HGST Ultrastar HE10 10TB - opinions?

Time to buy a new, big hard disk. Always had Seagate (without any problems at all) and one Western Digital Velociraptor that sadly failed - the "nice" guy at PC shop put the new PSU using old cables, and it was fried, but the other five (!) Seagate were all safe.

Now, I've found it at a very good price IMHO of 236€ on Amazon. I read a lot about this, and there seem to be a general consensus about the fact it's very reliable and fast.
I know that is an old model, but I don't care at all. I just want a strong drive that will last for many years.

Opinions?

Ive used nothing but Toshiba drives in the last 10 years and only one out of 10 has died. the drive you picked is an enterprise drive so on paper it should last a long time before it dies. but as always, its a roll of the dice depending you got a duff drive or not. Or just make backups of whatever you put on that drive.

I would love to play with them. I ended up getting 4x 8TB exos drives because I couldnt spring the cost diff for the HGSTs.

Indeed, its normal cost was way over 350€ since few days ago, so my guess is they have to "clean up" the inventory to get new models... but Exos is not bad at all!

my only problem with helio drives "refurbished" or "used" isnt just refurbished drives (which im generally against but have owned a few for non critical stuff) its that I have doubts that they fill them again with helium.

Agree. But the one at 236€ is brand new, while the refurbished one is just like 15€ less, so I guess the latter will stay there for a looong time (forever, probably)

What the ??? pretty sure they don't actually pull the covers off HDD's to refurb them they just run a battery of tests and zero fill n format

There are more than one model and the "Datacenter" one is the better model. To add more to the complexity of the WD model mess they also have WD (ex gold drives).....The price you mention is available all the time in Amazon.de but so are the more expensive models (330+). Beware which one is the 5 year warranty one that is also Datacenter certified. Other than that I have a WD Gold 10Tb (same drives as the Datacenter ones) that I am very happy with for over a year and I run daily image backups on it among other things. I also use it for games and load times are not bad at all.

Why wouldn't they refill them?, the term factory refurbished means re-manufactured by the same factory that made them in the first place, they just check for problems, tidy all up and re-package it.

I use HGST only for laptop and actually i dont have image about 10Tb hdd, but i may skip them 10Tb is a bunch of data and if it died you gonna cry badly, except like you make it in Raid

I should have been more specific. Im talking specifically about the ones that are from third parties. I would probably buy a refurbished one from HGST themselves, I just dont have that kind of trust when it comes too. "NYPCsupply" or w/e.

3RD PARTY REFURBS = GAMBLE FOR GENERAL USE, BIGGER GAMBLE FOR STUFF YOU NO WANNA LOSE

REFURBS FROM MFGR WEBSITE = WAY LESS GAMBLE + SIMILAR/SAME WARRANTY AS NEW FOR A FEW LESS $$, IF IT GOES POO-POO, RMA IT & BE HAPPY !

IN GENERAL, HGST HAS PRETTY GOOD RELIABILITY ON MOST MODELS, BUT YMMV.....

The HGST drives typically do really well on Backblaze HDD reliability reports. They don't seem to have any 10TB HGST drives thou.

Yes, another reason I'm leaning towards them... I think the 10TB should behave as 8TB and 12TB - they should be of the same helium family, if I'm not mistaken.

I used to buy Seagate exclusively and before that it was Maxtor. The Maxtor drives started having failures so I moved to Seagate drives. Then the Seagates started failing early so I switched to WD. I haven't had a single WD drive fail within it's warranty period yet. 10 years and counting but I will be completely honest with you. I think no matter who makes it, hard drives are a roll of the dice. I think some brands give you better odds but the best solution is to always buy two. Meaning if you want or need a 10TB hard drive and you intend to fill it up make sure you buy a 10TB backup drive or some other form of redundancy like a NAS. The more redundancy the better. If maybe you plan to fill the 8 of the 10TB with files that if lost are not a big deal make sure you can backup the 2TBs that matter.
