Upgrade Ryzen 1600 to 2700X

So when I was buying Ryzen 5 1600 in summer 2017 I was originally thinking I would upgrade to 3rd gen, but seeing how cheap 2700X is right now (1900SEK in Sweden, roughly $200), would this be a good way to hold on till 5. gen Ryzen?

I would continue using my Asus Prime B350-Plus, my system specs are up to date. Selling 1600 and Wraith Prism would hopefully bring relative price of 2700X down to about 800SEK ($85).

3600 goes for 2300SEK ($240), 3600X is 2600SEK ($270) but they don't come with Wraith cooler that I could sell. 3700X is way too expensive at 3900SEK ($400), and I would rather pair it with X570 board, so no.

Prices will continue to drop as new models come out. I'd rather wait till 4000 series comes out, and then get a 3700x, but that's me...

Also, are you really expecting to get more for your used 1600, than what a new one costs?

Not necessarily need extra cp, but it would be nice to have for maybe next 3 years. I would be selling cooler too, used 1600 goes for 800-900, new is 1150, and unused Wraith Prism goes for 250-400, seems 1100 for both is possible, hence my math.

Is this primarily for gaming? If so it's almost a lateral move. I'd save my money, wait for the Ryzen 4xxx to come out and grab a discounted Ryzen 3600

Is a 5-15fps jump for you in games worth it, prolly not. If you need more fps in games the best thing you can do is upgrade your video card to something else, or grab another one of what you got a run in CF or Sli, though some games dont make use of it and in some case run the same or worse then running one card. I had a 1600 (non x) and my gtx 1070 with it and did well for 1440P and 1080P, and now I have a 3600X ONLY because I got a super deal on it off anandtech for $180 shipped, and now Im able to do a little more 4k gaming since I can get over 30fps with some games. Im not one to fully believe you need 1000 fps at 4k, or 1080p for that matter, unless youre a hard core gamer and need that respose time and as little lag as you can squeeze out of your system, but a casual gamer doesnt really notice it too much. So not knowing what card you got Id say spend your money on a AMD RX 5400 or 5700 if you have the budget for it. If not you can pick up a GTX 1070 now for around $200 usd that will get you the fps you need for now till a RTX 2070 comes down in price, or a AMD RX 5800.

Unless you do a lot of coding, zip, video editing, and such then yeah it will make that go quicker, but jumping to that for gaming, I wouldnt do it, but get a different video card for you will see much more gains in the fps department then jumping to a different Ryzen cpu. AND ALL OF THIS IS IMO of course, its really up to you what works best for what you need it for

Saw your specs, your running a RX 5700 XT card now, so thats a bang of a card in its own rights, why is it you want to move to a 2700x then? Your gains are going to be very minimal doing so if your just gaming. Whats going on you feel the need to upgrade that? Just keep saving them duckets and get a 3900 or 3950 if you want to get the most gains from a cpu jump then, then wasting your money on that cpu now.

This video uses a 2600 vs a 3600, both non x, but pay attention to the scores given with the 2600 for it litterally just about 3-5fps faster then a 1600 in games, but should give you the idea as to the minimal gain you will get if you go to a 2700x for its but a lousy 5 or so frames faster then a 2600. Heck I was toying with the idea of getting a 3900x for my rig at tax time, but its but maybe 5 frams different in games not to warrant spending all that money on it, but take it and jump to a GTX 2070 instead for me. And forget the 2080, wtf almost a grand for that card, no thank you, Im not made of gold

The 3600 or 3600X would be a much greater upgrade and can easily match the 2700X in multithreaded loads

Or since you waited this long already just go Ryzen 4000

For me it would be pretty hard considering its 20% cheaper the 3600 is definitely not anywhere near 20% faster

I personally would be looking at 1% lows when trying to decide if this was worth it to me.

ACO 1600X to 2700X 18% to 3600 10%

BFV 1600x to 2700X 11% to 3600 2%

FCND 1600X to 2700X 15% to 3600 -2%

WWZ 1600x to 2700X 10% to 3600 -5%

SOTTR 1600X to 2700X 15% to 3600 11%

So that $85 nets you a decent gain imho but the extra $40 is going to depend a lot of what games you play.





For popular MT applications the 3600 is going to be slower.

Premiere Pro and Blender are 12% and 15% faster completion time on a 2700X although if you spend all day compressing stuff the 3600 is like 2% faster but once you need to uncompressed it the 2700X is almost 18% faster.




Sorry for the long post but this is really a tough one and I had to go back and look at some data and honestly the 3600 isn't very impressive vs a $40 cheaper 2700X if they were the same price I would hands down pick the 3600 though.

but the 1600 is a good cpu, alot games runs well, at multitask application it loses out to the newer ryzen cpus

i'd say use ur 1600 for another year and then grab a ryzen 4000 series,
if you have money for 2700x now save it up, add more funds and grab a higher core ryzen 4000 series cpu when it releases at the end of 2020

Easily, my HTPC's 2600K still packs quite a punch even it's a 9 years old CPU

Thanks for your replies. As I said this felt as nice upgrade for small amount of money, plus I could keep this system for 2-3 years. Maybe I will just leave it as is and wait it out until gen5.

Just an update, I found and bought open box 3600 for 1800sek (185$). Few bent pins but already fixed and it's working. And my RAM finally works at specified speed of 3200MHz (before 3066 max).

Couldn't resist buying it.
