No, that is no longer true - and in fact, for the vast majority of users, it never was true - that is, manually clicking for updates rarely ever made systems unstable. While it might have been true manually checking for updates got you some pre-release updates, those updates were still widely tested . It was not like MS was throwing users into preliminary beta testing of unproven code.

For what's it worth, I just saw notice of your new thread after rebooting this machine - the last of my 6 machines here I just manually updated with the latest updates. No problems with any.

Yes, sort of, major feature updates(new builds of the OS) can be gotten early by clicking the check for updates button. These are the updates that usually have the most issues.

However, it will tell you that the update is available but not automatically install it. You have to tell Windows to install the major feature update. You can also set Windows 10 Pro to not install these major updates for up to 1 year. I personally have it set to not install these updates until they have been out for 3 months. Most of the major issues are discovered by the 3 month mark.

It is important to remember by the time the update is made available via Windows Update (even manually) the odds it will break your installations are very small. If you only have one computer, then I sure would not be the first in line to update and instead, wait for any fallout. Unless you have a very unique hardware setup, or you have dinked a lot with defaults, I personally think delaying for a week or two at the most is plenty. If problems are discovered, it will be right away and even just a week will give MS plenty of time to at least put a hold on or pull the update from their servers, if necessary.

If, like me, you have several machines at your disposal, test the update out on your lower priority systems. Chances are, the update will work just fine and you can move on to the higher priority systems. That is what I do.

And since W10 came out in 2015, I have never had any Windows Update brick any of these systems here. Worse case was a locked system, cleared with a simple reboot. I have had a Updates fail a few times over the years, but none that required any action beyond waiting for MS to re-release the fixed update.

Three of my systems were older W7 systems that were updated to W10, including my Toshiba notebook that is coming up on 10 years old. Any problems I encountered where with these 3 older systems. The other 3 computers where built new since W10 came out, and were running W10 from the start.

This suggests to me hardware designed for W10 is less prone to problems. While this is only a sample of 6 machines, I have seen similar results with several dozen client and other systems.

Still, nothing is fool proof and there could be other outside influences too. A power outage could happen at the worst possible time, or even a drive failure. So even if you've never had any issues, always keep current backups - just in case.

That's the thing - the vast majority of W10 users haven't had problems - ever! Contrary to what the MS bashers want everyone to believe, it really is a great operating system that just keeps getting better. And now, with W7 support ending today, Microsoft will be able to concentrate more and more of their resources on W10 to ensure W10 continues its refinement.

The problem is, there currently are an estimated 900 million W10 users out there. If only 1/10th of 1% have problems, that's still 900,000 upset users and 900,000 upset users can make a lot of noise. But to make matters worse, reports of problems are then repeated over and over again, exaggerated and amplified by bloggers and many in the IT press seeking attention so now it seems like almost all W10 users are having problems. So a tiny problem affecting a few goes viral and turns into mass hysteria by the Windows haters and wannabe journalists.

One thing that has happened since W10 first came out is MS slowed down their "feature" updates - taking more time to fine tune, and if necessary, bug-fix existing features before releasing new features. That has helped to ensure updates are bug free. If they continue that trend and don't get ahead of themselves again, W10 will just keep getting better and better.

Frankly, with virtually every single one of those 900 million W10 systems becoming unique within the first few minutes after the first boot - with unique hardware setups, unique security setups, unique personalizations, user accounts, network configurations, installed software, etc. I think it amazing more systems don't have problem.

No doubt, there will be future problems. With over 30 million lines of code in W10, that's inevitable. Hopefully they will be fewer and farther between and more importantly, those reporting them will keep the impact in proportion and report the truthful reality and not their own biases.

No longer true after the fail out from Feature Update 1809. Microsoft listened to the feedback, and added in a new option to postpone a feature update for up to 14 days.

It can be true. And recent updates have proven that disabling auto-updates can be a wise idea for those who have unique/specialized hardware or prefer to be very careful. I personally do selective manual updates as a rule.

Granted, this is part of what my shop specializes in, so we are going to see it as a course of doing business. The problem is, Windows 7 updates causing issues were never as bad/frequent as they have been with Windows 10.

Well, MS dropped/relocated a lot of staff that worked on QA. So, the updates' quality went down, regardless of the fact that there a few million Insiders now doing part of that work.

To be honest, I'm always kinda surprised about the amount of people who have had problems with Windows 10. My experience has been relatively smooth, with few hiccups along the way...

the frequency started rising with 8.0, and I have to agree that its probably due to lack of accurate testing. I had read last year I think, that a lot of other issues involved m$ trying to embed Xbox into windows along with its invasive store and its uninstallable malware, err, I mean store features.

I expect eventually everything will be migrated to "Settings". I think Control Panel's days are numbered.
