I don't know if any you guys know this but there is a game out there called "The Witcher", ok actually it's a series with several RPG & card games and books/short stories. Netflix decided to make a series with little press so far but there is some good news for the TV series...

The good
Looks like the TV series is good enough to get a second season before the first season even hits Netflix

The bad
The second season won't hit Netflix until 2021

Whether it's good or bad news depends on the quality of the show, can't really say yet.

I give it a day before it gets moved to the Lounge like my thread above was. ;)

There's also a series of books that the game was loosely based on.
Which is what the TV series is based on, thankfully.

Is 2nd season a bad thing cause you can't wait? Lol, tell that to anime fans/watchers. Some don't have a sequel until years. Overlord got season 2 and season 3, three years after the original and the animation and CG was shit compared to first.

I watched first two episodes last night.

I like it! However....
If you know nothing about The Witcher, it will lose people by that point. I saw it billed as giving people the intrigue of GoT, and that may bring alot of those fans, who will say WTF. Not a lot is explained, and it is a slow burn.

I like that it is the early days of Geralt, and the beginnings of Yennifer as a sorceress trainee. Overall good production quality, set design and acting.

I could nitpick but overall the show is really good and it does justice to source material. I'm really glad it worked out well and there will be a second season. Since the short stories are done, I hope s2 will be more directed.

Actually, production value could be better. To be clear, nothing actually looks bad, quite the opposite. But you can see the budget constraints, particularly with some cgi elements. You can clearly tell GoT had a lot more money when comparing the two.

Cavill is great in the role, he just is the witcher you know. That was something I was concerned about. He's a fan of the franchise so I guess in hindsight that concern was unwarranted.
Yen will probably be controversial because the actress doesn't look like in the games and she looks too young and immature, but Anya also did a great job and I'm fine with the result.

Jaskier is cool too.

I watched the first five. In my opinion the first two are the worst so far and the series starts to take off with episode three.

There's also a series of books that the game was loosely based on.
Actually, the game was more based on Wiedźmin TV show (which in turn was loosely based on books).
Low-budget w/ mediocre story, but had everything an early 2000's teenage dude(like me) needed: swords, magic, monsters, dragons, tits and asses.
BTW, most of the mo-cap for Witcher 1 was done by stunt crew from the original Witcher TV show. And books only picked up popularity after this TV release, otherwise they would've parished into abbys, along with myriad of other eastern european fantasy novels of that period.

Not sure about this new Netflix adaptation, though. From trailers it looks more like some generic fantasy flick, not even close in atmosphere to games or even the first TV adaptation.

That’s because the basing is on the books.
“Instead, the Netflix show is based on the books by author Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski has published eight Witcher books since he started writing the series back in the mid-’80s when the illustrious Polish author first submitted Wiedzmín — “The Witcher” — to fantasy magazine Fantastyka.”

Apparently Sapkowski has also endorsed the new series, unlike his stance on the games.

There's some time shifts in the show that are a bit confusing at first that could be fixed with some text/context at the beginning. Besides that I really enjoyed it.

I read the books, doesn't feel like either to me. All I see is Superman in bad make up, I also have seen the Showtime series Tudors, where Henry Cavill plays a main... so it's just hard for me to disassociate his past roles when I see his face.

Apparently Sapkowski has also endorsed the new series, unlike his stance on the games.
He also participated in first show's screenplay writing, which was not that good either. CDPR simply bought rights, and did their own excellent "interpretation" of Witcher story, which is what made it into an international phenomenon. Sapkowski is mediocrity among the sea of many other fantasy writers of that time/era/region. His idea was good, but execution - never so much (I've read lots of fantasy back in high school and college, but haven't even heard of Sapkowski until the TV show).
Top it off with the smell of money and supervision from Netflix, and you get the riskiest and the most volatile combo ever. Maybe it'll be OK, but there is a high chance of it blowing up to pieces. I haven't watched the first season yet, so I can't really tell if they've already messed up or is it still ahead of them.

Yeah. Big fat cheque from an American company instead of measly $10k from a Polish company.
Iirc he also denied royalty money cause he said games will sell shit or sth.

So I finished the series last night. Some hits and misses among the episodes but I would say the last episode was the best one and catches the Witcher spirit.

Some of the dialogue and monsters at times scream Kevin Sorbo Hercules and can be cringe worthy.

There's some time shifts in the show that are a bit confusing at first that could be fixed with some text/context at the beginning. Besides that I really enjoyed it.

Expect some spoilers

I've seen some episodes. It's a telling of the short stories so far (6eps for me) which are in fact not in a chronological order just like they mostly arent in the short stories as well. I don't recall the order of the book stories them selves, however it's pretty easy to tell which ones happen first, which ones later etc. Perhaps some of the confusion comes from the constant-timeline adhering Ciri "side"story which to me looks like will end with the exact same way the short story books ending led into the 5book saga.

They do take some liberties and do some things that were never in the books. Maybe im just not remembering it right since its been a while since reading them but mousesack doesn't die, Yennefer doesn't have that "making of a witch" multiepisode segment they did, the golden dragon story is done in a way that is quite different from the books, the djin story was done quite differently as well, missing some cool moments between geralt and dandelion as well as the details of how things go down the djin (for starters it doesn't even take place in a city like in the books and the key moments take place in just some house that looks to be away from the city unlike the books). In the 1st story they don't even show that the gang was just waiting to butcher the entire market unless the mage comes out of his tower, which actually helps contextualize the different.. butchering that does eventually take place - that's not done here, he just wakes up and.. kills them because they were there..?!? .Anyway you get the point, a lot of details that quite different, the jist seems to be the same tho, mostly.
