Yep thats partly the selling point I think, was shopping for WD drives on Amazon and Newegg and a lot of the better deals are too good to be true: shady OEM drives, refurbs, out of region drives, etc so a brick and mortar store has some advantages.

Drive working well and imaged but its a bit loud and clunky, not used to this as my WD Blue WD10EZEX are so quiet. Seems like a common issue. Nice to have more storage and can relegate my Blue drives to backup duty.

To be fair, it's a Black series drive. It's a bit noisier, but it puts out the performance. That reminds me of the old SCSI 15Krpm drives BITD. Those mofo's were loud! I had a set of 5 of them(in RAID 5) and during start up they sounded like minature jet engines spooling up. I kid you not. Even the noisiest of today's drives are but a mere whisper of the drives of yesteryear.

I'd say this is a good sign as the enterprise series of drives sounds like this as well--and last and last because of that design obviously. I've always thought the super quiet drives were a bit dainty after growing up with classic hard drives that made noise.

I had a 10K SAS drive from Seagate and it had the most unsettling noise. I think the govt stole it for a torture device since I can't find it to have Seagate assist.. lol

And ugh.. I'm broke AF to even get this drive spent so much this month

I really need this, and there is even one at the office depot near me for pick up. However, I needed a better board and cpu upgrade more, so I will have to make do for awhile.

Fortunately the regular Amazon price for the exact same drive is just a little more than this so-called sale price. I’ll jist have to wait a little longer.

Apparently it unsettles enough people on Newegg reviews that WD has to comment the following assurance:

"Thanks for your interest in the WD Black Performance Internal hard drive; your feedback is always appreciated. The 'noise' heard is due to a feature used to prevent disturbances in media lube due to prolonged dwelling at a single location. During normal drive operation, type and volume of noise is dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation. "

First, I have a good amount of fans that provide a gentle white noise, because I don't like having a silent room, the thunk barely is noticable for me. Second, I remember listening to drives when I was a kid and this brings back some nostalgia so I don't mind it.

As an aside, I tried the Acronis software that WD provides on their site, seemed to work okay, imaged the contents of my old WD Blue WD10EZEX over to the new Black WD4005FZBX. They allow you to use the software on any manufacturers drive as long as you have a WD drive somewhere in your system. Unlike the Samsung Data Migration software which operates within Windows, Acronis uses a boot loader.
