New card incoming!

I just bit the bullet and got a used RTX 2080 that is only described as having some coil whine on full-load, other than that looks pretty much brand new. I'm kind of clenching my butt right now, because these Turing cards don't seem to like running long.

At least it's an EVGA (would be my first). So. Not sure how their support is like in UK.

I don't think the 2080's have the sudden death issue as the 2080ti's so you should be good. EVGA is also good... The 2080 is a sweet card, my friend just got one and it's been "OMFG, I [insert any daily life activity] faster now because of my 2080!"

The main reason I picked up the 2070 was for the type c usb connection that will be used with newer VR HMD's. I would pick up a 1080 or 1080 ti, but I just can't spend that kind of money on a refurbished card. It seems like the prices have gone up on the 10xx cards since the RTX have been failing. I can't find a 1660 ti with the type c usb connection, but I might pick one up until better cards come along. Just because they are the cheapest atm.

If anything is there probably adapters to go from whatever output to USB type-c

It's going to be the better performer, no doubt. Also, 1660Ti is still Turing arch, you just don't get the RTX stuff.

So that makes at least two people I know (@Mindweaver and @trog100) who bought RTX cards that shit the bed. Given the rather small sample size of people who have RTX cards and are also active members of the TPU forums, that kind of failure rate isn't a good sign...

Both mine are still working. 100 days, 24/7 OC'ed. Just so people doesn't think there are all bad

Hard to say. The 2070 is around 40% faster but it costs a lot more than the 1660 Ti.

If you are planning to game with the card for a few years then grab the 2070. If you are just looking for a card to tide you over until the next round of GPUs then grab the 1660 Ti.

I voted 2070. It's what you wanted originally, and it's going to give you the performance you want. You'd be kicking yourself later on for getting a lessor card, especially in VR...

I vote buy the fastest card you can afford or that you have budgeted for. That way you won't feel as tempted in 12-18 months when the next round of Nvidia cards drop to upgrade again. I'm personally waiting for something that is 50-60% faster than what I have to pull the trigger. Although with Vega 7 being such a disappointment I'm sure Nvidia will milk the 20 series as long as they can.

I tried it on both systems. Like I said it worked fine for 2 days. If the 8x slot was not adequate then it would not have worked for those two days. If anything running it at 8x would only hurt performance, but not by much. That GPU-Z pic was when I first installed it. I had to mod my case to get it in the top spot, but I wasn't going to mod it that night. I couldn't remember if the bottom ran at 16x or 8x, but as the pic shows it was only 8x. I should have said this in my post, but frustrations were high and I've dumped more time than I've had into making this work. lol Thanks for the reply John you have reaffirmed that it's the memory.

I may end up doing that or grabbing a 1660 ti. The only thing I'm worried about is that it uses the same memory, but hopefully they have resolved the issue before they made the 1660 cards. Thanks buddy, I was hoping you would jump on here.

I wasn't much interested in the X8 x16 thing. When looking at that page .... the way i read it... with a 28 lane CPU.... the necessary circuits exist to deliver signals to PCI_E1, PCI_E3,
PCI_E5, and the M.2 SATA Express ports ... the way i read it, if you don't have a 40 lane CPU, there's no signal being sent to PCI_E6

The 1660ti is quite a bit slower:

2060 gives you 13% more performance doesn't seem like a lot looking at the fact that the card requires an investment of 26% more moola. I used the MSI Gaming models to compare. Not that that the 1st number being lower than the 2nd is, to my eyes, a bad thing cause it's a false equivalency. I have always maintained that you don't compare the cost of the card, it's the cost of the system ....a $1200 system w/o card + the MSi Gaming 1660 Ti is $1509 / a $1200 system w/o card + the MSi Gaming 2060 is $1589 ... that's only 5% more cash outta pocket for a 13% performance gain.

Just looking at it from my own perspective. I learned a while ago it's not worth it to buy cheap stuff when what you really need is a quality product. It works out to be cheaper with less hassle and frustration in the long run. That's why when I get around to it I'm upgrading to a Titanium power supply. Sure I can get away with a cheaper Gold (or even Platinum) unit, but I'll be forever cursed knowing I should have gotten the Titanium unit because that's what I wanted in the first place, and now my power supply is a few % less efficient.

Okay so, my 2070 was returned successfully on the 18th. I ordered my new EVGA 2070 Black on the 19th and to my surprise amazon gave me a $60 dollar courtesy credit. I only had to pay $433 for my new 2070, well after taxes $464... but that's still a better deal than my original order. Also, I was given next day delivery, it will be here today. Hopefully, this card last and doesn't have the same memory issues. If so I'll return it and just settle for a 1660 Ti until something better comes along.

Some advice:

EVGA X1 is still kinda buggy for overclocking. I only recommend using it to set the RGB color of your 2070. And yes once set you can uninstall the X1 and it will retain that color.

I highly recommend using Afterburner latest version for OC. Also it is NOT recommended to touch the voltage slider at all.

To OC I recommend using the Afterburner OC Scanner: First set up a custom fan curve (or not). Then just run the OC scanner. After scan is complete you click "apply" immediately to save your new V/F curve. Make sure when using OC scanner, DO NOT touch power or temp limit as OC scanner is meant to run with default power/temp settings. After you get your new V/F curve you can max out your power slider.

After core OC is done you can move onto VRAM OC. Use GPU-Z to check your VRAM maker. Generally if it is Micron I recommend start from +250MHz in afterburner and do not exceed 750MHz. If it is Samsung start from +400MHz and do not exceed +1000.

Good luck playing with your new EVGA card! Make sure to register your card for warranty and free trim kits! I loved the RED trim.

They don't always say what they mean or give the user insight to what the problem might be. The chart says that slot works only with a 40 lane CPU. and there recommendation is to use it for the 3rd GFX card. Doesn't address OPs alternate usage.

Nice, I'll come and join. The card so far has been amazing. I picked up Metro and have been using ray tracing.. All I have to say is WOW! I wasn't a ray tracing believer before, but I am now. Also, VR is so much better now. Now I need Ryzen 3000 to measure up to the hype or I'll go intel when stock is available.

I was partly joking around with you. I don't understand why you keep talking about a 40 lane CPU? I am the OP and I've stated that it worked great for 3 days... I mean it was awesome, but after 3 days I started noticing artifacts and every game that I tried crashed were as for the first 3 days all my games work great with a noticeable difference from my GTX 970. If my system wasn't capable it would not have worked at all. I've already said in the thread that I put it in the top PCIe, but not for the first night. I needed to modify my case a little to get it in the top spot. Plus, I even tried it on my i7 5820k which is a highly capable machine with its 28 lanes. The GPU only uses at most 16 lanes, not 40.

I think you are referring to SLI where I would need 40 lanes to fully take advantage of both cards, which W1zard has already confirmed in the past that 8x works fine on a 16x card. Trust me I tried everything to make the card work because I really liked the card. Also, John, I do appreciate you trying to help me out and you are right that the manual quality could have been better but it was fine and is fine for most TPU members like yourself and me. Oh and to add to it even when I was using the bottom slot the first night, 3dmark ran fine and scored much higher on the bottom slot than my GTX 970 on the top slot. Thanks again!
