1st gaming laptop, ~2k usd

Hi Everyone, long lurker of the site mostly interested in articles here. Ive been a PC gamer since the early 90s (man that makes me feel like a dinosaur) and always used desktop self custom built computers.

Im wanting to be able to game from the couch and want to buy my 1st gaming laptop. The most i want to spend is around $2000 usd with taxes in mind. I may could be persuaded through a couple hundred more at it but prefer 2k or under.

My current PCs specs is an i5-6600k (not overclocked), 16gb ram, 128gb very old SSD, around 12TB of storage on 3 HDDs, and 1050ti. Display for the past 10 years or so has been a 50in 1080p TV and now a 70in 1080p TV

I would like the laptop to beat the snot out of that rig for gaming. Laptop requirements: More than 1TB of HDD storage isnt needed and 256gb or 512gb SSD should be ok. 16gb of ram should be fine. Battery life is irrelevant. Ive never played on any system ever that exceeded 1080p resolution or 60fps. Practically EVERY gaming laptop ive looked at so far offers a 1080p 144hz display some with gsync, some without gsync. A few with higher refresh rates. 1440p resolution seems extremely rare and 4k displays lack high refresh rates. There are also 15in and 17in systems to choose from.

Im not very up to date on laptop processors but i figure an 8th or 9th gen i7. I am something of an AMD ryzen fan but they appear very rare from my searches and Ive found nothing higher than i think an RX580 gpu.

I "think" id prefer a 17in model with atleast a rtx2070. I care absolutley nothing about how the laptop looks. LEDs, other lighting, chassis shape are at zero priority.

With all that in mind and my searches i think i like the HP Omen 17in. Its 17in 1080p 144hz gsync system with an i7-9750, 16gb ram, rtx2070. Link below

My searches dont show many reviews at all for it but it looks to fit my criteria and is right at $1630

Im interested in remarks on that system and if anyone has better suggestions.

Razer appears more expensive for less in specs. ~$2500 for a 17in with a 2060. Reasoning?

Just thinking outside the box here, when you say "game from the couch", you could use a desktop PC connected to the TV right? That would save a lot of money and headache.

Get a Razer Blade RTX 2060/2070 or any 2070 laptop.
Never buy any Razer, they are junk and overheat. Plus any Razer laptop is over the OP's budget.

Why not just upgrade your graphics card, get a wireless keyboard/mouth and game on the big TV from the couch.

to point but only to a point.. you have paid over the odds in two ways.. first the 2070 240hz and second the razor brand name..

what you have is very nice but not exactly good value for money.. unlike my asus rog scar 1070 120hz 17 inch machine which is nice enough and cost me half as much as your machine would have.. :)

but each to his own.. i did set out to get something good but at minimal cost you quite clearly didnt .. buying new but last generation saved me ÂŁ600 quid.. okay i dont get ray tracing and 240hz but on a laptop are they of much use.. personally i dont think so..

It cost half as much, with 60% of the performance and a screen that's half the refresh rate in a case made of plastic.

What you pay is what you get.

my machine cost me ÂŁ1380 what did yours cost.. i should not have used brands names in my earlier comment.. my main point was buying last generation can save a lot of money..

assuming saving money counts.. it dosnt always.. some laptops can cost well over 3 or 4 grand..

laptops vary massively in price and value.. more so that most things.. priorities have to be carefully worked out..

i have done a fair amount of laptop looking recently.. my conclusions are basically budget 1060 or similar later generation gaming machines are reasonable value for money and make sense.. higher end gaming machines are over priced and dont make much sense..

my youngest son just bought a 9900k cpu 2080 gpu clevo chassis machine.. its huge as powerful as it gets and cost ÂŁ2300.. cheap for whats inside it but maybe a tad over the top..

wanting "power" but not spending any more than he had to to get it was quite clearly his priority.. for his priority he got it spot on..

Hmm thats actually a pretty decent idea. My desktop is gen 6 skylake i5 however and doesnt have thunderbolt which i believe is typical for that connection. They started that with gen 7 kaby lake iirc. We do use my PC for all our media entertainment, but it is plenty fast enough for streaming and I don't intend to upgrade it for quite awhile.

Just thinking outside the box here, when you say "game from the couch", you could use a desktop PC connected to the TV right? That would save a lot of money and headache.
Why not just upgrade your graphics card, get a wireless keyboard/mouth and game on the big TV from the couch.
That is precisely what ive done for 10yrs or so. Couch gaming with my PC on my TV. Since i got married 5yrs or so ago though, that doesnt work so well when all the wife wants to do is watch tv.

I dont want a computer on an actual desk with monitor. Its the necessary computer chair that i abhor. I have some bad back pain and im a firmware engineer sitting in an office chair all day already. Laying back on the recliner helps the back to relax.

I am like you, I tend to buy laptops at the end of the current generation life cycle or last gen. I had a laptop with a 1070 for over 1.5 years. My current one is a different story.
I dont see any difference between 120 or 144hz and 240hz screens. I tested out a aero 15 laptop with a 240hz panel and it looked like 120hz on my old laptop. I tested both laptops side to side.

I've never liked laptops as desktop replacements. As a side-machine (is that even a thing?) they're fine but since they're mostly all-in-one solutions there's just too much variable aside from the specs and pricing. Display quality, connectivity options, keyboard feeling, trackpad quality, battery life, cooling performance, dual channel memory support and the worst of all: OEM-specific CPU power ceiling and boost frequency spec. Then there's the company-specific RMA support.
It's all just a mess. Just watch some Youtube reviews on it. As much as meme it has become LinusTechTips does good gaming laptop reviews. Linus even re-chose a Razer Blade recently after testing out others. HardwareCanucks also does laptop reviews. Idk others by name since I don't specifically watch anybody for laptop reviews.

Some people need a laptop for certain things, I need one because I can be away from home for weeks. And now that I am downsizing my life to fit in a very small area, i might even downsize to a 15in laptop.

I'm not criticising anybody for choosing laptop actually. I understand the needs. It's just never been an elegant solution imo.

Personally if I were in similar situation, I'd just go for a very small ITX route. A small slim case like dancase or sth, 60% wireless keyboard and wireless mouse should take as much luggage space as some of those desktop-replacement laptops and their power brick(s).
Although productivity during travel takes a hit in that case since a display and wall outlet is needed.
But then again it's just my personal opinion. Powerful laptops have their niche. Like a few years ago people were using gaming laptops to finally experience tether-free (somewhat) VR. Now though people are just waiting for WiDi modules.

That 2070 in your razor laptop is a max q design, which means it performs like a 1070.
