Hi! I don't post here often, so I'll try my best to adhere to expected forum conventions. If this is the wrong section/sub-forum for this thread, please let me know. I'll keep this short.

I'm currently building a virtualisation server, using a pair of nVIDIA Tesla K10's (by modding them into GRID K2's) in ESXi. However, I was looking around a bit and saw the Tesla K80's. Can those be used as vGPUs under ESXi? Is there a way to use them for graphical acceleration (or tasks outside of raw compute), or are the K80's unable to be used like the K10's? I haven't bought the K80's, due to the fact that I have nothing supporting s purchase of them yet. The K10's, however, are already in my possession (and will be modded soon). If there are any users of the Tesla K80's out there, your input is needed here. I want to know what they can and can't do (along with maybe some metrics on relative performance).

I have a Tesla K80.
But I only have Windows Server 2016.
I can install VMware and run a virtual machine on it.
if you want you can do this and check your assumption.

I have a few questions:
  1. Is the GPU being used as the primary GPU (to render what is on-screen)?
  2. Can the GPU be used with remote access solutions like Moonlight and the likes?
  3. How does it perform in 3D Mark and other benchmarks? Compared to other common GPUs?
I know some of these questions seem a bit unnecessary/redundant, but I haven't been able to catch much footage of it in action. Just trying to gauge how far I could get with it in my upcoming server project.

Not gonna lie - that video got published just days after I started considering the K10's. That video convinced me to buy them faster :D So definitely a stroke of luck with the timing.

Okay - I'll be back in a few months, once I figure out if I can source one...

I'm back. Might be getting a job soon. Hopefully I can grab a K80 to experiment with in my next server.

Saw this recently. Wondering if this applies to the K10's I currently have...

I'll be able to test a few of my theories soon enough, once I get my server. Just waiting for a particular, international setback to blow over. On a side note, just got a new job - which means I could start saving up for a few K80's in due time :D

Looks like I'm one step closer to playing around with some Tesla K80's. I managed to finally source a server that can actually house (and power) the GPU - ProLiant DL580 G7...

I managed to get the DL580 G7 in-house - Phase 1 is underway. Just waiting for a few more parts to arrive in the mail. Once it's finished, I'll be able to plan out an upgrade to a Tesla K80. Long-term objectives...

So I have followed the guide and converted the k10 to a k2 successfully with little trial and error. The soildering was the most difficult and took me 3 times lol. I also have been wondering about getting the k80 and converting it. I have a use for it as a compute card but would love to also have a remote server with graphics.

The only issue is, what would you turn the K80 into? Perhaps a pair of consumer Kepler cards? The K10 had GRID and GeForce counterparts that had similar specs to it. How would the K80 work?

I might test out one of the GPUs on my Tesla K10's tomorrow afternoon, if I get the time...

I have a pair of Tesla K80's coming in the mail this week. Might go straight for gold...

Hello, any news? I thinking about buying K80 too. I want insert it into dell vrtx

It's been pretty hectic for me recently. Right after I got the K80's, had to start troubleshooting other devices (HBA, NICs, etc.). I'll let you know when the K80's get their first test run.

Just wondering if you've made any head way I'm trying to use a k80 to run game Servers but the bios and card configuration will only allow each gpu on the k80 be assigned to one vm. I've been looking to see if there are any bios or hardware mods to make it work like say a p40 or m60. As of now the main limitation is you can assign half of the card to one vm and half to the other.

I'm actually working on a similar project, I have a tesla k80 and grid k1 I'll be testing. I hope to test soon but the server im working with (poweredge r710) isnt very well designed for gpus and the only risers I currently have access to are the 1x to 16x pcie risers most often used for mining. I know the speed is going to suffer, but using those is mostly for testing purposes right now. My main issue is that that these may not support the cards (especially the k80). Does anyone have any experience using these style risers for server grade gpus that could shed some light on the process?

Just switched jobs, and am working on a Linux VM with a GRID K520 attached. This is gonna take some time. The Linux VM did not like my last attempt to install nVIDIA drivers via pacman...

An update.

The GRID K520 has been jettisoned from the Linux VM, in favour of the Titan Z, due to difficulties with getting virtual displays/screens to work. The Tesla K80s have also been loaned out to a server partner who has a DL580 Gen8 (newer than what I currently own). We will be performing further testing once our schedules clear up. Currently fighting with a Linux VM on my part, which may take a while before I can divert my attention to the K80s again :(

yo yo just got some k80s for mining and need help or any info. Would It be possible to separate the processes into ea chip? They are 12g ea and server wise(I believe not much knowledgeable) it’s thinks into 2 if that makes any sense thanks!
