Raytracing :Is it necessary to get a Rtx Nvidia card as opossed to a high end gtx card?

I read that Nvidia would be enabling the raytracing feature in old gtx cards, would it be necessary to stay with a high end Gtx card or get a new RTX card?

RT effects in older architecture cards are not so great. If you want the RT experience right now, you really need an RTX, and a high end one at that. That being said, it's still got a long way to go.

I would honestly save all your naira and go with GTX cards instead.... Wait until there is more substance behind RTX and it works more efficiently before you throw down money on something that is at best nothing but a tech demo.... A demo of what it could be if it existed.

Excellent choice sir.

Though there are a few issues... (two of which are fairly exacerbated now)

1. They are in short supply as they havent been in production for a long time.
2. expect to possibly pay a marked up price because of low stock - Supply and demand
3. beware of secondhand cards. Not all cards have been mined on and not all cards that have been mind on are mined to death before being sold on but its still a reason to be a little cautious.

You might be able to pick up a card that has been well looked after and used for nothing but gaming.

I played BFV with DXR on my 1080 and it didn't change my life. So I would say get whatever is cheaper.

Surely if buying a GTX1080ti, you can consider an RTX 2080? Or, if RT isn't relevant, a Radeon VII?

If you can find older identical gtx pascal cards, it might be worth to sli them at this point in time, my 1080 SLI run the rtx demos with reasonable fps @1440p

RTX , i had the use of a 2080 for a few days last week and to tell you the truth im not impressed by it, its different but not a game changer and hasnt the Wow factor like when i first started gaming in VR, maybe when we get a VR game with RT ill think different. same for the 2080 its no better to my old eyes than my 1080 so no plans to upgrade yet.

rtx is a nice feature,especially if we're talking global illumination,but the entry will cost you $1000 no less cause that's what's required to run +60 fps min and 70-80 fps avg. at 1440p.If sb's thinking about doing 1080p RT on 2070 they'd better upgrade the monitor instead.

Where? That's wishful thinking. That amount gets you only an used 1080. An used 1080Ti is in the $550-600 range.

To OP: RTX today is not done well even on the dedicated cards, except the highest end 2080 Ti. That's $1000 for a feature that is used very rarely in games today. And doesn't add that much "wow" factor.

e.g. here in PL a used 1080Ti can be bought much cheaper than e.g. a new 2070.

I'm not saying it's $400,I'm saying it's cheaper than 2070.I mean if every card that sells used is a "mining used card with fans ready to fail, thermal grease baked" then yes.

i got a ex display no box msi aero1080 a few weeks ago for £200 i know its not a TI but theres some cheap cards out there if you dig for them. ive changed the cooler and its sitting at 2100mhz at 57c top with a tiny overclock.

Please dont SLI in 2019, the tech is dead and its a waste of money, unless you only care about synthetic benchmark scores. There's very few games that support SLI anymore and 90% of the time you'll be using once card because the game runs better.

Please dont SLI in 2019, the tech is dead and its a waste of money, unless you only care about synthetic benchmark scores. There's very few games that support SLI anymore and 90% of the time you'll be using once card because the game runs better.

SLI works ok for me, good scaling, I have a backlog of older games as well, and usually there are custom profiles around to support most titles. Plus, do try to game @4k Ultra without sli and tell me the results...

I also have sli'd every GPU from the 7800 gtx up to 980's, eventually abandoning it because of low GPU usage on each card in almost every modern game. If I was driving a 4K panel I would still use a single GPU, Im pushing 3440x1440 @ 100 fps with a 2080. Also to SLI GTX 780's is a complete waste due to the lack of VRAM.
