Triton 700 vs Helios 300?

Which laptop would you guys go with, the Triton 700 with the gtx 1080, 7700hq, and 32gb of ddr4 ram or the 2019 Helios 300 with i7 9750, 16gb of ram, and the 1660ti? I just bought the Triton 700 on a whim for $999 on Acer for their 12 day's of Christmas sale and then got buyers remorse when I saw it had a 7700hq processor. Thanks everyone!

Depends what you need a laptop for really...

For gaming the 1080 is massively stronger. For productivity like media editing the extra CPU cores on the 300 will be king but the 1660Ti is some 50-60% slower than the 1080

Thanks for the info! This laptop is for gaming specifically. I was just trying to make sure I made the right choice and hopefully got a decent deal.

Unfortunately, according to the reviews the 1080 does throttle as it can reach 82'c when gaming

Having a dedicated laptop cooler for extended gaming sessions will help you alot as well as using some better thermal paste. - Since the GPu die is making direct contact with the heatsink, you could even use liquid metal but be real careful with that as its conductive. I would watch some videos on how to apply LM before you actually go ahead with it.

Fair, I've heard the Helios 300 maintains temps real well. That being said, do you think it would be wise to cancel this purchase and go with the newer laptop with a better cpu and better cooling?

Not my call to make. its not my money or my laptop, nor am i going to be the one using it. Reason why the helios runs cooler is because its GPU is weaker so the heat is easier to manage.

When you pack a tonne of high performance parts in a tiny chassis with tiny little fans that are slightly bigger than ping pong balls thave have to keep the air flowing. Expect there to be a lot of heat and a lot of noise as the fans ramp up to deal with said heat.

The only real way around this is apart from buying a proper PC is getting a boutique laptop from companies like Eurcom. Sager or XoticPC who over engineer the hell out of their gaming laptops but all that over engineering comes at a much higher price - its cheaper and easier just to buy a laptop cooling pad to help with the airflow when youre gaming.

Personally would've gotten the Helios with a more efficient GPU & much better CPU, although it'll throttle quicker since it's a hexa core. You didn't mention the price of Helios, was it around the same mark?

700 = GPU Throttle
300 = CPU Throttle

There is no clear winner and since gaming was the main use of the laptop the 700 still trumps the 300 even if the GPU throttles.

Both laptops should have the ability to undervolt through XTU which should prevent thermal throttling (try throttlestop / XTU) - honestly you're fine with your current laptop as a 7700HQ isn't that bad, we need to establish your use case before deciding whether the other laptop is worthwhile.
Though given your main use case here is just gaming.. you might as well stick to that 1080 laptop as it'll be much faster (as Freedom mentioned)

Yeah, my main use would be gaming. I was just hesitant to go with an older model Predator when the Helios is similarly priced. Do you think the GTX 1080 max Q is enough of an upgrade from the 1660ti to make it worth going with of the Helios for gaming? It also has g-sync, a larger SSD, and more ram. Thanks for your feedback!

It depends entirely on what games you play or intend to play - until you tell us that, we can't recommend anything. That said, you likely won't find a similarly-specced laptop for $999, so your buyer's remorse is misplaced in my opinion.

Very nice link demonstrating that while on paper the 1660Ti is quite a bit slower than the 1080 Max-Q, the newer card will mostly make up for it by running at higher clocks for longer periods of time.

Another thing to note is that the gap between the two cards only starts to become important at resolutions above 1080p, but since both laptops have 1080p panels it doesn't really matter. And while the framerate variance is up to 25% at times, the 1660Ti never drops into unplayable territory.

Finally, the Helios 300 is going to run considerably cooler and quieter due to its newer components. That also translates to longer battery life, which may or may not be important to you.
