Hi guys, I have a question for you. I have a 3x2 set of G.Skill Perfect Storms and a 2x2TridentX ,and a set of OCZ Reapers.. All of these sticks can run 1000 7-9-7-24 on my x58, but will not on my z77, best I can get is 8-9-7-24. I cannot get anything cas 7 or cas 6 to post. But no problem on x58.. I believe the Reapers are PSC, stock is 800 6-8-6-24, and my G.Skills are BBSE 2133 9-9-9-24. I have played with volts a little bit, but nothing too hardcore. Is it possible to run cas 6 or cas 7 with this chipset?

I have tried on and off for about a year, I can say that this board doesn't like the Perfect Storms as much as the Tridents, they will run, but it gets a bit cranky from time to time.

I haven't much tweaked ram on my Z77 but I would recommend using a single type of ram rather than two different makes since they could both cause issues and give you issues like you're having.

Personally if it was me, I'd consider some different ram to replace what you have as if they are all 2Gb sticks(?) and your using up the 4 slots, you've only 8Gb of ram which is ok for basic bits and pieces, but you might be better off with a bit more in there. I run 4 x 4Gbs in my Z77, just running them at stock 1866 with the XMP timings (I couldn't be arsed to be honest with tweaking the RAM, it's not going to give me masses of performance improvements really)

Anything over 2133Mhz on a Z77 is pretty decent but I'd consider some decent timings and maybe 1866 to 2000Mhz maybe to be the sweet spot. Maybe some TridentX stuff or something around the 2133Mhz to 2400Mhz stuff and just play with the timings a little to tweak them might be your best bet as they are 4Gb or 8Gb sticks :)

I've tried just running matched sets, no bites. I would consider buying more ram if I came across a good deal. I did buy some Kingston 2400s, and had a bear of a time getting them to run at stock speeds and timings, which were sloppier than terrible thirds. And in the end, I gained higher read, writes and copies, but took a big hit on latency. So I sold them. I'm content with their performance for now. If I do need more ram in a pinch, I have a 2x4 set of RipjawsX that I can run reliably with my TridentX for 12gb, and the Ripjaws top out at 1866 with 9-10-9-24. Not the greatest, better than a poke in the eye with a dull stick I suppose.

Fug the timings. You want speed with Z77. 2400 is the real sweet spot. 2400 CL9 is what you want to aim for. If you can get that, consider yourself very lucky. If you can get better than that, start gathering money together for a trip to the nearest casino. As you'll be one of the luckiest men on the face of the Earth. If all you can get is 2400 CL10 or CL11 don't feel bad. You're average lucky. Like the rest of us. Excluding myself, as of late. Whom finally nabbed 16GB of Trident X that runs @ 2400 9-10-10-31. :p

I recommend grabbing some Samsung M378B5273DH0-CH9 budget sticks. I've got 2 4x4 kits of that stuff that both do 2400 11-11-11. And perform on par with my Team Xtreem LV 32GB kit @ 2400 10-12-12. With the Trident X only performing slightly better. Basically...pair your 3770K up with something that'll do at least 2400...and you'll be running with the best. Trying to go for the best timings at that point won't account for much. The raw speed, however, will. 2400 or bust. You WILL NOT get better performance with lower speed and tighter timings. And higher than 2400 24/7 stable is impossible on IVB...in my experience anyway. But if you can't get 2400 24/7 stable with your 3770K, it's because your motherboard sucks. Every 3570K(x3) and 3770K(x2) I've had did(and/or does) 2400 24/7 stable on my MSI Z77 motherboards(Z77A-GD55, Z77A-GD65 Gaming, Z77 MPower).

Those TridentX kits you mention @MrGenius are quite a rarity aren't they? I have a few here, 2400 and 2600 speeds I believe.. Even have one boxed which is surprising, mate offered me and couldn't turn that down...

But back on track... Do they do many 8Gb stick or are those 4Gb sticks mainly? I'm only on a 2600k with my Z77 (Asrock OCF board) but never had much luck trying to get that one to run faster ram but that might be the CPU I'm guessing?

@freeagent have a hunt for some newer ram kits I think might be the best option, I'll see if I can find some of the Samsung ram that MrGenius mentions and post up some links if I can... :)

I had loads of problems with ocz ram on sandybridge. Some older Corsair dominator too.

I think early ddr3 just didn't play nice with later imc, as phill said, look for some newer sticks.

I did actually have some issues even running 2200mhz with this board, upon reboot the cpu multi would disappear, only way to get it back was to flash the bios.. Not always, but it happened a few times. Ok, I reckon I will abort this mission. Unless someone has some 2400 c9 or c10 they want to part with :D

Thanks guys. I've got some good info in this thread to use in future searches.

Should not be an issue with manual timings, on a decent board. I might still have a couple of screenshots, let me take a look...

Here is some Perfect Storm @ 2200 7-9-7 on Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH:

Hey thanks for posting buddy. I hadn't tried 7-10-7.. hmm. The guy I bought the G.Skills from a few years ago said he had them all running at 6-9-6 at a good speed that I don't remember on IB-E. I was starting to think it was either my board or my cpu, but could be the operator too..

2200 7-9-7 on z77.. Dam. Everytime I try to post at cas6 or cas7 the screen just stays black.

the board is realy strange in many ways, i played a lot with timings last copple of weeks, if i push CL to much the motherbord just changes the multiplier and i get good low numbers just with awefull multipliers.
so i just run stock at 2400 mhz 10 10 10 31 .
I will retire this Z77 this year, gonna build a Taichi 470.

Hey thanks for posting buddy. I hadn't tried 7-10-7.
Sry that was a typo, timings were 7-9-7 like shown in the screenshot.

Some boards don't play nice with Elpida BBSE and Hyper based kits. Then switching to something PSC based can be a nice workaround for 2000+ 6-9-6, 2200+ 7-10-7 and 2400+ 8-11-8.

Do you have screenshot from your UEFI settings that fail to post?
