Will nVIDIA drop 9xxx series name due to ATi 9xxx series?

I know the nVIDIA 9xxx series is just speculation atm (well so is the 89xx series also LOL) but would giving the new line of cards this name be a bad move?

What I mean is, weve already had the 9xxx series of cards from ATi (ie the 9600/9800) so would the general (non hardcore gamer) public be confused by a new series of cards (very high spec cards) being named practically the same as the old, out of date ATI 9xxx series?

Its just a thought, what do you think?

PS: what else could nVIDIA do to stop any confusion

Since ati 9xxx cards where 3-4 years ago i doubt there will be a mixup...
Besides Gforce 9000 and Radeon 9000 are different...

I can honestly see nVidia using the 9*** in their card's names as being a problem. Especially to someone who is just learning about computers.

Personally, I think they'll just move on to a different naming scheme.

i thing something like the geforce fx series so a consumer can ask for a gforce guadelupi 9800gtx or some thing like this but i thing they gonna skip it or make something like a f force 1xxx




p.s. it might be a luke (use the) force 1000gtx but i thing i will wait for the darth edition

Odds are they will goto a 3digit system for a while. going to the 9000 series would confuse them with very old cards and jumping to 1000 would make them seem last generation. I bet they do a 3x0 sceme or something.

when I see things like "9800Pro" or "9600", I automatically think "ATI". So I think nVidia will use something different. To be honest, I find a lot of these numbers naming schemes confusing. I hope they make something simple. I wouldn't want to see a GF 12345XTX or anything where number of X represents its cool factor.

Btw, there was a Radeon 8500. But I suppose that was so long ago, no one cares there's a GF 8500 series out.

Thats exactly what I meant....to the PC gaming newbie, a cheap ATi 9800XT may seem more appealing then the new, expensive nVIDIA 9800GT

I don't think nvidia cares enough. I mean they are leading the market, and unless DAMNIT has a sucker punch coming up, they probably will for at least another 6 months. To the people would be buying these high end Geforce 9800s, well they would know the difference.

And to even a newbie, they would at least do a little research. Either way, when they try putting an AGP card in their PCIx16 and something goes wrong, they'll figure it out and hit themselves for not looking into it more.

They could use slightly different numbers. 9100, 9300, 9700 etc.

On a different note, I always thought it would be cool if ATI had a Radeon X666.
