Ebay motherboards without I/O shield?

I see a mobo that I may want, but there's no IO shield included. What am I supposed to do?

Both of my boards have no i/o shield and work fine. One benefit is vrm's can get cooler cause heat wont build up/get trapped in that area as much.

What about dust though, wouldn't that hurt the system? I mean I could just get a piece of cardboard and cut an io shield for it, but still

Well your gonna clean/blow it out every once in a while anyways. You could make something as well probably with exacto knife and cardboard.

Set up your fans so you have positive pressure and you won't get any dust coming in though the missing I/O shield.

The mobo won't die faster because there's no IO shield. It doesn't change much.

As @newtekie1 said, just create a positive pression inside your case by putting more intake fan then exhaust and you'll be fine.

That whole positive pressure thing is a huge myth. Armchair engineered crap, sounds good on paper, doesn't do any good in the real world.

It's perfectly fine to run without an I/O shield. It doesn't look as nice, but I don't think you're often looking at the back of your computer anyway.

yep I just got a Z390 ASRock Taichi brand new off ebay from legit seller for $130 shipped. should work great, if it turns out to be a scam though which i doubt since its long rep account, etc well ebay will refund me and let me return.

I/O shield needs to be there compared to what many says. They are the conductive quick way for electricity peaks and static to move through the computer case instead of the motherboard itself. That's why there is folding tabs on this I/O shield to touch each connectors on the motherboard I/O diminishing a lot dead motherboard if power supply bust and let out a peak spark of high amp or an overcharge peak from the wall plug itself.

Buy it? My IO shield didnt fit my inwin 303. Been running fine without it. It bothers me alot because I like the "look" but it is what it is. Plate is still in my closet maybe ill write MSI one day.

step 1 Buy Motherboard
step 2 take Motherboard to local Pc repair shop.
step 3 buy old used one that nearly fits from their workshop scrap bin ( and mod it yourself to fit ).

Sorry, but that is incorrect. They have nothing to do with aesthetics. A more applicable name for them would be RFI/EMI shields or cover plates. I/O just describes the location, not the function and it is the function that is important here.

The purpose of those shields is two-fold. (1) To provide a good ground around all the connectors. This is particularly important with "analog" circuits such as audio and "VGA" video since analog is particularly susceptible to interference. And (2), to "shield" the components inside the case from incoming RFI/EMI emanating from other nearby electronic devices (TVs, microwave ovens, radio towers, AC motors, etc.) as well as to prevent any emanations from devices inside your computer case from escaping and causing RFI/EMI on your (or your neighbor's) TV audio and other devices. Okay, (3) - they also are there to help with air flow and dust control too but suppressing interference is their primary function.

So depending on your local RFI/EMI environment, you may need that shielding, or you may not.

As I already said, it depends on your RFI/EMI environment. Point being, your blanket statement, like all blanket statements is wrong. Just because you might not have experienced any problems, that does not mean they don't exist. The mere fact there typically are dozens of those ground tines or fingers on a shield should tell anyone with a little bit of common sense that they are indeed there for a purpose. Otherwise, why would motherboard makers go through the expense of making the shields out of metal instead of cheap plastics and design the press punches to cut in all those grounding fingers?

I've run several miners without IO shields or even cases but they are hardly a good stability use case. Still, they worked.

Yes, it does quite a bit of good as long as your intakes are filtered. I've been using it for years, even with computers sitting on carpet with 3 dogs in the house, and almost never have to clean out my computers.

I agree 100%. It is not myth at all. You want a little positive pressure so you can control the air flow - as newtekies1 suggests, preferably through air filters. If you have negative pressure - even a tiny bit - air (and the dust, dander, hair, etc. it carries) will get sucked in through every little hole, slit, port, and crack. In fact, this is probably the leading cause for optical drive lenses to get dusty.

If it didn't do you any good, you set it up wrong. You want more air being pulled in (through your filters) than is being exhausted out. Just a little is fine. Too much and you can have stagnant areas where heat can build up.
