Hi guys and girls

Looking for a bit of advice for a limited budget build mainly geared towards graphics design/drawing I guess is what you'd call it.

My brother has decided he wishes to purchase a hueion 13 Pro drawing tablet but requires a budget rig to run it. He initially looked at a laptop but sub £300 won't really suffice his needs

I've thought he's probably best on the AMD side due to the image editing, maybe something along the lines of a last gen ryzen 2600x or maybe even 2700??

What motherboard would be the best bang for buck budget board under £100 probably closer to £50-£70, I've thought about the asrock b450m? This is the biggest hurdle I'm not an AMD guy

Im excluding graphics cards just now as he's not going to game and would be fine on the on board to start off with or can use my old nvidia if required until his budget rebuilds

Ram any generic 3600mhz sticks about 16gig will do so I can source them and I'm going with something like a seasonic 500w psu, case isn't an issue and peripherals/screen as hell use the 50" TV

I guess what I'm asking is what system would you build for me with a limit of around £400

Thanks

Because it's a cheap sub £90 kit with good timings.
OP Specified 3600mhz memory. Go ahead, find a cheaper kit that isn't significantly worse.
Or how about suggest better options instead of picking on a hot topic and not providing a solution.

This is what I would be looking at parts wise

He will need to use your GPU in this build but he would get a pretty decent starting point the MSI mortar is by far the best sub $100 B450 board imo.

3600 would concern me with ryzen+ so unless he can afford Ryzen 3000 I would go with a cheaper 3200 kit.

His limited budget is going to be a struggle in general and this build doesn't include a case.

Ryzen+ specifically the 3200/3400g are better with memory than the typical ryzen+ 2xxx series for some reason.
Plus you can tweak the subtimings and tighten them up while reducing the mhz if it turns out that 3600 memory isn't stable on the silicone lottery CPU/board you have.
Point is, a good 3200 kit isn't really that much cheaper £10 roughly than a good 3600 kit like the one I linked. Secondly, the iGPU really loves memory bandwidth so you want the best kit you can run.

I would really hesitate against recommending non SSD storage even in a £400 build.

I would hesitate to recommend a quad for any use case in 2020. He can try 3600 all he wants but if it doesn't work and he isn't experienced enough to tinker in bios it could be a very bad day. SSD is easy to add later if necessary but you can't magically add 2-4 more cores a 2700X also fits around 400 with my parts list that is going to gain him a lot more than 3600 ram.

It's a graphics design build. Not a video editing build. Having a good GPU is more important than having 12 threads rather than 8.

Hey bud, we're looking at UK.pcpartpicker not the US version. Due to OP specifying £400 not $400 budget.
Hence UK price differences are relevant not US price differences.

Yes do the conversion 54 vs 89.99 pounds which comes out to about $45 usd. I wouldn't recommend something before converting it in my own currency to see how it compares in price.

Alternatively he could do this

For only 417 pounds. Although there is only 1 AF left in stock.

Thanks for that system recommendation, is 3600mhz ram the "sweet spot" for ryzen? I know intel is lower speed and can enable xmp over clock black blah but pass never fiddled with amd yet heard frequency has a bigger effect on the ryzen processor

Thanks its getting harder to decide and its not even my build. I'm assuming that mobo is bettrr than the other? The corsair ram is clearly faster but I'm not sure if cut the budget in ram and get the better mobo combo

I'm quite happy to give him a hardrive for storage or buy him a cheapo £15 240gb ssd aswell to get it going then upgrade to proper storage options later I was thinking that the ssd

It can help but I would only buy a 3600 kit that is on the motherboard QVL. If this was a ryzen 3000 build with a larger budget sure.
If you can find a 3600 kit with CL18 or lower timings on the qvl for 10-15 pounds more than the kit I listed go for it.

3200 CL16 on Ryzen+ should be more than adequate though especially at 54 pounds and I know for sure that MSI motherboard is even good enough to handle a Ryzen 3950X without catching on fire.
FC_Ultra.pngfarcry5-ddr4-clock-speeds-normal.png
Games afaik benefit the most from faster memory but I still don't see enough of a boost in a pc that is budgeted around 400 to warrant spending over 10% of the total build cost on a couple % more performance. maybe someone else can show results that state otherwise but I couldn't find any.

hooking up your buddy with an ssd would be a really nice gesture and give him an even better starting point even an uber budget one will be much faster for the OS.

Appreciate the reply I've put forward a basic build that picks parts from the recommended n gave him a saving target hopefully I'll get it together soon n monitor for potential price drops. Yeah the budget ssd really sped up my old sandy rig that's still plodding along for less than £20

Well.... the words "budget" and "graphic design " are usually not/should never be used in the same sentence, at least if you wanna maintain your sanity anyways ....:D..:fear:

Well.... the words "budget" and "graphic design " are usually not/should never be used in the same sentence, at least if you wanna maintain your sanity anyways ....:D..:fear:

Yeah tell me about it it seems like an impossible task

I've stuck together as there is a great sale on just now in places

3600x or 2700x (3600x is currently same price as 2700x)
B450 tomahawk max motherboard
16gig corsair lpx vengeance 3200mhz
Corsair 500w psu

Borrowing my old gpu and case/ peripherals and ill get him a budget ssd to put windows 10 on

If you are buying Zen+ (2000) then pick up some Oloy RAM on the cheap. Works fine for what you will need.

Apologies if decisions have already been, on mobile and too lazy to scroll that much.

Tough one, both are excellent CPU at their current prices the 3600 is going to be a decent amount faster on anything that uses less than 12 threads. The other factor that may or may not matter is the 2700X comes with a substantial better cooler the wraith stealth the 3600 comes with is garbage so you'll probably want to upgrade that asap if it ends up being the choice.

Honestly, I would go with the 3600X or even the 3600. As I said above, I would try and shave some money with some el cheapo Oloy. I have some in my spare 3700X build and it works a treat.

I don't think it's available in the UK at least I couldn't find it for sale.... it's an uber budget ram brand vs the lower tiered corsair/gskill etc it isn't drastically different.

I picked up 32gb of 3600 cl18 for $119. It was $105. 16gb was $40 for 3200 cl16.

If I recall, I paid either $250-$270 for the ram and Gygabyte b450 mini itx board. It was Amazon as well.

Additionally, Graphic design runs off Potatoes. When I worked doing dev work, our graphic crew was doing video editing and graphic work on 4/8 laptops with integrated Intel.

You're in the UK? I can't find it at any shops there.

No, not in UK. I missed your not available in UK. That sucks.

its 70+ here in the states also so not really worth buying imo anymore

@white phantom if that corsair kit you're looking at is the around 72 pounds that's probably about as good as it gets shame that crucial kit jump 26 pounds it was a pretty value at 54.
