PC Deidicated For VR Gaming

So I’m new to the whole VR world, I kinda dipped into it a little back when oculus was first announced years ago but never tried again. Now I want to build a dedicated rig just for VR gaming and VR movies. What would I be looking at in terms of specs. Is the processor important or the GPU more important ? I got to software will be SteamVR on top of Windows 10

I think the GPU will be the most important as you are going to be driving approximately a 2880 x 1600 monitor. You will also want a cpu that drive high refresh rates - probably means a ryzen 3000 series or something from intel.

Well I had 2 HD 7950s in crossfire paired with a Fx 8320 and that played VR no problem. I then went with a 480 and 470 and the performance was good. I would say that you will need at least a Vega 56 from AMD or a 2060 from Nvidia to play VR well with a single card. The other thing is that a 6 core CPU might satisfy the requirements too.

AMD GPUs have relative poor VR supoort. I had a FuryX with HTC Vive, there were tons of little problems along the way. I would advise against buying AMD GPU for VR.

For CPU you want good single thread performance with at least 6 cores. A 8700K or 2600X would do just fine. RyZen 3000 would be even better considering recent Intel security patches negatively impact performance.

For GPU choice I would recommend going for RTX 2080. In VR super sampling can increase your grpahic experience greatly. Cranking up SS in VR requires quite a lot of horse power so you would want as much GPU force as you can afford.

For VR HMD itself I would recommend Valve Index, if you want to go high end. That will allow you to enjoy AAA VR games greatly: Like Talos Principle VR, Fallout4 VR and etc. For entry level I would recommend Samsung Oddesy+ Windows Mixed Reality HMD. It has great screen.

I ran my oculus on an i5 4690 and a gtx 970. Performance was indiscernible from my Ryzen 2600 and GTX 980Ti. Neither ever dropped any frames that were visible in the headset. With asynchronous timewarp on both oculus and vive, you won't ever notice a difference. If you want to enable super-sampling and get some crisper visuals, adjust your graphics card upwards accordingly. But VR is perfectly attainable at what would be considered "low-medium" specs.

I have used an Rx480 and 580 plus a vega 64 on an oculus, had no issues but an R9 290 ,i dunno.

Its via an HTC VIVE (non-pro)

It runs windows 10 home. The drive is a 250gb samsung 970 evo

This is my dedicated VR build. Was pretty cheap and it runs fine.

Latency is the No.1 enemy of VR, pretty sure Crossfire wont help in VR applications.

Get a single powerful GPU.

Oh and BTW AMD does not provide any SteamVR feature support on R9 GPUs. Talking about Async Reprojection and TimeWarp

99% of VR games do not work with SLI/crossfire. Do not depend on them for VR.

I was not aware of what @xkm1948 said about R9 GPUs. However, if that is true (and I have no reason to disbelieve him) then do not go for an R9 GPU. You will 100% want something that supports asynchronous projection/timewarp.

I'm not sure how well you'll be able to share the gpu sources and what features will be available to the vms.

When I had VR setup it was with Steam I set the crossfire setting to 1x1 in AMD Settings. Running the Steam benchmark gave me 120 FPS in the VR test. Playing any game; Subnautica, Everspace, Project cars, Titans of Space or even Serious Sam VR were all butter smooth. Occulus games ran no problem either.

Yeah IDK about that, you cant even do remoteFX anymore officially, would need to do something like DDA but even then your talking about remote machines in hyper-V.

I agree, GPU shuld be your primary consideration. You might want to consider looking for graphics card tiers to know what they are best used for.

I currently use a Ryzen 5 1600 @ 4Ghz with a RX 580 8GB as a dedicated VR PC in my living room, works perfect. I wanted to use a Gaming X 1060 6GB but it only had one HDMI output.
