Is there any software to down size movie files

I have lots of movies and I was wondering what program(s) are useful to downsize the size of the movies and shows that I have.
Most normal movies that I have are in the 3-6gb size. I would love to make them smaller, maybe 1-2gb each.

You can use compression software... 7zip or winzip. But that is more for archive than anything.

It could depend on where these movies came from. If you downloaded them, they may already be compressed. You might be able to compress them further, but then risk compromising quality.

Better to retrieve a smaller sized version of the movies from your source. Quality will be less, but better than you recompress the versions you currently have.

Sometimes I recode them with Nero Recode to get smaller sized files. As others have mentioned you do lose video quality.

If a file is already compressed and further compression will look awful, you can consider dropping a resolution step. Say, 1080p > 720p. Its a huge chunk of data but you still keep the image quality mostly. For moving images resolution is not everything, and usually much less painful than losing color/image data itself.

There are a lot of ways to reduce file size on video files. If your source files are H264(AVC) then you can transcode the video files to H265(HEVC) and reduce the file size quite a bit with very little quality loss(unnoticeable to most people). Besides that, most of the source files have a bitrate that is higher than it needs to be, you'd be surprised how low you can go with bitrate before most people even notice it.

There are a lot of people that think transcoding with a lower bitrate will look terrible, but they'll also probably recommend using Plex media server, which does exactly that(and is piss poor at doing it to boot) and they probably don't even notice the quality loss.

I personally transcode videos using MeGUI or Xmedia Recode. MeGUI uses just the CPU, which takes a long time, especially with H265. However, the two pass encode from MeGUI give the best looking result, IMO. Xmedia Recode can use the CPU or your GPU. Using an nVidia GPU with Xmedia Recode to do two pass encoding is much faster(twice as fast or more), but the result isn't as good of looking, IMO. The slightly lower video quality of Xmedia Recode can be overcome by bumping the bitrate up slight(which results in a slightly larger file).

Don't bother with compression or encoding utilities. A waste of time and inefficient.

The prices of Blu-ray drives and media went down in the past couple of years.

That should solve your problem. Another cheap option is a portable HDD.

If you can live with AAC codec audio at 96/128kbps with stereo/5.1 channel you can use the CLI version of Handbrake to make something decent that the gui version really ain't good for.

I used it for smaller 20mins video and the quality is okish compared to the video size.

I used uncompressed recordings of games that are anywhere fra 2-4GB and I cut it down to max. 300mb at most and the quality looked fine.

I dont bother with optical drives and/or optical media. I store all movies/shows on a 10TB external HD. My life is low on space, I am downsizing my life to fit everything on a 32-foot sailboat plus boat spare parts.

Re-encoding will take ages, drastically reduce quality, and may cause sync issues between audio and video.

It's better to invest in more storage and be done with it.

I'm sure that they are already compressed, but you can compress further by using any video converter. But, I would not recommend doing so, just leave it or buy another storage.

Just download your stuff thats in x265 format which is about a 3rd smaller in file size.

As what have been mentioned, you can use freeware like Handbrake, VLC media player to shrink the size.
Select high compressed codec like H.264 for output.
