bios of the card was bricked and that is what i'm thinking right now, the card has dual bios and switching to one or other the results are the same, the card can't install drivers... when i put the card in the pci slot, the card doesn't give video for any output and if i switch to the onboard, it neither. i need to change the configuration in the mobo to initiate with the onboard graphics instead of the gpu and then i can access to windows. in the device manager, the card shows up as an basic microsoft display adapter with a yellow mark and when i try to install the drivers, the pc freezes and the fans of the card stop spinning...

i tried to flash a fresh bios downloaded from the vga bios collection in the unverified section because the 2 bios available in the verified section are for hynix and samsung memory, my rx has elpida memory so i think flashing those bios will be stupid (a thing that confuses me is when i look in the gpuz the memory, it displays like micron memory) but with all the tries changing with the first or second position of the switch i'm still stuck with the same situation, the gpu can't install the drivers, the pc freezes up and the fans stop spinning... in one of the tries with one of some bios, the gpu tried to install the drivers and the screen goes black, i can move the mouse but the fans stops and that's all.

I tried to flash the bios via cmd in windows. with the command atiflash -i, the gpu shows up and every time that i order to make something, it shows an error message (i'll atach it to the images) and with the -ai command, shows a lot of things that i actually discovered today writing this thread. i tried to flash it with the ATIWinflash.exe and it shows me the gpu as polaris etc etc (see the image) and the other way i tried it is via executable usb in dos mode i think, but in that way, the gpu don't shows up, it says adapter don't found using the -i or -ai command (i use the 4.17 version to access because in other versions, it says that this programm can't run in DOS mode) and i can't continue... the point is, flashing a bios with cmd or the .exe don't give me any results because trying different bios don't let me install the drivers. the only thing that i don't tried is solding or making a bridge between the 1-8 or 1-5 pins in the bios smd located in the back of the pcb

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated and thanks for reading all this!

You need to use -f command(atiflash in cmd) and try to force flash.....but first make sure you get the right bios for your GPU model

i use the -f -p 0 (biosname.rom) and he tries and flash it but when i restart the machine, nothing changes, not sure if the bios is writed but i can't install drivers

Since the wrong bios is on the card We need a physical verification of ram

i managed to buy an eeprom ch341a with the gripper extension to flash directly the card, physicaly the card has elpida memory but gpu z shows micron memory but anyway, i spend all these days downloading and installing different bios on the card with no success, with some bios and with the current installed bios reinstalling it again, i managed up to make the card showing up correctly in device manager as an rx 480 but with an yellow exclamation (error 43), all the bioses that i were using were for elpida memory but with none, i didn't managed up to make the card display video or work correctly... i'll atach the ''stock'' bios that come with the card when i bought it and some of the other bios that i tried

I need the white sticker info from the back of the card.

Please post pictures of those labels.

Take a picture of the pci brackey too.

Sure, i'll give you pics of all the card cuz the sticker is on the back plate, maybe you see something different on the pcb because i'm thinking, maybe, in a physical damage because i see something inflated on the smd's

That board is screwed, it needs a repair.

If you can get your money back I would.

I will try to locate a bios but with the physical damage there is no guarantee any bios will work.

can you explain me why? what 're you seeing in the pcb? because the card was never opened, when i opened the box, the two screws had the warranty seal intact so according to the seller, the card was only used for 45 days or something like that to see the hash rate, in the description the seller says that the card won't display video but it mine perfectly with 26 mh/s (i don't know anything of cryptocurrency)

thats right, searching fot the sku in internet, the card was bough it in best buy, this is the link https://www.bestbuy.com/site/xfx-ha...cklight/5613854.p?skuId=5613854&intl=nosplash and the SKU is 5613854 but, the seller, sent me a different box because the S/N on the model that i have is SCA003952 and the S/N in the box that she sent me is SCA002760

The picture with the red arrow on it shows that chip is damaged it needs to be replaced

Also carefully check the Component marked X ( 3rd down from top ) to me that looks like its blown open.

return Card to seller for full refund ( and if its ebay/paypal " be prepared to open a case with them").

Note if Seller gives full refund without returning the Card you can then look into some one replacing these components in the hope of then reviving a free Card :)

No, the third one just was bad glued i think, xfx prefered to glue that X in the top i don't know why but look in this picture that shows perfectly a strange glue in the middle and i'm from colombia so the card was bought it from a seller from here, i don't know if in the US exist Mercadolibre but i bought it in that page, i opened a claim yesterday and if the seller don't response until march 6, i need to send the card and the support team refund me the money so i won't be able to keep the card and the money except if i send something else replacing the card but if the seller response to the support team that something else arrived but it wasn't the card, they will deduct me the money again

Yeah send that card back, get money back for sure.

I've never seen TIM applied that sloppy from the factory

jejeje, i opened up the card and i replace the thermal paste, that sloppy way is my fault, the stock paste was dried and it was like stone, i just put cheap paste and started to try fixing it

Yeah send that card back, get money back for sure.

okey, while i wait the seller response or the support team deliver's me a guide to send back the card, i will try more bioses in case one of them work, if something new happen, i will post it

Ok I will give you a list of files to try, you may not even need to use the SPI flasher.

Okey but if i need to flash a bios, with atiflash, cmd or in dos mode, the card doesn't show up or actually, the bios flashes but nothing changes, the only way that a bios flash works is with the spi flasher, i'm trying with some modded bios and one stock in a ethereum forum but there's no success...

Heres my directions.
Please follow them

This bios is from the same Line of cards but is from P4JFC6, it should be compatible

This one says P451 V8.3, it may be compatible.

These are others.

Stop. Let me give you directions

Hook your monitor up to the IGP on the motherboard found on the back plate where your keyboard and mouse plug into, could be hdmi, vga, dvi.

Put your dead card in the first pcie 16x slot, you might need to do move to 2nd or 3rd if any available. Plug power wires in.

Download this tool.
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/

Download the very first Bios file.

Follow Directions in the tool when prompted. Restart when told.

If you need more help here are 2 Videos for Further Help, my signature have help links too.

I updated my last post, make sure you use the very first file.

By the way what bios version is on your motherboard?
If it is older than 2013 you will need to update that first due to UEFI on todays cards.
