Ok, so I finally got off my ass and fixed the pins. Oh, and fuck Newegg one more time for good measure.

View attachment 141576

It's not perfect but it should slide into the socket just dandy. Unlike that shit Newegg sent me back. Fuck Newegg again.

Now time to order another Mobo and RAM for testing. I think I'll go B450 itx and try out Oloy ram. I'll try itx as it may become my server/Dev box if none of my friends want to buy it.

Never used em because i could get better prices elsewhere.

@moproblems99 glad to hear the pins straightened out. For future information, don't be afraid to take a small screwdriver and put them back as they should be, just be gentle and take your time. I've depinned a couple of old PGA CPUs in my old collection, including a Socket 370 Celeron, an AM2 Athlon 4400+, and a Socket 478 T7100. Save for the considerably smaller (and with more fragile pins) mobile T7100, every pin on the Athlon would take numerous back-and-forth motions bending all the way to one side and back to the other until they would break off. The AM2(+)/3(+)/4 CPUs are pretty similar, and AM4 just increases the pin count, that's all.

The Strix B450 and MSI B450 ITX boards have particularly strong power delivery and reasonable feature sets. The Aorus isn't bad either, just a little short on phases compared to the other 2 (same excellent IR35201 controller and family of PowIRstages); I have mine driving a 3700X in a ~12.5L case and temps are well under control even in hours-long Prime95.

Yeah, it looks like I could push that one pin inward a little more. I'll probably do that. Now that I have seen it, I know I will. The picture makes it look a little worse than it really was. When the board comes in, I'll likely drop it in the socket and see how it does. If it falls right in like it should I probably won't mess with it anymore. Every time I mess with it I mutter "Fuck Newegg" for a few hours after so I try not to look at it too much.

Thanks for the recommendation on boards. I have a Coolermaster Box 130 or something that will go in. I think it only has a 450W psu in it right now so I dunno. I was going to put one of the RX 580s I have sitting around in it but not with that PSU. One of them has a 650 Corsair and the other has a 450W Corsair I think. The SFF PSUs were hard to come by.

Although the more I think about this, the more I realize I need to think this through more. I don't want to sit there and listen to that damn wraith cooler spin up and down all the time since it will spend most of its life on idle.

You could try changing the delay before the fan ramps up in the BIOS related to temperature, and fan speed. How well that would work with the stock cooler is another matter.

Until Seasonic makes a line of SFX units, I'll keep recommending the Corsair SFs. I've had my first generation SF600 Gold for a bit over 3 years now; the current SF600 and SF750 are Platinum rated I think.

I have a U9S and it ramps up too, despite it not actually getting that hot. With small coolers, there's only so much you can do with hysterisis and custom fan curves, unless the rig really doesn't do anything intensive ever, in which case just set a really conservative fan curve.

I see you already have a 3900X and this is a secondary computer; if your 3700X is binned well enough for it (not too high a bar for this) and you want to get rid of the ramping, you can lock it to about 4.0GHz fixed freq with the minimum stable Vcore and it'll just behave like a Ivy or Haswell Intel chip, no spikes. And if it's a secondary rig anyway, you won't notice the tiny single thread performance loss. Mine can do 3.6GHz (the base clock) @ just under 1.0V, and 4.0 @ 1.195V. Both run really cool and quiet, though I normally use boost.

I have two choices with what to do with it. I have a T3500 with an 8c/16t xeon in it that I have thought about turning into my server but the damn tower is big enough that I don't really want to use it anymore so I might sell it. So I have a choice between a sandy bridge xeon or 3700x for my server. Or my i5 2400s that is currently my server although I haven't set it back up for like 4 months....

Anyway, if it serves its life as my dev computer, I am not too concerned with the ramp as it would only be on when I use it which won't be a lot because I am lazy and don't dev that much anymore.

Alrighty, Mobo and RAM ordered. I ended up ordering some Oloy RAM to try out as I have never tried them and a Gygabyte Aorus B450 mitx board as I have never had a Gygabyte board.

The system it is going in has a 450w Corsair sff PSU but I have a 600w Corsair sff that I can swap should the cables match. I presume they will. It will be paired with one of my old mining 580s. Then I have to figure out what to do with it. Probably sell the T3500 and keep this I suppose.

Well, I should be telling you that my 3700X works a treat right now. It dropped right into the socket like nothing. but....

I am building mini itx and was thinking that one of my 6 RX 580s or my GTX 980 would drop right in. LOL mini itx. Full size cards....LOL

Well, that's the price to pay. :( Real SFF, and you run into problems with triple fan card length and air coolers. Don't compromise on performance, and the only thing small about the PC will be the board. Maybe the Element NUCs will change things in due time, but that relies on Intel moving to a process and arch on desktop that is actually conducive to SFF.

This generation is alright. The 2060/2060S/2070 FE cards are actually pretty short and incredibly well put together. Zotac makes an even shorter version of all three cards, but they run a little warm. Powercolor has a 5700 ITX design (in theory, a great idea, the 5700 is very efficient) mirroring the R9 Nano's dimensions, but it's not available here.

thats what my primary PC is, ITX with full sized GPU. I dont need half a dozen PCI-E slots, by the time i want faster integrated wifi it'll be board upgrade time anyway.

Well, that's the price to pay.

Well, this one was really just to throw together and see if the CPU actually worked still. I didn't really plan on spending a bunch more.

Plus, I am dealing with a 450w PSU. I may just pick up an Rx 560 on the cheap. But a 2060 is appealing

According to the manual, I can only fit 210mm. Which is none of my spare cards.

Well, after hours of digging through all the bins, I found a 5770 to test with. Drum roll please....

It all works. A little tight so if I should happen to keep this, I need to do some reorganizing, a better cooler, and a new gpu.

@moproblems99 : In the future when you have bent pins, take a good quality mechanical drafting pencil 0.7, remove the lead and use the metal tube tip to straighten the pins. Much easier method than other objects.

I am using a CM Elite 110, I think that is what it is called anyway. Squarish little thing. At this point it was idling at 48c. The sff PSU covers about 1/3 of the Wraith with about 1-2mm to spare. You couldn't do a full-sized PSU.
