I wasn't sure to put this in Builders Advice or Motherboards as I will likely have other questions depending on how this goes. Please move this thread if need be.

Since I'm working from home due to the Rona, I've been starting to toy with building out a new system to replace the one in my specs. Main uses will be gaming and home office work (web stuff, word, nothing crazy). At the moment I play on an older 60hz 1080p Dell Ultrasharp. I plan on upgrading this at some point to 1440 so the system will need to handle both. For the time being I plan on keeping the 1070 Ti that I currently have. I have been really toying with the idea of moving to AMD with a Ryzen 3600x or 3700x. I know that I'd like to stick with a mATX system and really like the Corsair Crystal 280x RGB. One of the issues I seem to be having is finding mATX X570 boards. I've been using PC Partpicker and have also looked at Newegg (my prefernce) and both only seem to have 2 options available. I don't plan on overclocking from the start but may consider down the road (just as with my current system, I plan on keeping this for a while). Realistically, what am I loosing by going with a B450 board over an X570? I don't keep up with stuff as well as I used to, is overclocking even possible on a B450?

Sorry I know that was a lot to read so TLDR: If I went Ryzen, what would I miss out on by going with a mATX B450 board over an mATX X570?

Above all, thank you for your answers and your patience!

Edit, forgot budget. $1200 USD without GPU upgrade. $1500 with.

the x570 has pci-e 4.0 support, so faster ssd support i guess. Usb 3.2, a few more m.2 slots on the x570 compared to b450
if you dont really need those then b450 is a solid choice, if you dont have a budget i suggest you get the 3700x.

I would be looking at something like this it leaves you about $400 to add a storage/cpu cooler etc of your choice.

Had to edit post due to originally posting from the app and not being able to see your specs.

There are currently no good x570 matx boards some of the B450 ones are really bad like 100C on the VRMs with a 2600X bad so do your research.

You probably should just stick with the GPU you have unless you want to go with somthing like this

one gives you about a 30% gaming improvement the other 53%

My understanding from looking around at specs, is PCI-e 4.0 is the only real benefit of X570.
B450 and X470 might need a BIOS update to run the latest processor but some can out of the box.
Look around and you can find X470 with USB 3.2 A and C (gen 2).

I'd get something like this
3700x
16GB 3600mhz ram - brand wise g.skill,patriot,kingston and corsair
1tb Crucial P1 m.2 Nvme ssd or 500gb 970 evo plus
650w - 750w psu - brand wise seasonic, corsair
970 evo plus for a faster drive but smaller capacity but the crucial p1 is good value and its not that much slower
corsair ram is a hit and miss with amd platform these days

The motherboard is likely to last you through another CPU upgrade so I would go X570 if you can itx or atx if you have to.

A 12 or 16 core ryzen 4000 CPU will likely be a good option a couple years from now.

Corsair you have to be stingy with, go to their site and look at Ryzen Ram modules. And Corsair PSUs, stay away from CX/CS/VX, go with RM.

I see you guys tossing around "Samsung B dies" alot. Is it safe to assume that if I'm looking at DDR4-3600 with tight timings that it's B die? Is there a list?

Anything with 3200 14-14-14-34 or 3600 16-16-16-36 are all good Bdie afaik.... There are plenty of crap kits with Bdie as well to be sure
stick to the low latency stuff.

For a budget set stick with 3600 17-19-19-39 but only if its $25 plus cheaper than a Bdie kit imo

I wouldn't go for 2080 Super or anything extreme since his goal is 1440p. I'd get x570 for sure and maybe invest in 1TB NVMe drive top notch like samsung 970 pro or at least 970 evo plus and a 2TB storage. With the graphics purchase I'd rather focus on the monitor. Does it supports freesync or NV gsync or the compatible one adaptive to make the graphics card purchase decision. If OP knows what monitor he's going to get, he should pick graphics card accordingly.

I haven't gone that far yet as the main concern is the system upgrade. This whole upgrade may be a few months down the road. I'm just trying to do my research and get my facts down. Thank you all for the help so far!

I understand but you are buying new monitor as you've mentioned or at least you want to change it? Graphics card goes along with the monitor. Depending which monitor you wanna get, or at least think of getting that would tell you a bit of the graphics card you may require for compatibility. If it's 160Hz you may require a bit power with your GPU to get sustainable 160FPS. Just giving you my point of view since there's so many things you need to consider. I was referring to one of the proposals from the system builder. $1k for the one with 5700xt which is decent and since your budget is higher you can easily add NVMe drive to it and stay with your current card and swap monitor and/or GPU later.

If this build is a couple months out definitely hold off for a next gen GPU.

Go with a 3700x and add really good storage like @ratirt is saying. Decent cooling would be nice as well... then hold out/save up for a 6700 XT or rtx 3080 or whatever they call them.

I would also looked at the 011 dynamic they're coming out with a smaller version of it.

Im not tossing around anything, corsair has been the most troublesome for ryzen users

Some have had good fortune with Hynix or even a different samsung die

Sorry, was not meant to mean in this thread. I've seen users advocate for getting good b-die memory in other threads, that's what I was referring to :)

I think that's the direction that I want to head. My 1070 Ti is performing fine in the games I play (BF V, Borderlands 3 and Tarkov). I just know that the 3570k is starting to show its age

Yeah there is good slightly cheaper ram especially the 3600 CL17 stuff but if he can afford low latency memory then its ideal.....

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/czhGV7 - top tier Ryzen build. Better memory and storage options than others here, 4 extra cores. For $1200 you can afford that. Don't know why people are recommending the 3700x when the 3900x is $400.

32GB of RAM too, instead of 16GB which isn't very future proof at this time.

Pretty nice alternative... I love the 3900X but for 100 extra dollars that could be used for the GPU upgrade he wants to make later he's going to get no noticable gaming performance difference.

I personally wouldn't touch that astock mobo it seems worse than their not so great steel legend in the vrm department looking at the components used.

For a cpu that will spend 90% of its time using less than 125w the vrm isn't very important.

Idk I can get mine to easily hit 160-180w during a blender avx load.
Also look at how bad some of the msi board fare with a 3900x

And if you're just gaming it's pointless still pointless to spend the extra $100

Again I wouldn't buy a poor motherboard with a terrible i/o panel on purpose.

Ok so find an alternative micro atx board.
That's what I thought

The 90% of time under 125w and blender avx load... Yeah definitely what you'll be doing 90% of the time...

200mhz faster boost and double the ram bandwidth won't matter for gaming

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/czhGV7 - top tier Ryzen build. Better memory and storage options than others here, 4 extra cores. For $1200 you can afford that. Don't know why people are recommending the 3700x when the 3900x is $400.

32GB of RAM too, instead of 16GB which isn't very future proof at this time.

That's a pretty impressive alternative. I'm starting to think that if I go with a Ryzen build that mATX is just not going to be the answer. I looked up reviews for that ASRock board and there aren't many, but the ones I found do not put the VRM situation in poor light. I just wish there were more options available. Maybe my best bet is waiting a bit and seeing what comes with comes with the next Gen and just let my system keep trucking along for now.

Hold your horses you don't recommend a X570 board and then a Samsung 970 Pro or EVO Plus drive they are both PCI-E x4 Gen3.

At least go with Gen4 SSD otherwise why not stick to a B450 board and save the money?

I use a MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC board because I am not using PCI-E Gen4 because I already have a Samsung 970 EVO 500GB and a GTX 1080 Ti both uses Gen3.

There are several good options for a Gen4 NVME SSD out there and prices ain't bad for most.
