Strange GPU - Any ideas of it's history?

I recently bought a Sapphire RX480 Nitro 4GB. It is secondhand, refurbished by Sapphire and comes with a 12 month warranty.

When I installed it the AMD drivers identified it as an RX580. Everything else in Windows sees it as an RX580 and Linux also shows an RX580. The stickers on the card all read RX480 Nitro+. The part number is 299-ne347-100SA... the closest I find on DuckDuckGO is a TPU page for an RX470 and the SKU on the card is 11260-97. I can't find a reference to this SKU.

What's odd though is the BIOS is an RX480 BIOS. It runs at 1306mhz and 1750mhz RAM. I used the auto-overclock option in the drivers and it bumped it up to 1376mhz. It runs fine at that frequency and rarely goes over 70c.

So. I've got an RX480 Nitro+, identified as an RX580 with an RX480 BIOS, running at 1306/1750mhz and has an unknown SKU and P/N.

It runs a dream and I'm going to keep it but would love to know more!

Looks like it's just a 480 flashed to a 580

But if it's refurbished by Sapphire, would they of not changed it back to what it should be. Cannot see Saphire flashing 480's to 580's tbh and if they got it back and had been flashed should they not of changed it back as seen as it supposed to be refurbished.

I would check under the cooler and see what story that tells.

Based on the Device I.D. shown in GPU-z it is a RX480.
What I find interesting is the shown CCC Overdrive limits of 2000 and 2250 which are much higher than the settings from the factory and should make this a great card to overclock.

@W1zzard could this be a fault in GPU-z?

Sounds like a RMA'd mining card or similar, send back, Sapphire just tested to make sure it was working, and sold it

Why would they send it back? OP said the card is functional and they are happy with it. Absolutely no reason to throw away a good card.

Looks like Sapphire increased the Overdrive limits for all the Nitro cards, so it's not too special. I found a VBIOS that is nearly identical in the VGA BIOS database dating back to 2016
