I know the person and CPU, it's one month old and never been OC. He's offering it to me for $45 below what a new 8700k costs. This would be replacing an 8600k and my mobo supports the 9700k (already running the latest BIOS). I'm not upgrading my GPU (gtx 1660ti) or monitor (Dell IPS 27" 1080p 75hz) for at least another two years (probably longer on the monitor).

PROs -
great price and two more cores
don't need to worry about peaking over to the Ryzen 3 yard and see what's going on

Con -
no HT
8600k already does everything I need

I made my choice, curious as to what other people would decide.

$45 below 8700k it's definitely worth it.Pushing 75 fps may be a demanding task for a cpu in some games.

Ryzen 3 3000 is still 4c/8t on 12nm,not 6c on 7nm.

The hell does a Ryzen APU have to do with his question? Last I checked 2400G is $140 and 8700K is $365. That means that AMD's alternative from a similar price range will soon be 8C/16T unit on 7 nm with a claimed 65W TDP, not a 4C/8T on 12 nm.

The Price seems really tempting but I would only go for it if I had money in the pocket burning a hole. Just my 2 cents.

I would buy it and sell the 8600K to make back some of the cost. You might be able to get $225 for the 8600K.

If it's a gaming rig, frankly I wouldn't consider it worth the T & E ... especially @ 1080p where the gain is about 3.5%

As an 8 core, it's going to hold its value and stay relevant for longer, so as a long term investment including consideration of the future divestiture price being better than a 6 core, it is a good move. Right now he can sell the 8600K for nearly the same price as a new 8600/9600 on eBay and just lose a little on the 10% fee. i7s usually hold close to their original value for a long time on eBay compared to i5s.

Agree with your point but the 9700k is an 8 core part with no HT and he can get it for less than an 8700k. Thing is if he does not go for it he wont get the Ryzen 3 in any case as he said he is happy with his 8600k.

I'd go for the 9700k if you can get it that cheap. The two extra cores with no HT is probably better in 90% of cases than the 6C12T 8700k. Plus they're both overclockable so not a bad offer really.

I checked ebay, it goes for $170-180 used plus ebays cut. Basically the net would cover half the price.

I am happy with it but I have no allegiance to Intel. If for some reason Ryzen 3 3600x was this decades i5-2500k then I would seriously look into a new platform assuming the cost of the switch was reasonable (about the same price as the i7-9700k).

When I look at eBay sold listings, I see 8600K in $220 range as Buy It Now, besides the random fools that run auction and only end up selling at $180.

I saw that listing as well but when you log into ebay and go through the sales set up it tells you what the product typically sells for.

I just now realized he meant 3000 as 3.

yes you are correct, my apologies for not making that clear

not worth if 8600k is gonna cover half of it.simple.
my 5775c is about the same perf as 8600k, and only way I would sell it and then double is for 9900k.Would not do it for 9700k or 8700k.

I'd keep the money in my pocket to upgrade another component that would give more benefit, further down the line.

I would do it..... The 9700k is gonna last you much longer than the 8600k for gaming workloads. Your 8600k is likely worth more now than it will ever be worth as well making the cost difference easier to justify as you're likely getting 33% more cores for 180$.

So less than the price of a 3600 you're likely getting a CPU that is faster without having to tear down your whole system.

I've been really happy with the performance of the 9900k and a 9700k for gaming isn't a ton different..... You obviously won't notice any difference in average FPS but it will help minimums and also with games like Cyberpunk next year and other cpu demanding games frame time consistency even on a 1660 ti will likely be better.

How much that is all worth it to you only you can answer though.

not really.8700k is a better cpu overall.

I was looking at benchmarks across many sites and the "9700k outmatches" it in quite a lot of games, and also at several renering type benchmarks, also includeing PC Mark 10 - If buying new then I'd get the 8700k as the 9700K doesn't justify it's extra price for a ~10-15% increase in games and a slight bit more in syntetics but if it was cheap enough and I could flog the 8700k to cover most of the difference I wouldn't be disappointed.

Still both great chips though.

I'd go for the 9700k if you can get it that cheap. The two extra cores with no HT is probably better in 90% of cases than the 6C12T 8700k. Plus they're both overclockable so not a bad offer really.

In fact there is little to no evidence of real world use cases that put the 8C above the 6C12T and a lot is attributable to higher clocks, that you can easily hit on the 8700K as well (remember 8700K drops to 4.3 all core turbo at stock!), which will put the latter at same or better perf. These are the exact same CPUs under the hood, all you get is a core/thread difference. There is an advantage over the 8600K, yes. But... does it matter? Buying an older (and not even top of the stack) CPU to be more 'future proof' also reeks of twisted logic. This to me looks like an exercise in futility, a sidegrade at best - and complaints about Intel hardware security only to replace an Intel with an Intel CPU is... well :p

Also wrt financials, OP has a 8600K - not 8700K - and therefore will most definitely not recoup the 9700K sale price by selling it. The end result is a very expensive 9700K, late in the 'cycle' with much better alternatives about to release. Ryzen is about to drop, the value of a 9700K will plummet in 3...2...1...

Given the other specs of the PC, I bet the only difference noticeable with this purchase would be pure placebo effect. An 8600K is still a great gaming CPU, and despite the higher clocks of the 9700K few games are realistically CPU-limited in a way that would make this noticeable.

Save your money for a later upgrade that you'll actually notice.
