Today, AMD announced the Radeon RX 5500 series graphics products, harnessing groundbreaking RDNA gaming architecture to deliver the ultimate in high-performance, high-fidelity 1080p gaming. The AMD Radeon RX 5500 series includes the Radeon RX 5500 graphics card that will be available in desktop PCs from leading manufacturers and graphics cards from board partners, as well as the Radeon RX 5500M GPU for notebook PCs. Top system providers worldwide are embracing the new products, with HP and Lenovo planning to offer Radeon RX 5500 graphics cards in their high performance desktop gaming PCs beginning this November, and Acer planning to offer systems with the cards beginning this December. In addition, later this month MSI is expected to launch the world's first gaming notebook powered by AMD Ryzen processors and Radeon RX 5500M GPUs.

Are you crazy? I'm guessing we will see this MSRP in the $199-$249 range. It's an RX580 replacement and should sell for RX580 MSRP roughly.

EDIT: After some digging it looks like these might go even cheaper potentially down to $149.

This is AMD not Nvidia!

RTX2060 costs about 200 dollar too much and instead of making those prices drop, the RX5700XT just matches it....

I like the size of this card a lot, having an option of a lower power single slot half height model card would be awesome for office OEM PCs.

And...MSI launching an AMD laptop?! :eek:

Things must REALLY not be rosy with Intel if MSI is actually testing a laptop offering with AMD.

So AMD has made a RX580 replacement that cost what a 580 used to cost and performs the same as a RX580 and pulls the power of a RX580 (note the 5500 in the picture has an 8 pin connector - unencessary on a card that pulls under 150 watts). WCCF tech claims it has a "110TDP/150TBP" design, which if true, is a whopping 14 watts lower then a stock RX480, and slightly higher then a XFX 480 GTR black. Not impressive for 7nm navi.

Woooo? So much advancement....I think? I mean, go look at the 1650 benchmarks from when it came out. Take note of where the RX570 and RX580 are at. This new RX5500 isnt any faster. Poeple complain about nvidia all the time, but AMD seems to be very comfortable not moving an inch from where polaris once stood, and if this is the best they can shrink Navi down to, big navi doesnt look so rosy anymore.

That isnt exactly unusual. MSI has made AMD gaming laptops, the FX line, for many years. They even made them with bulldozer APUs and AMD dGPUs!

An interesting little card, but it all comes down to pricing. If 5700 series is any indicator, it'll not be as cheap as people wish.
They compare it to a 1650, but it's much faster on average. The performance slots it between RX590 and GTX1660. The price will most likely be there as well.
It would be amazing if they price it at ~$160, don't get me wrong, but I'm skeptical at the moment.

This is not a 580 replacement.
This would be a replacement for a hypothetical AMD card sitting between RX460 and RX470 in terms of performance (a 1050Ti slots around there).

AMD also claims that typical board power for vega 64 is 295 watt. users know that the cards typically draw over 300, and peak close to 400 watts, and that's before OC ing at all. The RX580 was horribly inneficient, it was a 480 with more volts. The 480 only drew 160-170, and it could be brought down to under 150 with undervolting.

If the 5500 is a 110 watt card, why, pray tell, does it need an 8 pin connector? That suggests it isnt anywhere close to 110 watts. Anandtech was told during press breifing that the card would be 150 watt, now they've changed their slides to say 110 watt. I'd guess AMD didnt get a very good reception to those numbers and is fudging something.

If AMD is comparing these cards with GTX 1650, they must be around $150~$160. It wouldn´t make sense to compare them to 1650 if they were $200~$250 cards.

110W is actually more than I expected. 1660/ti is 120W tdp card. Not that it means a lot on desktop side, but on laptops this might push cooling designs more like found on a gtx1660 series rather than 1650s. And yeah gtx1650 holds is niche for pcie slot powered card.

This is no longer the case with Navi. Check out the latest techpowerup review:


Peak 5700 power is 183 W which is inline with 185 W from AMD. Peak 5700 XT power is 223 W which is inline with 225 W from AMD. Average power is slightly lower so I expect the 5500 to be around 100 W average and 110 W peak. Expectations must be reset with Navi and 7 nm. The previous info on Vega and Polaris power usage is no longer valid.

Edit: And you are right about Vega and Polaris being higher than what AMD advertised. Techpowerup finds the peak 580 power to be 219 W from that same review linked above. Now that this is no longer the case for Navi, then the 5500 is exactly half the power of the 580.

I think it will also matter a lot to desktop users. The buyers of these cards are working within strict budgets, if not upgrading office machines with GPUs. Power supplies are going to be limited in this space, low power is somewhat more important then enthusiasts with 1kW PSUs and enough cooling to satisfy a muscle car.

Instead of speculating, why not wait for benchmarks to come out then debate about performance (real) vs hypothetical.

I would expect the entry level (RTX2060) gaming card to cost 200 - 250 dollars/euro.
The mid level (RTX2070) card to be about 350 - 400 - 450.
The high level (RTX2080) card to be about 600 dollar.

The ultra high end (RTX2080Ti) card to be about 750 dollar.

ya know.... like it used to be before the rediculous price jumps.

You are stretching term entry level there...

Entry x30 ~ sub $100(Not really gaming card)

Nvidia's usual msrp ranges for Gaming cards:
  • Low end x50/ti ~$100 - $150
  • Midrange x60/ti ~$200 - $299
  • High end x70/x80 ~$330 - $600
  • Enthusiast x80ti ~ $650 - $750
So by the pricing current Turing stack up:
  • Low end: gtx1650 $149
  • Midrange: gtx1660 $219, gtx1660ti $279
  • Highend: RTX2060/S $350/$399, RTX2070/S $599/$499
  • Enthusiast: RTX 2080/S $699/$699
  • Titan class: RTX 2080 ti $999/$1299

Ok, so....the information on previous card's "optimistic" power ratings is no longer valid because the 5700xt sits closer to its TDP? So did the 7970/280x/380. And why does the 5500 have an 8 pin connector for 110 watt? That's pretty extreme, and a bit odd, isnt it?

The 1660/1660Ti ship with 8-pin power connectors as well and only consume between 110-120 W for standard clocks. The number of pins on the power connector no longer match the TDP.

Entry x30 ~ sub $100(Not really gaming card)

Nvidia's usual msrp ranges for Gaming cards:
  • Low end x50/ti ~$100 - $150
  • Midrange x60/ti ~$200 - $299
  • High end x70/x80 ~$330 - $600
  • Enthusiast x80ti ~ $650 - $750
So by the pricing current Turing stack up:
  • Low end: gtx1650 $149
  • Midrange: gtx1660 $219, gtx1660ti $279
  • Highend: RTX2060/S $350/$399, RTX2070/S $599/$499
  • Enthusiast: RTX 2080/S $699/$699
  • Titan class: RTX 2080 ti $999/$1299
Except actual Titans exists and those are now priced at thousands of dollars.
Saying the 2080ti is a Titan class card is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while.
It doesn't have any of the software features and support the Titans get, it is a very expensive enthusaist gaming card and that is all it is.

The 1660/1660Ti ship with 8-pin power connectors as well and only consume between 110-120 W for standard clocks. The number of pins on the power connector no longer match the TDP.

To be honest that never had. AMD learnt they lesson on RX 480 power connector debacle.

Except actual Titans exists and those now are priced at thousands of dollars.
Saying the 2080ti is a Titan class card is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while.

Pricing is Titan class not the card itself.
