[Poll] What's the configuration of your main gaming PC build?

@W1zzard offers excellent reviews of CPUs and GPUs but they all have one common attribute: for GPUs they use top of the line CPUs, for CPUs they use top of the line GPUs. Such a configuration is common with many well-off people but it's quite uncommon in the real world as indicated by Steam hardware stats.

I'd like to run a poll and check what are the most common gaming PC builds for TPU users.

This poll is meant to understand if there's a need to couple mid-range CPUs/GPUs with mid-range CPUs/GPUs to assess their performance. It requires Google registration but does not collect any info about you. The results are public.

Take the poll.

Thank you!

Edit: just to make things clear: I created this poll on my own and this website/its owners/administration have nothing to do with it. It's really up to you if you want to take it.

Submitted. Hope more folks do the same. Look forward to the reported results.

The reason that reviewers use a high end CPU to bench GPUs is to remove the CPU as a possible limiting factor in the FPS. The reason reviewers use a high end GPU to review a CPU is to remove the GPU from being a possible limiting factor in games.

This is true the way I've been told by reviewers as well. But this topic does spark my interest in seeing some more real world system performance reviews from midrange GPUs and CPUs, how's a build I can afford perform? Or rather more relevant to the topic, how does the average TPU build perform in the TPU review gauntlet?

Maybe what you should do instead, is ask TPU to do some different reviews once in a while.
The time it takes to do the kind of reviews that @W1zzard and a few of the other reviewers here do, doesn't really allow for what you're asking for on a regular basis.
I ought to know, as I used to do large group tests once upon a time myself with 20-odd motherboard or graphics cards at a time. These days no-one really does those kind of tests, but W1zzard does at least do a lot of comparative tests with a wide range of different cards pitted against whatever is new and that's extremely time consuming.

I don't have anything against seeing reviews of similar to the current $700 gaming system, but with a couple of different options to show what makes the most sense in terms of the overall combination of hardware you can get for your money. Right now, it's just a list of suggested components, which is nice, but it would've been nicer to see some benchmarks with say 2-3 different graphics cards and maybe a couple of different CPU or RAM options thrown in as well. It would give people a good idea of what +/-$100 gets them when they're building a system.

Also, did you ask for permission from TPU before you start collecting people's data?

I've been recently employed by the NSA and all your computers are belong to us.

Also, did you ask for permission from TPU before you start collecting people's data?

All the people who feel paranoid about me or this poll can simply ignore it. Meanwhile even a cursory look will reveal that 1) there's nothing in it which can be used against you 2) it's 100% anonymous (as much as Google allows) 3) many TPU users already have their rigs configuration published ;)

But did I take anything from this website which didn't belong to me? It looks like I just created a topic with a poll which you're free to answer. Also if you don't like the topic or the poll, you can ignore both, no? I really don't understand what your concern is about. You can even blacklist me as an idiot who sticks his nose in other people's business. :)

Nowhere in the OP I wrote that "This poll will be run on behalf of TPU". I've just added a clarification to the OP.

You keep implying that I did something extremely terrible and horrible and I just don't understand what. Speaking of manners - is there anything which is not polite or reasonable? I don't get you, sorry.

When you use someone else's things to do something for your own interests, it's nice to ask for permission first, no?
Let's say I go and staple a missing cat sticker on your fence, would you be happy?

If you'd just posted a forum thread, I wouldn't be saying anything, but you're asking people to submit data on a third party website, using TPU and the community here as a resource, without even asking with the owner/managers/mods here if it's ok. I just think it's polite to ask for permission first, before doing something like that, but clearly you don't seem to grasp that concept.

I understand folk's concerns about this matter, and have submitted it for review to the moderation staff. The way I see it, the poll is clean, isn't personal, and is asking some simple questions. If you're nervous about tracking, don't fill it out.

Keep this conversation constructive to the topic or move along. There's a good topic here, let's not waste it on banter, move along if that's what you have to offer. The report feature is here for a reason, use it and exercise some self control please.

And if you can read, you can clearly see that I simply tried to explain my point of view, which the OP clearly didn't understand.
Also, if I had a serious issue with this, I would've reported it, which I didn't do.

Manners... and common sense. Starting a public poll that is stuck behind a login wall is retarded. Yes, Retarded, capital R.

I was going to take it, until I had to login.

Here, 1 search.. 2nd hit

Note, this is feedback, if you want a more representative result, make sure its open and hassle free.

Last warning, I get folks have opinions about the poll. You don't have to fill out a Google Forms poll if it truly bothers or concerns you, but you do have to keep it on topic. Thought I made that clear before? :shadedshu:

Frankly what I was hoping to see was some of that old TPU motivation for folks to not only sort out what an average TPU system may look like, but how it performs, and what that would look like if we were able to run it in the TPU gauntlet of review tests/benches, etc.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
interesting responses; so far as of now the average TPU system, without condensing responses, would look like:
$251+ for CPU so intel ~ 8600k, 8700k ,9600k, 9700K (but not top of the line) AMD 2700 - 3700x;
$300+ for GPU (2060 to 2080 or AMD equiv)
16GB of ram
playing at 1080P with everything overclocked.

I would further condense the responses on the poll to include AMD/INTEL and current CPU price and Core Count rather than the very specific responses we have now, as they are tough to aggregate.

It is pretty different and much higher end than the steam survey:

interesting responses; so far as of now the average TPU system, without condensing responses, would look like:
$251+ for CPU so intel ~ 8600k, 8700k ,9600k, 9700K (but not top of the line) AMD 2700 - 3700x;

The steam survey represents your typical gamer. TPU like many other forums is full of enthusiasts so the hardware would be a notch or two above average.

After all if I went onto a car enthusiast web site, I might think BMW and Audi sports cars sell more then Toyota and Ford family SUVs and sedans.

as they should :p. /jk

Seeing those specs really opened my eyes of how my years of being a technoweenie have jaded me. I can only imagine the purgatory that is trying to play PUBG / Control or Red Dead on a 4c 1060 o_O.

I'm sure they are having the same blast as anyone else with those games...outside of the game breaking bugs of RDR2. Just because you can play Call of Duty on ultra at 4k 100 fps doesn't mean someone else isn't having just as much fun at high settings at 1080p and 50fps

impossible. studies. show.

Fun scales linearly with FPS and resolution.
