If you are going new, rx590 or 580. Or check your local Craigslist ads for a cheap GTX. If you could push budget to 300 then I recommend the gtx 1660ti.

Yes, going new unless I find something locally, which I doubt. Thanks for the info, RX590 is definitely on my short list.

Keep an eye on your local best buy they tend to have decent sales on both those cards as well.

Seem's like even a RX 470 is held back by a 1600T these days I probably wouldn't grab anything much higher than a RX 580.

The RX 570 may be a better match for your CPU unless you plan on upgrading your CPU at some point.

All three of these games stay under 100% gpu utilization most of the time with an 3.7ghz 1600T.

My 1600T is capable of 3.8Ghz but that puts my VRMs into nuclear meltdown mode (only using a 3 + 1 power phase)
So I have it downclocked to 3.5Ghz @ 1.380 vcore and the system is still responsive enough for my needs and gaming.
I have my CPU-NB clocked to 3.0Ghz and I imagine that will help (in part) make up for the lost clock speeds

$150-170 can get you a RX 580, but it'll probs bottleneck with the X6, should be fine for COD and the like

Keep in mind any GPU upgrade is gonna push your CPU a lot harder.

Dunno where you can get a V56 for under $200, even used, and it'll definitly bottleneck with the Phenom. Also, RX 480>290-390X as far less power/heat, and usually within $10 for more perf

With the right GPU I will have this rig for many years to come. Not selling my Phenom II anytime soon.

Plenty of good FPS games I can choose from in the 2013-2017 years: the Phenom II is still a beast.

And as KOS mentioned, If I buy it now, I wont have to later.

If you're thinking of hanging on to the Phenom II for a while, I think the used RX480 compliments the rest of your system well. You sure you can't clock the CPU any further though? Many x6 users ran them closer to 4GHz. When I had one, even I ran it at 3.6GHz with minimal meddling. It was a secondary rig, so I wanted a quick solution without much tweaking...

Recently grabbed a GTX 970 for around $100 and it's been a good card.
Doesn't have to be the top-dog of the line to give good performance as this 970 has shown me - Cheap enough and will compliment that particular system well.

Older, less than top end hardware usually results in fantastic bang for the buck with tempered expectations. Just don't try 120hz 4k with it. It's kinda like comparing how a normal 4 cylinder vehicle can perform when you take it on the freeway, compared to high end sports cars on some race track somewhere.

I do know it's capable of the super-duper-uber virtual resolution "Thing" they have, done it already with the card to confirm.

Thing is you'll probrably be bottlenecking something like a 980 anyway so doesn't make alot of sense to spend the $$ to never get it's full potential.
Even the 970 will be bottlenecked in that system but for less money spent.

Where it would "Top Out" would be the limit for about anything you'd put in it anyway.

-AMD Phenom II 1600T X6 @ 3.5Ghz

Try to remember that your CPU is going to bottleneck most modern GPU's. That's not to say it's a bad CPU, just dated and a bit long in the tooth.

Vega/R7 or RTX cards would be a waste of money for that system. I would recommend an RX480 4GB or 580 4GB/8GB if you swing toward AMD and a GTX770 4GB or GTX1060 6GB if you swing NVidia. The GTX 1660 would be the newest card to go for.

Any of those would perform miles ahead of that 740 you have.

+1 to the above.
It's all about not wasting any $$ on something you'll never see it's real potential from with that system, that's why I sugested a 970 but the above makes good suggestions too. In the case of a 970 there's a ton of them out there and not that expensive to get.
The GTX 1660 would be more expensive since it's a new card - Really up to you on what avenue you take for getting the most for the least spent.

Cheapest 1660 I've seen is going for $219 ATM so you have that to consider vs something not quite as new but again, it's really about what you want.

My first instinct was CPU as well with how cheap Ryzen 1600/2600 can get during sales, but then I read the OP has a 740GT and was like nah he needs a RX 570/580 class GPU

RX580 8GB is definitely on my short list. As far as clocks go: this Phenom II chip is capable of 3.8Ghz but the VRMs get a little toasty at that speed (only 3+1 power phase). I've found 3.5Ghz to be the sweet spot for maintaining both low voltage and decent performance. I can also leave the side cover on while gaming and don't have to worry about temps whatsoever.
