Computer won't post with PCI power connected to video card

This post is on behalf of a friend. He said he woke up and his computer wouldn't turn on. Attempting to start it would result in the fans and lights turning on a split second and then nothing. We eventually narrowed it down to the PCI 6 pin being plugged in to his GTX 960. If you pull the plug it will post and give the typical "please insert a power cable into your video card" screen. We tested my old 5770 in its place and it posted fine. He ordered a 2060 and a new PSU. I originally thought the issue was the power supply so he ordered one. I didn't think a dead video card would prevent a computer from booting completely. He also said the video card gave no warnings of failure. I should note he's had this build at least 6 months.

The video card is a max of 4 years old, it seems too early to just die out of the blue. His PSU is a reliable model, the Antec Edge 550w. Does anyone have any experience on what could have caused this? I guess I'm just a little paranoid that he's going to install his new card and it's going to suffer a similar fate. Could a motherboard cause this? The card was fairly clean so I don't think it overheated but then again I wouldn't know as it's not my system and we don't hang out much.

I had the Same issue with a Radeon 7950. I replaced the card with a GTX 680 and never had any issues afterwards.

I originally thought it to be a psu issue as well but every other gpu I tried worked fine.

Weird, never heard of Antec Edges but a quick Google search gave me a TPU review of a 650W model, which seems to be ok...

I'd say that it's just bad luck. At least a reason to upgrade, heh.

Switch ports on the PSU, switch cables, try card in another machine, if it does the same in another machine the card is trash.

Sometimes mobos go bad too
