I just noticed that my Radeon VII runs PCIe x 4.0 on my x570 chipset, in bios my board a Gigabyte Aorus Master is set at auto. The settings is shown in AMD driver overview

CPU is the X3800

OS win 10 pro 1903

Any one else noticed that?

129108

GPU Z shows it as PCIe x 3.0

129110

and so do HWinfo64? Strange?

His point is Amd software says 4.0.
Everything else is saying he's at 3.0.
Radeon VII is not supposed to support pciex 4?

System Supported vs Active

Same thing happens when putting an old 2.0 videocard into a 3.0 system... it says that 3.0 is supported but 2.0 is currently active.

/thread.

p.s. - and no, Vega doesn't know 4.0...

I have a 3rd gen i7 (3770k) and my Radeon VII is now also reporting PCIe 4.0 support. It's therefore definitely not the "system supported" version as Wavetrex suggests. Maybe they've just switched it on?

"Vega 20" technically supports PCIe gen 4.0, on its Radeon Pro and Instinct products, but AMD capped PCIe to gen 3.0 on Radeon VII. Maybe it did a shoddy job capping PCIe on some cards. All RVII cards are MBA.

Do a bandwidth speed test and you'll know for sure ;)

Taking proper precautions of course, what if one would flash this card's VBIOS with Pro's version, which does support 4.0? It may be a restriction done purely in vbios.

Planning an upgrade to Ryzen 3000 next month so I'll try a bandwidth test then.

I flashed the UEFI bios that has since been taken down by AMD. Maybe they accidentally unlocked it?

Okay, so we tested Radeon VII on an X570 motherboard and the latest driver. WattMan indeed reports PCIe mode as gen 4.0.

However, the speed doesn't physically apply. 3DMark PCIe test numbers are 14.26 GB/s for gen 4.0 and 14.27 GB/s for gen 3.0 (no change).

So it's probably a driver bug. PCIe gen 4.0 support is physically "fused" on Radeon VII. Radeon Instinct and Radeon Pro cards based on this chip support gen 4.0.

PCI-E 4.0 is not important for graphic card performance at the moment.
But it's serious advantage compare to Intel for performance of OS, write, read and copy with new Gen 4.0 NVMe M.2.
