Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 KB4524244 Issues and Pulls the Update

Microsoft pulled the standalone KB4524244 security update February 15, 2020, from Windows Update after confirming user reports about freezes, boot problems, and installation issues since it was released on February 11.

KB4524244 was designed to address "an issue in which a third-party Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) boot manager might expose UEFI-enabled computers to a security vulnerability."

Redmond also says that KB4524244 can cause the 'Reset this PC' feature (aka 'Push Button Reset' or PBR) to fail on Windows 10 and Windows Server devices where it was installed.

"You might restart into recovery with 'Choose an option' at the top of the screen with various options or you might restart to your desktop and receive the error 'There was a problem resetting your PC'," Microsoft explains.

The KB4524244 issues affect both home and server installations, a list of all impacted platforms is available in the table embedded below.

KB4524244 pulled, workaround available
To help users of affected devices, "the standalone security update, KB4524244 has been removed and will not re-offered from Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or Microsoft Update Catalog," Microsoft says on the Windows 10 Health Dashboard.

"This does not affect any other update, including Latest Cumulative Update (LCU), Monthly Rollup or Security Only update."

Users who have installed the update and are experiencing issues can follow this procedure to uninstall the update and get rid of the problems:

It buggered up my Logitech software. Once it loaded I could move. my mouse but couldn’t click anything. I had like 5-10 seconds on boot before the software loaded and I lost the clicks Took my awhile to figure it out and removing the update didn’t it fix it...tabbing around my OS trying to troubleshoot wasn’t fun...

I have a self-built PC, and I haven't had a single problem with this update. I'm planning to leave it installed for now.

I never seem to have issues with "problem" updates, they always work fine for me.

There is a security bug in some Mobo bios (UEFI) which can be penetrable in OS like windows or linux gnu. Microsoft release a Temporary fix to secure their OS for this vulnerability . This security bugfix should be done by Mobo vendors not MS. MS try to be the good guy here but it looks like their fix didn't work with some Hardware vendors. Some people rather happy with their mouse software works than security concern. @DeathtoGnomes

You have to realize, each time this happens, it's not a widespread problem. If it was, MS's QA would have caught it. That said, with the market share Windows commands, a problem affecting .1%, still breaks a lot of systems

In all seriousness, you might be the one person who missed the news over 3 years ago: MS let their QA dept go as unnecessary. So no, they wouldn’t have caught anything. That is exactly what they have used the insiders for.

This kind of thing is why I always delay my monthly updates by 8 days.

Edit: actually 5 years almost. It was 2015 IIRC.

That was definitely not about using insiders for QA, it was about developers taking the role of QA as well. I don't know whether that ever came to pass.
