Well, I finally made the switch back to AMD, so I thought I would post a couple of pics of the rig, and a little story about my "boost controversy" experience. Here is the rig, in all her glory:

Submission 2.jpg

Submission 1.jpg

Submission 3.jpg

So, first of all, the build experience was absolutely flawless. The GSkill Trident Z Neo RAM booted first time after setting it to default settings, with the advertised speed and timings (and ran even better once the I used the Ryzen RAM Calculator and plugged in those timings). Got the OS installed, all the current BIOS and drivers, and noticed, like everyone else, that my boost speeds were not as advertised...not even close.

So after some toying around, I knew my chip could do 4.4Ghz, all cores at a slim 1.31v, but was still struggling to get to a 4.5Ghz single core boost on any of the cores even when the motherboard fed it 1.48v. Again, reset optimized defaults, toyed with different settings, and was STILL coming up at a loss.

Then I did this...Set optimized defaults, manually set up the RAM timings, as the the calculator, then instead of leaving the "Performance Enhancer" in the BIOS to "Auto", I set it instead to "Default". I assumed this was the same thing, but discovered it apparently is not.
20190908_102853.jpg

Then I changed the Precision Boost Overdrive to "Disabled" instead of "Auto"...again, I assumed this was the same thing, but apparently it was not. After trying tons of things, and various different setting, those two settings all the sudden made ALL of my cores boost to the advertised 4.5Ghz at various times, but also allowed 2 of my cores to boost 100-165Mhz over the advertised boost.

Annotation 2019-09-08 102307.png

I do not know if this will fix the boost issue for anyone else, but it appears these two setting when left as they are out of the box, alter the boost frequency or behavior in some manner. AS SOON as these were changed, I noticed most of the cores boosting to their advertised speeds or better.

Anyone else with an Asus motherboard and Ryzen 3000 want to give this a shot and see if it works?

It looks awesome! Congrats on new build.

Personally all i want to know if you are having unexpected freezes (especially in idle/low load), blackscreen reboots with this setup? This is something what doesn't show up instantly but happens in some ryzen configurations and it is unfortunately pretty common.

Interesting.

Can you test performance bias settings too? I noticed these had a positive impact on my Ryzen 1 systems (made games feel smoother at high fps). Looks like they left those in there. Never could figure out what exactly they did. A performance bias to Cinebench 11.5 gave me the best results.

Great system btw!

No freezes at all. I have noticed a weird black screen flicker randomly when watching videos and moving the mouse. I am not sure if it is related to the last NVidia driver update or the new platform.

Interesting.

I can unquestionably tell you that I get MUCH better multi-threaded scores manually clocking the cores to 4.4Ghz @ 1.31v. I do this for any rendering or multi-threaded work. On game benchmarks, I have noticed letting the CPU do its thing on auto yields marginally better results than all core overclocking, with PBO off and the Performance Enhancer at default. I have yet to see any of the cores, when running a single core test, reach the advertised clocks for a sustained duration. It seems to be very random, and only goes over the advertised clocks when I am not looking at it.

I haven't played with the performance bias at all, but will have to give it a whirl now that I seem to be boosting correctly.

Really diggin' the Punisher theme! Nice system build.
Keep up the OC work. Your biggest gains past 4.4ghz is the memory tweaking.

Yeah, I have a pair of 8 year old twins that gave me the white stickers. When I was covering the SSDs, I found the black skulls and put them on, along with the white stickers in the case. My kids loved it.

@ JATownes
This rig looks fantastic !!!!!!!!

And thanks for the info.
I have a 3700x on an Asus ROG Strix B450-F and I am just starting to play with it so I will see if I have a Default option in my Performance Enhancer settings.
Right now I have PBO on and PE set to Level 3 OC.
So far I have seen 5 cores hit 4.375 Ghz. 1 at 4.325, 1 at 4.3 and one at 4.275 GHZ on R15 and R20 single core runs.
But they were all hitting 4.25 and 4.275 GHz on a few R15 and R20 multi core runs.

Might get some tighter timings running 2T. Possibly higher mem clocks with loose timings ;)

Awesome rig. What temperatures are you getting with that cooling setup? I am jealous of your golden chip too.

I will also try the following like you did.
  • Boost Overdrive to "Disabled"
  • "Performance Enhancer" to "Disabled"
I am not sure I even have a performance enhancer setting but I will check.

I actually have two extras sitting in a box. The original plan was a triple 360 rad setup (D5, Singularity top/res combo, EK Velocity block), but I did not realize how low MB tray set in the Lian Li Dynamic, so the last rad will not fit in the bottom with the vert GPU, and the pump/res will not fit on the side rad mount, as it is not wide enough with the GPU sticking out. I have my entire loop sitting here in boxes waiting for the XL version to be delivered at the end of of the month, then waiting until next month for a RTX 2080ti and EK Vector block.

Awesome rig. What temperatures are you getting with that cooling setup? I am jealous of your golden chip too.

Temps are decent with the AIO in push/pull. Mid to high 70s under stress.

Just got confirmation that Newegg has shipped my new 011-Dynamic XL today! I originally had been informed it would not ship until the 25th of September, so basically a week earlier that I had anticipated. So now it looks like I'll finally be able to put my new loop together this weekend.

Just wanted to share my excitement that something I pre-ordered actually shipped earlier than expected...that never happens to me!

I'm still pissed that I bought a Corsair Air 740 last year and not that LiLi case. Probably still going to switch some day.
