HP Zbook G1 and G2 GPU MXM [GTX 980m] (really im pretty pissed)

You are modding a ferrari with an engine from a toyota, zbooks are a masterpiece of engineering, leave it to the engineers that gave you a choice of multiple cpus and gpus to match, dont toy with it, the bios is heavily customized, I have one and it works like butter because everything is by the spec. Just get an msi laptop with max-q and leave the workstation replacement laptops be. This is a serious machine, not a gaming toy.

You won't have a power hungry card running in a notebook not designed for it. And a 1070 uses less power than a 980, plus they are using a very specific one.

Yup some laptops/notebooks are specific purpose built, only top end Eurocom's with a gaming card can handle such workloads as well.

Anything thinner than the image i gave out is a notebook to me lol.

you're pushing your luck.... but do inform if succesful, i still think k4100m is enough for 1080p, .mind you you will get a warning screen and need to mod inf

You need DreamColor display, 980M is max for Zbook without DC screen.

Pascal cards will only work with eDP

Getting the dreamcolor display + finding all cables is such a underpricing effort that It becomes more expensive for your wallet, time, nerves than buying new laptop with latest i7 and gtx gpu. MXM is an old technology that is too pricey.

I customized my Zbook only because I got it free and had green light to invest some money in it. If I sell it, I still get profit.

I see that Lamar said that he edited .inf files, and disabled driver signature enforcement...I understand what you meant by disabling, but how do you edit the .inf files?

I have a Zbook17 G1 with a K5100M, and I'm interested in upgrading to a GTX 980M. I would love to hear how you guys did it.

Hi ! Glad You Made it. actualy I'm gonna do the same upgrade . could you tell me how you fit full size mxm 980m in to Zbook g1
as i saw mine - there's shortened version of mxm cards could fit in . and at least i've found that only gtx 965 fits in there. or you removed some parts of the body ? i can't remember for sure, but there's SATA port for DVD drive. it's not a problem to remove it but i don't think you did it.
And also I have DreamColour display - it's a Pain in the ass . wanan change for regular one.

The Zbook -> 17 <- G1 will easily fit the card that is pictured on the left side. I didn't remove nothing from parts. From what I remember, the drive plugged back with no problems. DreamColor display, I'm not sure if 965 will work with it. You should have better luck with 1070. And P.S: I didn't quite like the sound coming from fan while gaming/heavy work, so i just sold the laptop and got a PC :S

Upgrading from K5100M is so unlikely IMHO, it has almost same specs as 980m(little bit worse for gaming because the card was made for other purposes).
